re: Black musicians I listen to incorporating punck rock sounds into their music; Kelela said it herself when New Avatar released that non-black people regard her making rnb as something that comes "naturally" to her and so this makes others discount her music because of an idea that it takes minimal effort for her to tap into these sounds but when Black artists enter the sphere of what's regarded as white music, in this case punk rock, then their art is seen as more legitimate and themselves as artists suddenly considered more capable, reminds me of when Vince Staples said Blackberry Marmalade would be a punk song and he had to call out one of his fans for saying "this is the end of Vince Staples the rapper and the start of Vince Staples the artist". it's so crazy that Black musicians can't have a tonal shift in their music without having to point to their listeners that the only reason people can't fathom their affinity for these sounds is anti-blackness.
