It is said that the curse bearers unlock their powers by experiencing a traumatic event (well, with exceptions like William and Darius etc.).

Does that mean that there are curse bearers who just… never awaken their abilities and die not knowing they were ever curse bearers? And how traumatic is traumatic? How traumatic does the event have to be? Because (and I’m gonna spoil a bit)

There are four innate curse-bearers: William, Darius, Nica, and Ring.

Their curses were immediately present at birth, and the circumstances surrounding their births was no more (or less) traumatic than any other human baby (don’t tell Darius that he is, in fact, still human 👀).

It would appear that there’s only two paths leading to curse onset (innate unluckiness at birth or traumatic activation later on), but I feel like Roger would say the sample size is too small to draw a conclusion.

But let’s say that’s the case.

Leona's mother has maybe only ever been mentioned once in the entire game, in Book 7. Details here!

In summary:

There are theories that Leona's mother might be dead, and the one and only time she has been referenced was not enough to confirm or deny them.

Twst is generally very careful with its wording, being intentionally vague in ways that can be difficult for the English language to follow (ex: the VDC choreography), and in the scene where Leona refers to his mother he is quite possibly referencing something that she used to do in the past but does not longer (for an unspecified reason), or he might be talking about something she used to do before and still continues to do to this day :>

Is Leona's mother a mage? Was she a commoner before becoming queen, or was she already royalty? Are there political reasons why she cannot rule the country while her husband is bedridden, or is Falena doing so because she is dead?

There are even theories that she is/was partially or entirely fae to explain why Leona has slit pupils (like Malleus and Lilia) while Cheka's are round, is/was the king's second wife or mistress, Leona and Falena are half siblings, that is why they are so far apart in age and part of why Leona has been looked upon with such disdain by his own kingdom since he was a child, etc.!

(Note: Yana has confirmed that Leona's eyes become round, too, when he is in dark places.)
