Hey there hon, how's your day going? I'm in dire need of some advice, and you were the only person I could think of. š„ŗ
At the moment I only play Ikesen and Ikepri. Now please don't hate me for this, but there's one character from each game whose route I've avoided because I'm not sure I can handle the themes involved.
The first is Nobunaga's route. I know he's loved by almost everyone, but I've never really shared those feelings. Years ago I read the first one or two chapters and stopped at the scene where he blackmails Mai into playing Go with him, with the condition that if he wins he gets to "claim" a part of her. Something about that really bothered me. I couldn't stop thinking about how he was essentially getting his way through pressure and that Mai was being forced into doing what he wanted.
Later I read the manga version, and I think my dislike for him only grew stronger. I also felt that Mai was especially naive in his route and didn't put up much of a fight. Even when she protests or refuses, she often ends up doing what Nobunaga wanted in the first place.
A few weeks ago, though, I came across one of your posts about why Nobunaga's route is a must-read. I only glanced through it quickly, but it did make me consider giving him another chance. I've read most of the other routes, some of them multiple times (Mitsuhide's especially š ), while others I picked up out of curiosity or because I liked the character in another route and became interested. Nobunaga, however, is someone I've very deliberately been avoiding. š„²
The second character is Gilbert. Honestly, I just can't bring myself to read his route because he comes across as such a walking red flag. I've seen plenty of screenshots from his route from other accounts and yours as well, but I never understood why he seemed to bully Emma so much. Because of him, she ends up being treated harshly by the maids and nobles too.
What confuses me even more is that in other routesāespecially the Rhodolite princes' routesāEmma goes out of her way to get to know him, whether because she's Belle and feels she can't be partial, because it's her job, or simply because she gets roped into it somehow. But with Gilbert himself, I struggle to understand the appeal.
I also got irrationally angry when he bit Emma in Chapter 1. I remember thinking, "What the hell?" š
I've read a few of his event stories and collection stories as well, and I still didn't enjoy how possessive he seemed. My impression was that being with him meant Emma lost a lot of her freedomāthat she was almost caged, and that interacting too closely with anyone else felt like a death sentence.
So I need your help. I think I might be judging both of them too quickly, and I could very well be misunderstanding or missing important context. Could you tell me what I can tell from these two, I don't mind spoilers. Are my impressions off-base, or are these themes genuinely central to their stories?
Sorry for all the rambling š I think I might just be letting my dislike get the better of me and turning this into a bit of a rant. Please don't take offense to anything I've said, and I hope I haven't hurt anyone's feelings.
Hello, friend! Good on you for respecting your personal boundaries, and knowing when and how to test them for growth!
One thing I feel just isnāt talked about enough in Cybirdās games is the world building. Whether self-inserting or otherwise, players are meant to be immersed in the gameās setting, which provides the framework for all sorts of parameters.
Starting with IkeSen, whether she has a modern mindset and values or not, Mai cannot simply say and do whatever she wants without consequences.Ā
In feudal Japan, during this time period, Nobunaga would still get his way no matter what Mai says or does, because heās the one with the power. If you want your thoughts and opinions acknowledged and validated, youād better know somebody and own some assets.
Maiās a homeless, penniless, stranger, every last thing about her weird and foreign even though sheās in her home country.
She canāt push too much or go to far without personal risk, and the game operates under the premise that weāre trying our best to assimilate just long enough for the wormhole to whisk us back home.
Ā One of the themes in Nobunagaās route is watching this man, who has been used to getting his way for a long time, adapt to someone finally putting their foot down and resisting.
In order to achieve this, Nobu has to be as arrogant as possible to make the change noticeable and long-lasting. There needs to be a clear line of distinction for his transformative before and after.Ā
Once he falls, he renounces the way he formerly behaved, and itās never seen again, but to get there, there has to be something they bump heads over, as a story device.
The overly flirtatious and sexual supposition that the thing Nobu wants to āclaimā is Maiās body, is dramatically turned on its head when he reveals that heās after something completely non-sexual, her heart.
In a world where Nobunaga more often than not gets what he wants without having to put up much effort or think too hard, we learn that even he has room for growth.
Over in IkePri, weāre introduced to a world where connections are everything, and gossip will make or break you.
In this world, these attitudes would never dare be turned on the Rhodolitian princes, who are hosting Gilbert. Instead, theyāre placed upon the shoulders of an unknown and mysterious woman with no political power, an easy target.
Obsidian is the enemy, and thatās that. No one is trying to hear the ājust give them a chanceā pitch. Theyāre bad, and everyone associated with them for any reason is also bad.Ā The end.
Even if all Gilbert did was just stand there quietly, Belle would be an outcast for showing him kindness. Gilbert knew this would happen, and still chooses to visit Belle before he dies.
Because he just canāt move on without seeing her, he goes into protective mode, framing it as if heās isolating her, as he maneuvers her to safety.
His crazy behindĀ doesĀ like isolating her (yanderes gonna yandere) but Gilbert instantly clocks that her proximity to him is whatās got everyoneās 5/$25 panties in all kinds of knots.
Unfortunately in this world, the only safe place for her now that heās allowed himself this last bit of selfishness is in Obsidian.
He plays up the villain shtick because her reputation is already āruined,ā since Belle didnāt shun him immediately.Ā
In the world of IkePri, the second she was nice to him, Belle could never go back from it. If Gilbert left her side, who knows what could have happened in a palace full of vindictive ministers.Ā
This is why he keeps sticking to her. She canāt even trust her maids to not be whispering who knows what behind her back.
She has Rio, sure, but Sariel has him running to and fro, so heās not always there, and the princes are but friendly (I can feel Chev side-eyeing me) strangers to her. Just ask Yves how well it goes being a Rhodolitian royal with connections to Obsidian. They canāt even keep their own ministers from being a pack of jerks.
To protect Belle, Gilbert goes out of his way to make sure everyone sees them together in a āas long as Iām here, youāre not gonna mess with herā way, using his mere presence. Without his surgery, he wonāt last long, though, so he has to act quickly.
By playing the villain role, Gilbert absolves Belle from all responsibility. She didnātĀ chooseĀ to go to Obsidianā¦why, we all saw her being made a āhostageā on stage in front of a large crowd!Ā
Gilbert makes the choice to bring her to Obsidian because thereās nothing she can return to without retaliation.Ā
By making Belle the empress, he gives her the power to protect herself regardless of which country sheās in, and regardless of why heās there or not.
One key theme in Gilbertās route is that of the heart-of-gold antihero, with a twist.
Depending on whose viewpoint youāre looking at it from, Gilbert is both a villain and a hero, and often both at once.
Even if all of Rhodolite knew the truth about how Gilbert has saved them, they still wouldnāt believe it. He leans into his reputation because, unlike Belle, he can get himself out of any jam with his money, power, and army.
Belle does lose certain freedoms, but that is largely because of how Rhodolite operates. Her own country made her a pariah who would have to watch her back, so one of the other big themes of Gilbertās route is trust.
Trust that sheās not walking into some kind of death trap in a foreign land, trust in herself to handle everything coming at her nonstop without breaking down. Gilbert trusting that he wonāt up and die before he can get his beloved bunny to safety, he trusts her not to easily murder him when heās sick and frail.
EvenĀ ChevĀ trusts this woman he just met to do spy work for him with no experience whatsoever and not die, herself, in the process.
Just because sheās now in Obsidian doesnāt mean sheās 100% safe, but itās a far better option than leaving others to fend off assassination attempts for her, when she doesnāt even know theyāre happening in the first place.Ā
To keep her from running back to Rhodolite and becoming a target again, Gilbert does trap her with vital secret information that will be her killed if she leaks it, but again this, too, is where the theme of trust comes in.
Overall, I believe the inner workings of the game world are critical in understanding how and why characters are the way they are.Ā
Without this important context, itās easy to just write some characters off as jerks. Certainly some of them are jerks (and need to be, because the whole purpose of their route is to make a sharp change) but the world-building fills in the explanation for why that is:
Ā Nobunaga really can have you executed for popping off at the mouth and non-compliance. Gilbert could have left you to fend for yourself, having satisfied his selfish dying wish of seeing you just once.
You could have chosen death over playing strip Go with Nobu. You could have given Gilbert a cold reception and risked a political snafu with lasting consequences.
I like that the games allow us to pus these men who have never really been tested before, and see how much we can bend them to our will.
No matter how stubborn or arrogant they are in the beginning, and regardless of whatever crazy scheme they have going on, it is ultimately the player who gets their way.
This is how kasugayama feels like šššškenshin threatening to kill everyone, sasuke running away, yukimura and shingen bickering, yoshimoto getting yelled at, kanetsugu lowkey dont be doing anything though
