Fairy pigeons?
edit: for those concerned about the colorful birds, I was able to find this:
They are dyed and fed a special diet. These are pigeons located in Pearl City Hawaii and the Humane society has certified that they are treated humanely and are not in any danger from the process that changes their coloring. Their keeper (Doug Beter) has been recognized by the humane society for his best practices and his care for the birds.
2 Years of Tears - A Personal Look at Depression
Hi friends,
As I am writing this, I am nervous. Being vulnerable is hard, and this post is going to be a bit long but please bear with me because I donât think Iâve ever made a post thatâs as important.
Knowing that I cry often and thinking that it seemed a bit odd, two years ago, I decided to keep track of how many times I cried for the year. Starting on January 1st, 2017, I updated the count that I had going, and ended it on New Years. For 2017 is was 294 times. Thatâs a lot. In fact, if you were to average it out, thatâs more than once every other day. Now, thatâs not how it worked out. There were weeks, months even, that I wouldnât cry at all. There were also days where I cried so much that I became extremely dehydrated. And not every time I cried was I sad. Sometimes there were tears of joy, and sometimes I saw a cute dog, or a sad movie. But those times do not account for much of the times.
Itâs important to note, that the average woman cries 64 times a year. Crying 294 times is nearly 4.6 times more than that. Thatâs not good. Thatâs not healthy. And before anyone can say that this is for attention or that I wanted to cry as much as possible, no. Just no. I donât think anyone would want to be so overwhelmed by emotions that they cry. I donât think that anyone wants to feel their throat tightening, knowing that theyâre losing control of their ability to speak properly. I donât think anyone wants to be in that kind of pain. I donât want to be like this.
By August in 2017, I was well past 100 times crying for the year and decided that I had something wrong with me. I went to see a therapist. She told me that I have Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Thatâs been a hard pill to swallow. Itâs one thing to feel sad a lot, but without a diagnosis it could always just be because it was a âbad dayâ and there was always the hope that tomorrow everything would be fine and I wouldnât feel like that again. But knowing that there is something wrong with me, something that I cannot fix, causing me to feel this way, itâs terrifying. It scares me, and makes me feel alone. I donât want there to be something wrong with me. Yet at the same time, I feel like Iâve known this was a part of me for a long time but I did not want to admit it to myself. I didnât want there to be something wrong with me, and I thought that if I ignored it, it would go away. But it didnât.
So, I kept going to therapy. In December of 2017, I decided that it was right for me to try taking medications to help treat my depression. I was so afraid to make that decision, because medications and mental illness have been so overwhelmingly stigmatized and demonized. But nevertheless, I went to a psychiatrist. Luckily, she was great and we got me on a medication that has worked super well for treating my specific symptoms of my MDD, the major symptom being an extreme lack of energy. That does not equate to laziness. Laziness is not wanting to do something, depression is wanting to do something, but having your body feel so heavy that the thought of even getting out of bed to brush your hair seems like an impossible task, let alone writing a 10 page paper analysis or reading a book for class the next day.
SO, for this past year I have been on the lowest dose possible of my medication for my mental illness. And I continued to count the number of times that I cried. Besides just feeling better this past year, I have actual numbers to prove that my medications have helped me. Instead of crying 294 times like in 2017, in 2018 I cried only 76 times. Keeping in mind that a study done showed that on average woman cried 64 times a year, 2018 was nearly âaverageâ for me. Me, a person with MDD, cried only 1.2 times more than a ânormalâ person. I could not be happier to see this. I know that I felt ânormalâ this past year on medications, but having numbers back that up makes me feel so much better about everything. The stigma behind mental illness and medications is terrifying, but for me, these past two years have shown that I am doing what is best for me. My treatment is working and I couldnât be happier.
I have now stopped counting how many times I cry. I have accepted it as a regular way to show emotions, and I feel like I am in a healthy place emotionally. It is important to know that Major Depressive Disorder and other mental illnesses are based on chemical imbalances in the brain. My brain decided that it was not going to make enough Serotonin and Norepinephrine for me to function properly. My medication makes up for that.
Before anyone says that depression and mental illnesses are not real, and that I just need more love in my life, or need to workout, or need to do things I love, you are wrong. I go to the gym four times a week, I am in the most incredible relationship with one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, and this past semester I have ever had academically (I made Deanâs List, even). But there are still days when my depression gets the better of me. And thatâs okay.
Basically, the point of this gigantic post is to share my story of how I have struggled to deal with my mental health these last few years and hopefully to destigmatize these issues to some degree. Numbers are nice to see and they have been eye-opening for me, and I hope that they can help you as well.
So basically, Iâm still me. Iâm more me than ever because I finally have the energy to be myself again. Medications arenât the problem, not treating mental illness is. Take care of yourselves.
âYouâll always be sad about this ⌠but it doesnât mean you made the wrong choice. Itâs just something that you have to carry.â

Friendly reminder that Vincent van Gogh willingly checked himself into an asylum so that he could get better, resulting in him creating some of the most iconic paintings of his entire career, done in the asylum, when he was being treated 24/7, because he finally didnât have to struggle with his demons and could instead focus on his muse, WHICH WERE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS!
Remember this little insignificant painting?
How about this one?
Check this one out:
All of these and more were painted in the asylum when he was receiving treatment for his mental illnesses and I know I just said that but I said it again and Iâm saying it a third time until you dramatic abled assholes understand!
VINCENT VAN GOGH
- KNEW THAT HE WAS MENTALLY ILL
- WANTED TO CHANGE THAT
- WENT TO AN ASYLUM
- GOT THE HELP HE NEEDED
- PAINTED SOME ICONIC MASTERPIECES AS A RESULT!
SO DONâT YOU DARE COME OUT HERE WITH THIS, âI WISH I WAS DEPRESSED SO I COULD BE AS CREATIVE AS VAN GOGHâ BULLSHIT BECAUSE EVEN HE KNEW THAT HIS DEMONS WERE HARMING HIS WORK, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HIS HEALTH, AND HE DID EVERYTHING WITHIN HIS POWER TO FIGHT THEM EVERY SINGLE DAY OF HIS LIFE, UNTIL THEY ENDED UP WINNING!Â
This is also incredibly important for any creative persons dealing with mental illness, and their parents.
Receiving mental help improves your craft, not hurt it. Before getting put on medication for the first time to treat my mental illnesses, my mom expressed to me how sheâs worried about my getting treatment because of my art. Regardless, your mental health should be more important anyway, but, honestly, itâs a lot harder to produce good art when you struggle getting out of bed, let alone creating masterpieces. When youâre in more health, improving your craft comes much easier!
Personally I think the most beautifull painting of him was this one:
He made it when he heard about the birth of his nephew who was named after him. Still in the asylum but really happy for his brother! âHow glad I was when the news came⌠I should have greatly preferred him to call the boy after Father, of whom I have been thinking so much these days, instead of after me; but seeing it has now been done, I started right away to make a picture for him, to hang in their bedroom, big branches of white almond blossom against a blue sky.â
Oh I have sucb rants about how âgoodâ art comes while suffering.
No.
look at me.
The idea of the âsuffering artistâ comes from bunch of alcholic, drug abusing, womanizers trying to justify their bad life choices as some sort of artistic angst.
IT IS 100% BULLSHIT
Take your meds, get your therapy, be happy, and live life
The art will be there.
I don't look like a victim
I don't look like a victim of sexual assault. I don't cringe when guys walk past me on the street (anymore). I don't have red eyes from constantly crying over the trauma I went through. I don't look defeated, my shoulders don't hunch over wherever I go, I hold my head high, I have confidence. I act like I have my life together, and the outside world believes it. Why? Because I don't look like a victim.
You see, you can't choose your family. When I was about 12, my aunt got married to a guy who had previously been convicted of sexually assaulting young, teenage girls. Everyone in the family knew about it, and no one in the family would let me be near him at family gatherings, to protect me. Now my aunt took offence to this and actually disowned US for it. I love my family, and I'm grateful that they tried to protect me. But they protected me from the wrong person.
But I don't look like a victim. You can't look at me and tell that my brother tried to rape me when I was 13. You can't tell that I cried myself to sleep over it for years. You can't tell that I still have nightmares from it to this day, nearly 6 years later. You can't tell that when I finally got the courage to tell my parents a year after it happened that it only took 2 weeks for my mother to stop believing me and for my father to stop caring, because they "wanted their family to be normal again". Looking at me, you can't tell that I spent nearly 6 years being terrified of guys and refusing to associate with any of them, thinking they were all like him. That when I got my first boyfriend, I would cry from fear when he touched me sometimes. That I thought it was normal to be in an abusive relationship, because I thought it was normal to be afraid of guys.
You don't see how I had to live with my attacker for over four years after it happened. You can't hear the way that he joked about it like it was nothing, and you can't feel the constant fear that he would try again. The constant fear that lasted for over FOUR years, that I would be raped in my own home, by my own brother. It's no wonder that I've had so many nightmares that I'm so desensitized to them that I can't even wake myself up from them anymore.
You also can't see how it tore my family apart. My parents act like nothing happened, like everything is fine now. But I know better. My brother is dead to me, and has been ever since it happened. A part of me is very sad over that, family should stick together. But some things are just unforgivable, so as far as anyone asks, I'm an only child.
It took nearly six entire years to trust guys again. That's over 2,000 days to feel okay in the presence of males. I had male teachers during that time, male bosses, male classmates, and I never fully trusted any of them. Why? Because assault is traumatizing. Anyone who tries to undermine that can go straight to hell.
Looking at me, I'm a pretty college student with bright eyes who laughs with her friends and gets decent grades. A girl who tends to have paint on her arms and a book in her hand. A girl who looks happy by every definition.
I don't look like a victim but that doesn't mean that I'm not one, and that I don't struggle with what happened to me everyday. And I know I'm not the only one like this.

READ ME
Hey everyone! As you may have noticed, Iâve been incredibly inactive lately. This is due, in part, to a very exciting/sad announcement that I havenât been sure how to say...
Iâve decided to write a novel! Iâm incredibly excited for this experience and Iâm thrilled with how itâs shaping up. That being said, it may signify the end of this tumblr blog.
HOWEVER, once I get my book published I would love to start writing for you guys again. Currently all of my inspiration is going into my book though. You all will be the first to know when itâs published if youâre interested in reading it. Encouragement/suggestions are ALWAYS welcome and I hope life is treating you all like the magnificent people that you are!
Iâll still be on here, just not posting to this account. If you need me for any reason/you would like to talk, you can reach me at my personal blog @sassy-sayra
You're awesome seriously đđ˝đ
Thank you! You are too! :)
I really really really love your work. It's honestly so beautiful.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me :) Itâs people like you who inspire me to keep writing!
ok I'm the one who asked if I could actually write based off of a few of the excerpts. the main one that inspired me was #18 because I'm currently in the same situation and a lot of the other ones (#21, #27) are just really good writing prompts and i actually do want to know how to come up with these...
Hi there, Iâm SO sorry for the delayed response! Yes you certainly can but if you quote or paraphrase my work I would appreciate it if you could source me :) I just pull from life experience in order to create these, whatever Iâm feeling at the situation Iâm in. I donât have a rhyme or reason, sorry I canât be more help :c
Active ways to cultivate positive body image:
(Because oh my god, itâs so hard, and everyoneâs all like stop feeling so bad about yourself and itâs like how???)Â
Be naked. A lot. Sleep naked. Have sex naked. Eat cereal naked. (Or naked and wrapped in a sheet. Favorite thing.)Â
Follow beautiful, confident, (un-photoshopped) body-positive babes on the Internet. Unfollow anything that makes you feel insecure. Exposure is key. Youâre not going to get it if you donât seek it out, because the media sucks and wants us to feel like shit about ourselves so they can take our money. (Some hashtags to follow: #effyourbeautystandards #bootyrevolution #blackisbeautiful #transisbeautiful #wheelchairlife #fatkini #fatshion)
Lingerie. Next best thing to being naked.Â
Self care, babe. Different for everyone. (Me? Showers, books, shaving my legs, nature walks, dark lipstick, good playlists, clean rooms, candles, sexy time.)Â
Get ready in your underwear. Boobs = happiness.Â
Self portraits. Be pro-selfie. Take a million selfies. Take sexy selfies. Take no makeup selfies. Take bad angle silly selfies. Take artsy tripod selfies. Take everything-is-on-point selfies. Youâre gorgeous; document your gorgeousness. You donât even need to post them.Â
Stop with the self deprecationnnnn. Pleeeeaseeee. Itâs hard to control your thoughts love, I know, but you can control what you say. NEVER insult yourself out loud. Dare I say compliment yourself out loud? (And if you can, do your best to try to body-positive-ify your thoughts too.)Â
Sex (including solo sexy time), wine, and chocolate. In that order.Â
Share the body love. Compliment your girlfriends. Cultivate a nonjudgemental, supportive, lift-each-other-up âweâre so cuteâ friend group. Everyoneâs insecure. Compliment your besties. And strangers, too. Be that person that makes everyone feel good about themselves when theyâre around.Â
Good luck gorgeous. Itâs a battle. We gotta unlearn all this societal bullshit.
