I googled it once and the only reason why the Great Lakes aren’t called inland seas is because they are entirely freshwater, not salt.
By any other metric they’d be seas. Superior especially (the big one in the upper left) behaves like a small ocean, and has claimed at least 250 ships and over 1000 people. Gordon Lightfoot wrote a frankly chilling song about her that I’ll include here:
I love the Great Lakes, you know how all boats look like shit, like just rusty hulks, you don’t get that on the Great Lakes because it’s fresh water, like the shipwrecks are incredibly well preserved
Cornelia: I really need to know how you didn’t realize she saw the both of you.
Vivienne: I just wasn’t thinking! It’s so normal for everyone around me to see yokai, I forgot that not everyone can! I won’t make this mistake again.
Cornelia: (Sigh.) I’m sure you won’t. anyways, the case we handled today was that of a kappa, one of the most well known yokai around.
Vivienne: And it’s on our side now!
Cornelia: Kappa can be very loyal creatures, or at the very least honorable ones. Despite their mischievous nature, they prefer to keep their promises.
Vivienne: They’ve got a lot of interesting preferences, don’t they?
Cornelia: In any case, the most prominent feature of a kappa, other than its webbed hands and feet, reptilian appearance, is the water basin on top of their heads that needs to be filled with water at all times.
Vivienne: Otherwise, they’ll die pretty quick! It was such a shock when the bone cement actually worked!
Cornelia: …what do you mean, it was a shock?
Vivienne: Um, that’s all the time we have for today! We’ll see you next week. Until then, make sure to stay ahead of things, if you can!

A young girl carefully tiptoes through the boundless cluster of corpses as one would avoid stepping on a blooming flower. It smells foul; overripe fruit and threatening, metallic maroon. She stops at the existence in the center of it, gazing up at it as it devours all around it, grasping tightly onto the deceased with eight limbs, pulling them into pieces for good measure before closing its mouth around their rotting flesh. The holy insect looks down, blood dripping like rainfall from its open maw; teeth a row of daggers as it says her name, garbled through blood. “██████… I protected you."
“I know,” she says, and reaches up to take the god’s hand. “I know.”

A woman walks through Crepuscule’s cemetery, a sealed, full body bag slung over her shoulder as she drags a shovel behind her. She looks left and looks right as she walks, scanning each grave for the names she seems to be looking for; eventually, she stops, and drops the body bag unceremoniously on the ground with a sigh. In front of her were a family’s graves, two of which still glistened with disturbed soil; recently buried, recently deceased.
The woman props the shovel up on one of the graves as she kneels, unzipping the body bag and pulling out several cans of coffee, all the same variety save one, which advertised vanilla oat milk and a splash of syrup on the label. She eyes the pastries, back at the grave and the dirt and all that crawled underneath the ground, and shakes her head, leaving them in the bag. She cracks open a can of coffee and takes several swigs before setting it down on the grave in front of her, the name on the grave far more muddled than the two beside it.
She sighs, slams the shovel into the ground, and begins to dig up the grave beneath it.
It’s hard, tiresome work, and after a while it begins to rain. In the far, far distance, she can see the Undertaker in its office, not unaware of what was occurring underneath its watch. The woman wipes sweat from her forehead, and finds herself speaking aloud as the square-nosed shovel begins to sink further and further into the dirt, scraping layers of grass and dirt away like leftover candle wax, “I really should’ve sharpened the shovel more. Maybe that’s why.”
She knows the casket’s height, and carves out the proper shape, although she can’t recall its corners nor color past the fog of memory and absent time. She breathes out, setting the shovel down to polish off one of the cans. When she finishes it, she opens another.
“They could’ve at least done some of the hard work for me,” She mutters, bitter like the coffee finally rushing through her veins. Now caffeinated, she continues to dig, further and further down, setting aside roots and insects as she scrapes the dirt away into an ever growing pile. “You know, now I’m suddenly worried I left the kettle on, or something.”
She shakes her head, glancing back at the body bag. “I guess we’ll handle it when we get back.” Slowly but surely, she begins to stand deeper and deeper into the dirt, glancing upwards as the pile of dirt greets her. She raises her shovel and lowers it into the ground, a metallic clang sending her ears ringing. “Finally,” she says, sweeping the dirt away to reveal the casket she couldn’t recall. She mumbles something to herself and climbs out, wiping the dirt off her vest as she ponders aloud, “Should I use a pulley? No, if they…” She turns her head to the other two graves, and feels her heart do something odd in her chest.
“I hope I’m wrong.”
She steps onto the casket, clearing enough dirt beside it for her to stand next to it, and forces the end of her shovel underneath the gap, and slowly forces it open, pressing her tongue up to the roof of her mouth to dull her senses even by a small fraction as the reality of what must have been done oppresses her.
The body inside the casket had been dismembered, each piece shoved unceremoniously into dirty plastic bags and tied with frayed rope, scribbled wards written in crimson on the side of it. The cruelty of an afterthought makes her chest burn as she stares down at the pieces, voice a harrowed whisper, “God, Vivienne. What’d they do to you? I knew it wouldn’t be pretty, but this… is inhumane.”
She shakes her head as she begins to collect the scattered pieces. She finds a leg, a part of fractured bone sticking out of it. She picks up an arm, lopped violently off. By how jagged the wounds are, it must have been erratic, harried; so violent it made her stomach churn. She finds a shoulder, and thinks of how they must have held it while chopping her arms off. Each hand is in a separate bag, and the left seemed particularly violent, the cut lines jagged across each tendon; the bare ring finger a reflection of their impossible expectations.
Although the corpse had been utterly brutalized, it shows no signs of decay. She sets the pieces onto the ground above as she herself climbs out of the grave, leaving the empty casket behind. She sets down the plastic bag containing the head as she turns her back, pulling out one of the two pastries and taking a bite, the crinkling conveniently concealing how the head’s plastic bag began to rustle; easily passed off as the wind, had the head’s eyes not just opened.
The silence of the cemetery begins to sink in, and in the distance, the Undertaker flicks the light off, no longer an observer. The woman, with her back turned, doesn’t hear the rustling of the leaves, the hushed whispers of the night, nor the newly revived flesh bearing weight, sinking the dirt down behind her.
She stretches, and turns back to see a disembodied hand crawling towards the open body bag, disappearing inside of it before reappearing, triumphantly holding the second pastry. The woman stares down at the hand that’s appeared before her.
Her expression doesn’t change as she flits her gaze to the head, black eyes open wide; the decapitated head floating in the air, smoke-like ectoplasm a shadow behind her. The floating head offers her a wide smile, and says, “Good morning! Thanks for the pastry. That was for me, wasn’t it?”
The woman sighs, and beckons the body parts closer as she releases them from their plastic confines. They scatter towards each other like long lost lovers, the pieces clicking into place like a puzzle, or perhaps a shattered porcelain doll collecting its own pieces. The brutalized limbs find their home in each other, upper leg connecting to lower leg connecting to the abdomen, her arms cracking back into place as she searches for her foot, and finally, her body walks over to the awaiting decapitated head.
Cornelia offers the sweetened coffee to her, and replies, “It was. Good morning, Vivienne.”
Vivienne carefully attaches her head to her neck, and happily takes a bite of the pastry held in her still-detached hand.

Chapter 11 - The Reception of Seven Association
The hydrangea icon for Bookshelf Interlude was Easter egging Gea's appearance and implying his death in the story.
We first heard of "S. Fujiwara" in Chapter 5.
Zinnia's introductory paragraph parallels Mari's original introduction in What Lies Beneath.
Mari and Zinnia's last name, Perrault, comes from Charles Perrault, the author of Little Red Riding Hood.
Gea's final line directly parallels Mari's statement in the penultimate chapter of the Kingdom Arc.
Chapter 13 - A Winter Chill
It isn't mentioned by name, but the flowers Drosera originally gifts Narcissus are gladiolus flowers, most specifically the chartreuse coloring. Gladiolus represents things like strength, endurance, pride, moral integrity...
The second and third flowers Drosera gifts are red roses and baby's breath. Red roses are passion and romance, whereas baby's breath represent sincerity, purity, and love again.
Drosera's mentioned to wear daffodil yellow overalls--Narcissus' flower. How romantic.
Drosera's cat's name is Nighthawk, a reference to the painting by Edward Hopper, which long-time readers will know is one of my favorites. It represents the need for togetherness, the mundane, in a closed off society.
Valerian and Ivy being mentioned at the tail end of Narcissus' dream sequence was to clue the reader into the fact it was a dream: timeline-wise, it doesn't add up.
The description of Drosera's rotting body is a reference to Valerian's talk with Ivy in the Kingdom Arc. (...although it's also just how a body decomposes... but who asked me?)
Chapter 14 - Scarlet Goodbye
The other red Color they're referring to is not the Red Gaze.
Leander is referencing his speech at Chrys' funeral in What Lies Beneath.
Chrys' last name, Faust, was foreshadowed with this line.
Ambrose quotes herself from the Darkest Twilight.
Leander's note was first revealed in the Kingdom Arc.
Chapter 15 - The Weight of Love
The drinks "the woman" orders for herself and Leander are Shark Attack, and Pop My Cherry.
Larkspur is a purple, incredibly toxic (when consumed) plant. Two milligrams is enough to kill an adult. Much less for a child.
Chapter 16 - King in Yellow
Anem mentions, and reveals that he has been on a WARP Train in Chapter 5.
Centra Fujiwara is officially introduced, and confirms that there are indeed four Fujiwara siblings.
We learn Anem's last name, Carpenter. As for why... Jesus was a Carpenter, wasn't he? (I think I'm funny.)
The snack Hastur has at the end of the chapter is Centra's, although the three of them forgot to close it. (I assumed W Corp couldn't reverse what happens to the snacks. There's no bio data for that, and in universe it could be easily written off. It was to reflect that, even when your memories are erased, there would still be a small fragment of them in your heart.
Chapter 17 - Unconditional
"Adele Bloch-Bauer" is a reference to the painting Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I by Gustav Klimt. It's also referred to as "The Woman in Gold". King of Greed's design seems to be taken from it.
Every author has their own language, and the readers learn it overtime. In Chapter 15, we built the association that larkspur is a "negative affection", hence why it's reused in Chapter 17.
Viscaria and Forge's reaction to Press' recollection of her injury is because ruptured globe is a very severe eye injury. If you don't seek emergency treatment, there's a very high chance you will lose vision in your eye. For reference, 30-40% of monocular blindness is caused by ocular trauma. There are some cases where this injury might heal on it's own, but I promise that it's few and far between.
The Book of Press was Easter egging TDY. It was actually written during the developmental stages.
Viscaria and Forge's reaction was to discovering the Book of a Lover was empty. (Press scribbling in the margins was a red herring.)
It was implied from the beginning of the chapter that the Book of a Lover would end up on the Floor of Religion. Don't ever, ever trust my throwaway jokes. I'm planning something evil with them.
Chapter 18 - Evergreen
Valerian's dream references the Darkest Twilight.
Narcissus and Valerian's conversation references Chapter 13.
"The Undertaker" is a reference to Technology, a poem written by Ambrose Bierce, mentioned in Chapter 13 by Mari and later discussed between Ambrose and Valerian. It's a satirical poem about the almost theatrical response to death in the Victorian era. In Chapter 18, Valerian takes the role of "the Undertaker".
The Undertaker references Valerian's Tales of Pruned Flowers.
The poem that the Undertaker quotes is Hermann Hesse's All Deaths. However, the poem goes unfinished.
Valerian, died anew as the Undertaker, parallels Rose's actions towards Mari's corpse in the Darkest Twilight.
Alstroemeria flowers represent strength, love, friendship and devotion. Also, go Google the meaning of "resupinate", if you don't already know it.
Chapter 19 - Devotion's Reward
Lonicera, Valerian's sister is officially introduced. Oh yeah, if you're curious, here's what she looks like! Reading this post means you get to see.
We finally see Forge and Valerian's first meeting, referenced in Chapter 1, Chapter 3, Chapter 12, as well as in this art.
Valerian's sacrifice parallels Forge's first time taking someone else's life.
Hastur's right. Valerian, what are you talking about? That's not light reading by stretch of the imagination.
Multi-chapter
We see Viscaria warn the others about Valerian three times, in Chapter 12, Chapter 17, and Chapter 19. Changing the wording from "Sailor take warning" to "Shepherd take warning" was foreshadowing that Anem would agree with Viscaria. (Sorry for the shitty editing. Tumblr only allows thirty images per post.)

She doesn’t bother to wipe the tears away, kissing Drosera again and again as she laughs, the whole world safely in her home, in her arms, “I love you too, you idiot.”
Narcissus scrutinizes it under her harsh gaze, and then shrugs. “Well, whatever. It’s good you don’t have a hangover. I’m not helping you if it lasts all day. Ivy might, the doormat that she is.”
Chapter 18, "Evergreen"
“You’re such a nerd.” She says, rolling her eyes.
“Dramatic ass,” Narcissus mumbles.
Narcissus laughs. “You’re such a freak, captain.”
Chapter 19, "Devotion's Reward"
“You motherfucker!” Narcissus shouts, grabbing a nearby pillow and throwing it at Valerian’s face. “Yes, we fucking were! Where in the fresh fuck were you, you twat!?”

Ambrose finds Valerian in the hallways past the Floor of Philosophy, with three books under its arm. Before she even announces her presence, Valerian begins to speak, its voice low, “I knew that this would be worth it.”
“Valerian,” Ambrose says, as she scans the titles. “Put those books back on the shelf. You know what’ll happen if you open them.”
Outside, beyond the infinite walls of the Library, night has fallen, and twilight has arrived at their doorstep. Valerian says nothing, and Rose continues.
The difficult thing about family is that no matter how far you run, and no matter who you try to become, you’ll always look in the mirror and see someone else. In the glint of an eye, or the crook of a smile, I see my sister. When I laugh, I hear her, and what follows is a loneliness so hungry I feel as if I've been thrown right back in the Backstreets.

“I know,” Mari says, “I know.” She laughs, “You’ve got better advice—better reassurance than me. You’ve gotta stop that, you know? I’ve… only got a few minutes to make up for lost time, right?”

What she can see outside the window is even less; flowers and greenery outside her window, outside of her reach.
