Hi! Could you describe the symbolic differences between the Crown’s affinities? I always get Death of the Sun and I’m curious about the other one! Thank you 🤗
Sure thing!! For clarity, if you want to try to get the other affinity, see this post for pointers on which choices are relevant. Also, spoilers for those who aren't caught up yet, obviously!
In terms of symbolism, I stuck to the themes of the expected, and the subverted. The Crown's other possible affinity, which is Sun's Blessing, is the more straightforward and thematically in-line with what the player may expect from the story.
The sun is a very important symbol for Kurdish culture since ancient times: it's the source of life, and is connected with fire as another cultural and religious aspect. Even if the player doesn't have this context, though, the story still highlights the Crown's connection to the sun from an early point, so you could say Sun's Blessing falls in line with what you might expect to get as the Crown's affinity.
I like to leave most of these things up to the player's own interpretation, but you could say that a Crown receiving the Sun's Blessing affinity is a Crown that is stepping into their role very naturally. They know and accept their duty, and embrace their destiny as Arsur's new ruler.
On the other had, Death of The Sun is a (slight) subversion of that. Eclipses in history were sometimes seen as omens or displays of a deity's power, but that isn't quite as applicable in the world of Arsur. Rather, I thought an eclipse would actually symbolize something of renewal.
The sun being shadowed only to emerge anew could symbolize a Crown struggling with their destiny, but overcoming that to be reborn through adversity. Either through the struggle of survival, or merely struggling to accept their duty, and rediscovering themselves through that process.
This is reflected somewhat in the choices. Each of the relevant choices you get relate to an element (air, water, earth or fire), and each element has a corresponding theme (light or shadow). This is something of my own invention, but I gave water and earth the association with shadow, and air and fire the association with light.
If you affirm or lean towards the elements of water (self-reflection/inner struggle) and earth (home/community) in your choices, you'll gain more points for shadow, which leads to Death of The Sun. Vice versa for air (greater wisdom/the weight of duty) and fire (truth/revelation), giving more points for light, and leading to Sun's Blessing.
Hope that answered everything you were wondering about!!
Look I love unconditional devotion love stories as much as the next person, but there's really something so deliciously raw about conditional devotion.
I have served you and I have loved you for decades, but I will not give up my principles for you. You cut out part of my heart and took it with you down that path that you insist on walking, but you walk it alone. Even when the bleeding, gaping hole you left in my chest kills me, I will not follow you.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or an expert, and I am merely re-sharing information that I have found so you can do your own research and make informed decisions.
Warning: some of the information below is pretty gross if you're sensitive to, let's say, topics concerning gastric distress. These details are below the cut.
If you have not been made aware yet, there is a rash of parasitic infections affecting several states in the US. I think the last tally was upwards of 30 states, with a concentration of cases in the Midwest.
The parasite is called Cyclospora. It's not a new thing, so don't freak out about that.
The eggs of this thing hold on to fresh produce - lettuce, tomatoes, onions, berries, etc...
Washing is NOT a guarantee that your produce safe.
Proper cooking is the only way to effectively kill this critter's eggs and prevent them from becoming infectious.
Foods with peels or skins that you remove are generally safer, but you must be careful about the risk of cross-contamination from your hands, knives, or other utensils you might use with these items.
WASH YOUR HANDS - you should be doing that anyway, especially after using the bathroom.
More specifics, including unpleasant things, below.
This parasite causes Cyclosporiasis which can take up to 2 weeks after you ingest infected foods to present.
Symptoms include: diarrhea (watery and apparently explosive), abdominal cramping, possible fevers, and vomiting.
The illness can take days to an entire month to resolve. It basically stops once the parasite's life cycle is complete (long enough for it to reproduce and make you miserable, spreading its hard work along). Once they are done, they are done, but re-infection is possible if you are not diligent with hygiene - WASH YOUR HANDS.
Most healthy people can recover from this illness on their own; however, there is a specific type of antibiotic that can help speed things along especially if you are at-risk or particularly ill.
You may have guessed - this is a poo-borne illness. So, when infected poo comes into contact with produce, that's where the problem for us begins. To my knowledge, the source of this outbreak has STILL not been found.
The biggest risk with this illness is dehydration. Dehydration can be DEADLY, especially for the young, elderly, or immunocompromised.
Don't play around with dehydration, don't assume you will be safe from it if you are sick. See a doctor for help!
So far, no deaths that I know of have been documented, but there are likely thousands of cases, as this hasn't been tracked or reported on very well that I can find.
I wasn't sure if I should share this, but on the chance it can help one of you stay well, I wanted to pass this along. I found out through social media and at least in my region, there has been too little official attention on it.
nice pair of characters who trust each other more than anyone else in the whole entire world it would sure be a shame if one of them betrayed that trust for the sake of trying to keep the other alive. it would sure be a shame to love someone so much you destroy them

New Mini-update: All versions of the game hosted on my site (so, not the Itch.io version) have been updated to include a modded version of the previous save system smPlugin that now allows exporting & importing of the save slots (including in bulk) as .json files.
I decided to go ahead and push this through ahead of the big upcoming Chapter2-6 update (right now on line 18504 out of 24215 in the revision process) for all those whose browsers have been going “That’s a nice save file you have there… it’d be a shame if something happened to it *purges all data*.”
If you don’t see the new save system at the top of the game, you’ll need to clear the cache for the OKS website. If you’re on desktop, you can also try a hard refresh (CTRL + F5 on Windows, CMD + SHIFT + R on Mac) first and see if that works.
Note: This won’t do anything about Choicescript saves corrupting after a big update, but at least it’s a nice backup for those whose saves kept mysteriously going missing.
It’s a bit tetchy. Sometimes you’ll need to reload the page to get the save slots to properly populate (particularly if you’re doing a large bulk import of saves). Sometimes the browser will hang a bit the first time you try to load a newly imported save (it seems to be as fast as ever after the first time though).
And then when I tried filling out all 100 slots to test the bulk storage, I ran face-first into the QuotaExceededError at slot 88, as it seems Supermium has the OKS localStorage capped at 5.7MB (gee, thanks, Supermium!)
I believe most people not on CogDemos have moved on to using the newer ChoiceScriptSavePlugin instead of smPlugin, but if there’s anyone out there still using smPlugin that would like the modded code for importing/exporting save files, just hit me up for it.
Not in dire straits or anything, but could use some help making some ends meet. Due to currency conversion for me 5 bucks is already pretty big.
Anyone that does, feel free to drop an ask or something. It's not like you need to pay for me to consider suggestions, but might as well, eh?
Also if we reach the goal I could drop an early version of a steamy scene with the detective I mentioned previously. Just for funsies, haha.
Maybe I should consider making a patreon? But if I did it would be only per update, I don't think I can work regularly enough on the game for me to feel good about taking money monthly.
Oh, what is that? They are selling my demo for 400 dollars :D That is rather expensive for a free demo, I think. Or is it just my logo they are selling? Interesting. I doubt it sells well, but if it has I would like my cut! But I do not at least know about selling my demo, so perhaps they missed a step somewhere.
But wait! As with these scam sites, there is more! I am naturally not the only one who they are trying to steal from. Probably very badly at these prices (like 400-600 dollars) but still.
At a quick glance this "brand" is also "selling" at least:
God Cursed by @wings-of-ink
Misplaced by @calliopefiction
Uroboros by @uroboros-if
The Gray Ascendancy by @thegrayascendancy-if
The Great Protector by @greatprotector-if
And probably a bunch of other ones I missed. And this was all from this one "brand".
Should we try to do something? This one is so ridiculous I really doubt people are falling for it with those ridiculous price tags.

Hello! I love the music in cantata so much, I was wondering if you could tell us a bit about it? Sorry if you already have and this is a repeat! Thank you!
Hello anon! I’ve talked a little about the music but I don’t think anyone’s asked directly. Or if they have, I couldn’t find the ask, lol.
The music is from various artists on Pixabay. You can find links to every track on the credits page within the game itself. I encourage you to check out the artists on Pixabay!
I wanted an emphasis on strings for this IF, both for the metaphor with the cordis and for the classical sound. Every track features stringed instruments, even the RO themes. The only exception is Bayram’s, which features a flute. The music was initially inspired by the baroque era but I basically just found tunes I liked. 😅
the final fit illo ft. tesias!!! im not getting super elaborate with all that embroidery and textile work so you will get blobs of color. soz. info under the cut
judgement masks are important cultural artifacts for the Mani people. before the Fall of Dumar, the judiciary caste of the Mani would wear them to obfuscate their appearance while handing down sentences in large, echoing chambers. the point was to minimize blood feuds between families in a largely insular ethnogroup, but nowadays they're more ceremonial
tesias' mask is kind of boring by comparison, but the fundamental idea of Unsettling Mask That Makes You Guilty is still there and very important to their character
shudnah are the lowest class of Mani people, in that they're no longer considered Mani at all. it's only used in two contexts: the most common is someone forcibly evicted from the Mani cultural sphere for some kind of crime. the second, less common case is orphans who through some unfortunate circumstance have been raised outside of Mani culture. ("less common" but this is more common than you think -- Alandrian clergy love to steal Mani children and forcibly assimilate them "for their own good")
shudnah are not allowed to wear jewelry as a consequence of exile, and all of their property is stripped from them and disseminated to the poor
this is also a Mani funeral rite, so it really hammers home the "you are dead to us" aspect of being shudnah
while the Mani aren't a monolith and practices change from region and clan to region and clan, some design staples remain indicative of the Mani -- namely triangles and X shapes
tesias is wearing a lovingly embroidered sash and shirt here as an example, but as alleged shudnah, they wouldn't be allowed to
speaking of sashes, Alandrian Mani clans have adopted the masculine sash in much of their clothing. you don't see it as frequently in Aymeri or Iskarian Mani groups
the Mani, for practicality, tend to wear their wealth, since it's easier to transport for a largely nomadic group. the Mani are also well-known metalsmiths (particularly copper and silver) and textile producers, so intricate metalwork, embroidery, and woven fabrics are some of the most popular ways to display the wealth of a particular family
this (and bells strategically sewn into the clothes) has the effect of making a very pleasant jingle-jangle sound when you move around
the more jewelry one wears and the more embroidery or weaving one has in their clothes, the richer they are
this extends to judgement masks, which clan mothers are ritually obligated to wear when interacting with outsiders
which makes Mani clothes a bitch to draw. sorry
tesias is wearing ritual clothes for clan mothers in the final outfit -- their daily clothes aren't usually that elaborate
