Your memories only go five years back, to when you woke up in a subterranean tunnel system with nothing but a name. Now you reside in the Holy City, capital of a post-apocalyptic world ruled by a faction called the Religious.
After a near-death experience at the hands of a crazed angel, you're suddenly thrust into a building conspiracy surrounding a corpse-worshiping cult, divinely mad saints, and something buried far, far beneath the earth.
To top it all off, you're being plagued by nightmares you can't explain, as well as your rapidly returning memories.
Or… someone's memories, anyway.

Characters (descriptions here)
The Mercenary: Val (nb/m/f)
A hired blade with a chaotic streak, as well as the closest thing you have to a friend. Easy-going and unpredictable, Val is usually the one to get you into trouble, but is always there to get you out of it.
The Handmaiden: Klaus Kirkhall (m)
A high-ranking member of the Religious. Klaus is pragmatic with a dry sense of humor, but takes his responsibilities deeply seriously. You get the intense feeling he know something - many things - that you don't.
The Priestess: Ira Auclair (nb)
A priestess working in the lower districts of the Holy City, extremely devout and deeply interested in the history and lore of the Religious. They spend their time searching archives to fuel their (slightly blasphemous) theories.
The Spy: Kat Saxon (f)
Claims to be a priestess, but is barely trying to hide the fact that she's clearly anything but. Her merciless stare and unshakeable confidence dare anyone to call out her suspect nature.
The Muscle: Dane/Dana Constantine (m/f)
An officer of the Blessed Guard, working directly under Klaus. Constantine is quick to anger, and is an absolute brick wall when challenged. While deeply loyal, Constantine isn't afraid to give their employer a piece of their mind.
The Saint: Guinefort (nb)
world's soggiest beyblade
Poly Options: Val/Klaus and Ira/Constantine
Content warnings: violence, blood, heavy religious themes

Do the RO number relate to branching ,overall quality of romance being impacted by number, just a personal preference? I'm curious to the line of thinking.
it's just a huge time commitment. In a story with a lot of ROs (and/or additional characters who aren't romanceable), you either have to be prepared to put in a lot of time writing branching and flavor text for those characters, or sacrifice depth and have said characters be basically interchangeable with no real impact
it's the same critique as, for example, a superhero IF that gives you a lot of options for your character's powers. except with the added danger of readers getting attached to an RO and being upset you couldn't deliver
obviously having a large number of ROs doesn't automatically mean an IF is bad or will fail. it just means the author is potentially biting off more than they can chew. hence, red flag.
"nothing is a red flag to me that an IF will never be finished than half a dozen ROs" okay look I hate to be the person to mention this but you have 5 so like literally one less than half a dozen ROs.

how tf do you plan an if?? thinking of starting a draft after exams but I don't know how to plan it at all. please help 💔💔💔
I'm no expert, I fear, but here's some things that helped me:
I planned my endings first, and turned them into sort of a chart of how they're achieved. Every choice is working toward one of those results
the classic heroes journey/ basic plot structure will get you pretty far. just take that and like... branch off it for different choices
Keep your stats simple. In Sentience, there's only two stats that really matter, and everything else is just flavor text (or relationships)
don't go crazy on ROs either- nothing is a red flag to me that an IF will never be finished than half a dozen ROs
Remember that it's a game just as much a story. the fun (for me) is in finding the unique paths. treasure down every turn. but counterpoint: too much branching right off the bat will only overwhelm you and the reader
done's better than perfect. rewrites are the mind killer; don't fall for it. chop up what you already have and frankenstein it back together before you start over
this is sort of ridiculous and might be bad advice lmao, but I literally build my chapters in twine with blank passages before writing, and tag them as 'unfinished' to keep track. it forces me to have a balance of choices/branches and is a good visual for progress
Hiya! I'm in the middle of my first playthrough, and I really really love the story so far but I desperately need to know how many times I have to hit the "Not now, not ever." button to get an easter egg. Or just confirmation that that's not real and I'm crazy, I'm cool with either!
Please, the little goblins in my brain won't let me proceed, I've been stuck for like 5 whole minutes
sounds like something i would do lmao, but that one's just an infinite loop.

hi there! im new to sentience (and also IF in general?) (also absolutely obsessed with it, I am rotating the concept in my mind 24/7) and I have to ask - are you continuing the story elsewhere or will it continue to be on itch? I'm not sure of how the process works :)
hi hi welcome to the rat pack
it will continue to be on Itch! i fear I haven't made much progress lately but hopefully now that it's summer i'll be able to wrassle my brain into focus and get an update out
y'know I really think Kat is such a good romantic option for Io because she's odd herself and she likes odd. Like, I feel like she's compatible with a less human Io more than the rest of the cast. She's the least likely to try and squeeze them into a human shape? Idk kinda a weird thought, I just think the two have such a good dynamic.
it's a fine line- she loves inhuman Io, will actively celebrate and encourage that weirdness, but she'll also be annoyed by and mistrustful of a very religious/divine Io.
i desperately want to see IO's early flirting attempts. I see their social skills now, back then they must've been so bad my god. Imagining Val trying not to cringe.
