“Dijkstra’s subjects approach the viewer so directly that their insecurity is legible on their faces and bodies. Despite the tell-tale characteristics of dress and hairstyle, they retain their own individual mystery. By her choice of subjects and naming of their home towns, she raises questions of identity, but does not answer them… The photographs do not encourage direct identification with their subjects, for Dijkstra keeps them in a distant perspective. In her choice of subjects she aims at a particular element that catches every eye: all the people she has photographed - whether teenagers, young bull-fighters, or women who have just given birth - are vulnerable, sensitive individuals in a stage of transition.
