go read annihilation it's good. it has lighthouses, gay people, body horror, plants, weird poems, second person narration occasionally, did i mention the body horror,
Let me raise this by two other books that LIE that I also adore-
Acceptance, the third out of four in the Southern Reach trilogy (don’t worry about it) by Jeff VanderMeer made me cry like a baby and has second person sections focusing on a character you despise in the first book but can’t leave the third without aching with grief for. The whole series is about how we deal with the incomprehensible and move forward (or don’t) despite life and/or world shattering events. Also freaky-yet-beautiful eco body horror shit for TLT fans (me, I’m the fans).
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez has lovely second person narrative sections that play into the layer of the book that is about storytelling itself. It’s an epic in the ancient and most grand sense of that word. It uses first, second, and third person narration to tell a story that is all at once about our connections to family and homeland, the nature of love, and the fall of a tyrannical dynasty. The style takes some getting used to but is well worth sticking with because it is part of what lets this story be so intricate and intimate. Also, it’s queer (for TLT fans). I will never stop recommending it.

'The Kelpie Pond' by Jaimie Whitbread
Jeff VanderMeer explores the failure of language, climate change, the fallibility of human institutions, ecstatic visions, and much more in
The thing that got me to love Authority was connecting it to my time at a too big, too old, too culturally strange company. The way VanderMeer uses the breakdown of language to link the cosmic horror of Area X with the more mundane horror of the disfunction at the Southern Reach is just so good.

okay but what if - and hang with me here - you left me to go explore an incomprehensible landscape and what if you returned to me, a shell of yourself before dying, and what if i followed you into that landscape, for all but you, for only my own selfish reasons, and what if i saw you there, in the eye of a dolphin, and what if i, on and island, found you there as and owl and what if i fed you mice and you caught me rabbits, and what if, after thirty years, i discovered you there, dead, in the forest. what then? what would i be to say? that i did not miss you?
