I think part of what Legion is doing so that it avoids skewing too hard to the born evil mental illness side is the existence of SYDNEYYYY!!!

You’ll be a teenager in the worst of circumstances and do shitty things to hurt yourself and others because that’s the only way you know how to act on the world. You’re hopelessly lonely, and you feel doomed to forever be in that state.

And well, it’s not love that saves you, exactly. It is, to some extent, to have someone who understands you and doesn’t try to eat your heart, at least at present. It’s that you’re able to start healing.

Being a good person is slow. And small. And boring. It’s the steady ground under you that you take to be better.

Ultimately, the point is that you have a choice. Other people will hurt you, and while it’s understandable to lash out, you have to be a better person. You have to understand that other people are people. Everyone has autonomy, including you.

What the hell do you mean by "so that it avoids skewing too hard to the born evil mental illness side"? The whole show is about the saneism behind that belief system and how abusers manipulate saneists to help them abuse survivors because they believe that nonsense. The Shadow King isn't evil mentally ill he's a literal demon from the astral plane.

Syd is a parallel to David on this theme because she's doing mental illness "correctly" by saneist standards and has the privilege of support from her peers.
