You faces that stay in the mind wherever we are and whatever we are seeing.
The beginnings of love always take the form of an image.
The haunting Visible.
A visible that is not simply diurnal but involuntary (phantasm) and not simply involuntary but nocturnal (oneiric). There is an Arabic tale in which the hero, as he is suddenly falling in love and while staring intently at the face of the woman he is to love, curiously says to himself: ‘Perception, become image. Image, shrink yourself. Image, go your way beneath my eyelids. Image, enter the blood of my heart.’
Pascal Quignard, The Fount of Time. Last Kingdom II
