Had to reset my eBay password the other day and saw that I created my account in 2001. Back when eBay was this small, plucky little website that I could buy second-hand games consoles from. 2001. Most of the people on the (not boomer-AI) Internet are younger than my account.
Then I remembered using Word before autosave was invented. Man. No feeling like losing the last 3hrs work the program fucking crashes. So many essays eaten. They were dark days. Dicing with death. Balancing on the highwire above the abyss.
For anyone wondering, the PhD student's name is Myra Cheng.
Here's a link to an article about the study from the Stanford Report: link.
Across three preregistered studies, participants interacting with sycophantic AI became more convinced of their own rightness and less willing to repair relationships. Yet at the same time, participants rated sycophantic AI models as higher quality, more trustworthy, and more desirable for future use, which may explain why this behavior has persisted despite its harmful impacts.
Myra Cheng et al. "Sycophantic AI decreases prosocial intentions and promotes dependence." Science 391, eaec8352 (2026).

Here's how wild our political system is. Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, and just over 75,000 people were eligible to vote. Wes Streeting, another MP, has already said that he wants to challenge the current PM. 20% of Labour MPs will need to say they want a new leader, which is currently 81 MPs. In that leadership race every member of the Labour Party gets a vote. Not just MPs but regular members.
The leadership vote isn't actually to elect the Prime Minister, it's to elect the head of the Labour Party and because Labour are in power the head of the party is also the PM. There are about 330,000 Labour Party members. (As a member of one of the UK's largest trade unions I also get a vote, despite hating the modern Labour Party and all who sail in her.)
So, we could have a new PM voted in by just over 400,000 self-selected people through a three-stage process that no one really understands.
Oh, and our head of state is a pensioner whose very very very distant ancestor killed a distant relative almost 1,000 years ago. Who is also the head of the state religion cause a slightly less distant ancestor wanted a son to inherit the position but ended up with a daughter inheriting anyways.
You know how the English language is three languages in a trench coat luring other languages in a dark alley and mugging them? Our political system is three syphalitic families in an ermine robe who've replaced their rotten limbs with whatever detritus was within reach.
Non-obligatory Pride Post
My pride post is that it happens slowly.
I think a lot of us grow up trying to be someone else. Someone accepted, the person our families and our society wants us to be. Anything that's real and authentic gets labelled 'dangerous'.
I didn't start accepting who I was until my mid-thirties. I'd spent my whole life up to that point knowing that there was this tiny person inside my head piloting the meat suit and I couldn't wait for the pilot to finally live in the real world.
So I brought a new wardrobe, endured a lot of uncomfortable conversations, stopped talking to my family, fought for hormones... And nothing happened. You know, the pilot was still piloting and everything was still a threat to my life.
The other day, there was a guy at the house fixing the sofa. My partner messaged me to say it was done. I was so fucking ecstatic. I messaged back that the sofa guy and I were now best friends, we were going to get pizza and go bowling and I was going to let him win.
And I sat back and waited for the spike of anxiety. Like, now I'd said it it was going to happen and I'd have to spend time with this guy and I'd have to be his friend and be vulnerable with him and there was nothing worse, nothing worse, nothing worse...
The anxiety didn't come. Just had the thought off, 'haha yeah, if it ever did happen maybe we would get on'.
It happens slowly. Living authentically is a verb. The more you do it, the deeper its roots get into you.

So here's the thing. In A New Hope, Obi-Wan isn't wearing Jedi robes. Owen Lars, Luke's uncle, is wearing the same outfit as Obi-Wan. Owen is a farmer.
So Obi-Wan is wearing a farmer's outfit.
And now I can't help but picture Obi-Wan being a grizzeled sensai Jedi master in, like, a check shirt and dirty jeans. Sacrificing himself like he's spent all day riding a tractor. Opening Luke's eyes to the Force with a half-drunk beer in his hand. Appearing as a Force ghost like he's just back from Taylors Supplies after getting a dozen sacks of hog feed.
And you know... I thought it would be funny. But it just somehow increases his gravitas, you know?
It is 3,000 years in the future. After falling into a freezer and being defrosted I am presenting my dissertation on A New Hope. I argue that it's a reaction against the Vietnam war and US military and economic expansionism, citing The Deer Hunter, Apocalypse Now, and Full Metal Jacket to demonstrate the affect the war had on the American psyche. I also offer numerous corrections to the text. I do not have the natural charisma or social corrections to challenge the accepted wisdom and the professors drum me out of the university, and A New Hope remains understood as an exploration of the AI wars in the late 2000s/early 2100s, along with The Matrix, the Terminator franchise, and Reddit.
I slink away and make a living running an ancient American-themed restaurant where all the servers wear three piece suits and customers dress up in Klan attire to "get into character". I am British.
New on the site. This is just a place for me to put any thoughts, now that all other social media is an absolute Nazi trashfire
