When I hear the words “opioid epidemic” I cringe.
I’m not an addict. My 30 day prescription (that my rheumatology specialist writes for 1 pill every 8 hours) lasts me 2-3 months on average. I don’t abuse my painkillers; in fact, I probably take them less than I should. Nonetheless, the stigma attached to my particular painkillers leads many to believe I’m an addict.
I have 6 chronic pain diseases. I’m being tested for a 7th. I deal with more pain in a day than most can handle on their worst day. The pain I endure would send 99% of people to the ER. That is the pain I feel DAILY. Opioids are my only option. I’ve taken everything else, and these drugs are the only thing that helps (albeit briefly). The only other relief I can get is from marijuana, which is now available to me legally in PA, but I have to wait 2 years for my MMJ card.
The stigma of fighting pain (most of mine which comes from 2 autoimmune diseases that have no cure) is unacceptable. Please educate yourself before passing judgement. If you have any questions, ask me.
