One of the challenges facing public libraries in the United States right now is e-book collections. The public generally isn't aware that libraries buy monthly or annual subscriptions of e-books from for-profit businesses - that's how we're able to provide ebooks and audiobooks and ecomics. It's not like each library branch, or even larger library systems have the tech infrastructure to maintain and loan out millions of books. Which is why there's limits on e-borrows: we can only afford so many licenses for each book, and we're charged for each of them.

And now you add in the very real concern about the future of e-borrows with regards to ads. Public libraries don't own the books. We can't control what is done with that user experience. If the third-party company who owns the lease on that book decides that they need to increase profits or pay the fees they pay to the publishing houses for that lending right, then there are going to be ads in your e-borrows.

And it's not like public libraries can then just switch to a new subscription with a different vendor. There are only so many e-media lenders and most of them hold a monopoly on licenses and lending rights.

So while we absolutely want people to check out and use e-borrows, we are restricted by cost. And now we have to content with the potential of ads. We know some people prefer e-borrows because of accessibility issues (distance to the library, open hours, accessibility features on devices). But there may come a time when coming to the library and checking out a physical book / CD / audiobook etc really is the only way to enjoy media without interruptions by third-party advertisers. And that sucks.

Let's talk about chatbots. The pros: they are free and readily available. The cons: according to the American Psychology Association, Ai chatbots can reinforce negative behavior and deepen psychosis, and flatter users rather than offer actual counseling. Additionally, any AI can suffer from hallucinations and can pull from heavily biased data sets. While they may be the cheaper, more readily available option, they aren't the safest or the most reliable.

Break out of your "comfort zone" and read something from a new perspective - you might discover that expanding that zone is exciting, empowering, and ultimately provides a great sense of comfort by making the unfamiliar more familiar. Reading (or listening or watching, however you prefer to access media) beyond the familiar expands your capability for empathy and enriches your perspective of the world!

Public libraries hosting summer reading bingo games often offer a "try a new genre" square. And books from public libraries are free, so you can try a new genre out without investing anything other than your time!
