Sameblod / Sami Blood by Amanda Kernell (2016)
This film is about Elle Marja, a girl from the indigenous Sami people living in the north of Sweden. Elle Marja is young during the 1930s, when eugenics and phrenology were wide-spread. Faced with racism at every turn, she grows to hate her culture and wants desperately to escape it.
This is an amazing and harrowing film about the Swedish oppression of the Sami people. I was reminded of the Maria Gripe quote, “Children are what you make them.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better portrayal of self-hatred brought on by constant prejudice. It was heartbreaking to see Elle Marja suffocated both by the expectations put upon her as a Sami girl, and by her own attempts to leave it all behind, never getting to be a whole person in her own right.
At the same time, it’s a tender coming-of-age film with a lot of compassion for its protagonist, and some truly loving scenes between her and her sister, so if you’re one of those viewers who can’t stand endless misery - I am too, and this isn’t that kind of film.
Go see this film.
Oh, and you know how people defend whitewashed or otherwise non-diverse casting with “they want the best actor for the job”? Amanda Kernell wanted to cast two teenage sisters who both spoke South Sami (a language with only 500 fluent speakers) and who ideally worked with reindeer herding. She found a pair, and they’re amazing actresses, especially Lene Cecilia Sparrok in the leading role. Excuses are just excuses.
大家好!星期一快乐!
notes from the dialogue in du chinese, which i recommend.
i also learned a new expression about something that happened to me last week:
被狗咬了一口 。 bèi gǒu yǎole yīkǒu: get bitten by a dog
these are literally the only villain redemption arcs that are good, so if you’re a writer, take notes:

#i feel like most show and movie-makers who bring in a combative dynamic in their romantic leads miss the fundamental point: #there are couples who argue because they don’t like each other (bad to watch/bad take/go back to film school) #and couples who argue precisely because they DO like each other (narrative gold) #they’re not arguing because their personalities are fundamentally in conflict #like their baseline of reality is valuing different things which leads to friction #it has to feel more like they’re arguing because with anyone else? they’d be gone before they even got to this level of disagreement #they’re only arguing BECAUSE what the other person thinks and does and says is important #‘this person is IMPORTANT to me and they’re WRONG and it’s UPSETTING that those two things co-exist!’ #like beatrice and benedick aren’t arguing with random inhabitants of messina #they’re arguing with the other specifically because they’re the only one who matters #the mummy #(also the fact that these two arguing with anyone else? competent verbose and focussed) #(arguing with each other? resort to saying the word ‘fine’ five in increasing tones of urgency and desperation: POETIC CINEMA) (Harrietvane)
Yeah I know it's a joke now my bad.

So fucked up that the girl who raised over $100k for the australian bushfires by selling nudes got disowned by her family and basically ostracized for single handedly making a huge impact to save the environment. People act like sex work is inherently linked to immorality but when a beautiful woman wants to use her agency and sexuality as an objective force for good she is totally demonized and has her life ruined. She is a pillar of morality and she deserves her name in the history books as a conservation hero!
This just in: If you want to enjoy a service (nudes, porn, strippers, prostitution etc) but simultaneous want to demonize those who provide it (sex workers), you are a clown emperor. Look upon your works, ye plighty, and weep
