Q&A From The "Our Tumblr Bookstore" Community
What was the inspiration behind Changeling?
I've talked a little bit about this before, but there were a couple of inspirational moments that helped form the foundation for Changeling.
The first was when I read a series of books and thought; "Eh, they're okay. I feel like I'd have done a few of those plotpoints differently though."
And then I proceeded to outline what I'd have done differently... which turned into it's own thing REALLY quickly, completely unrelated to the series I'd read entirely.
No, I won't name the series. I have the greatest respect for fellow authors, and the books were good, they just left me feeling inspired to do something different.
The second major inspiration for Changeling was the 2019 film "Dark Waters" that is based on the real lawsuits againse Du Pont where they were dumping toxic chemicals that are known as forever chemicals because they never break down in the enviroment. The film is well worth a watch, tbh, if you're so inclined.
Regardless, this type of chemical, that can never be destroyed, and is in 99% of all lifeforms on the planet, as a direct result of Du Pont's actions, made me wonder about what that would do to creatures that relied on human blood for sustenance; Ie Vampires, and that led me directly into the creation of the Kavians.
Also, one of your main characters, Booker, is the MCβs best friend/brother figure. It isnβt always very common to see bonds in romantasy that are so close while still being platonic. Why do you feel that this type of bond is important to represent?
In terms of the book itself, and the plot, Booker is important because he shows the reader what a fey should be, which is a good contrast for Lizzy who is, and has always felt like an outsider, in the fey realm.
But more broadly, I think it's important to show different types of connections. Very few people, in reality, are islands, and our connections and those we choose to link our lives to, shape us and we shape them.
Booker and Lizzy have an almost unhealthy level of co-dependance, because they've only ever been able to lean on each other, and showing that throughout Changeling, and how it changes as both of their social circles expand, is important to not only ground the characters, but because, hopefully, people can relate to this kind of "Supportive against all odds" and "With you to the end of the line, and damn the odds" type of connections as well.
