I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with relating to characters, “they’re literally me” etc but if that’s the only way you engage with stories you’re kinda missing the whole point of Characters being vehicles through which we can see perspectives outside of our own. and also you’re going to get upset when the Character acts in a way that is not Personally Relatable to You

#when people get big mad to to point of taking character critiques personally it is time to seek help #<prev yess #the setting and narrative contextualize the characters' actions #but I think sometimes people focus in on a character when it was really the story that moved them #which is very human #but without context would the character even be the same?#edit: I keep thinking about this and I suppose the context also includes the writers' biases #and that critique is a healthy and normal way of engaging with art #personally I think amoral characters who act to drive the plot forward are more interesting #morality is contextual and you shouldn't feel guilty for sympathizing with a character who's different from you
