This is a classic. Ive had 4 different teachers show me this over the years, and my first year Irish class studied it exam style. It was the first piece that we studied and everyone LOVED it, people were quoting it all the time. Every second conversation had someone using a line from it. It's a crows pleaser and simple to listen to even without the subtitles provided. It also has a great storyline about a man who is fed up with his life in China and learns Irish to move over here, and well (bhuel) , I won't spoil the plot twist for you

It's the day of the oral exams and everyone is terrified (bhí imní an domhain ar gach duine), people are rehearsing in the bathrooms and speaking French instead of English, the stuff that half of them come out with is absolutely gas, this one is such a bit of craic, I was in stitches. IT'S CILLIAN MURPHY AG CAINT AS GAEILGE!!! You can't beat a bit of Cillian, he's a national treasure. And this is 2000 Cillian, he's so young (this was before I was born) he's in the Gaeltacht for his holidays with a grumpy friend, on a job to sell some Putchín, and he is everyone's favourite sweetgeart, a bit of a himbo, and a respecter of old ladies. This is a short story about a little girl (cailín beag) who's class is about to make their 1st Holy Communion, but she doesn't believe in God (ní creideann sí i nDia). She's everyone is trying to convince her that god is real and she's just like "nope, read a bit of Darwin, he's great, I'm off to collect worms", even to the priests face and towards the end there's a bitter sweet twist which gives a LOT of background. This was a nice, easy watch, the little girls was so cute, there were a couple of laughs (cúpla gáire) and the vocab was nice and simple

It has everything from how to congugate regular verbs and every irregular verb, how to put things into questions, how to reply in the affirmative/the negative, useful question words, prepositions, all of the essentials. It's okay if you don't understand all of it, I didn't at first, but now I love this cheat sheet

I think I figured out why tonight (not like it took me 5 years or anything. Go me).

All 5 / 6 of them have strong, central sovereignty / kingship associations. Additionally, most carry the epithet of “Great Queen” or “Queen” of some form- and have strong associations with specific regions of Ireland (specifically in the case of this aspect of sovereignty).

All 5 / 6 of them act as judges or oracles at varying points. 

All 5 / 6 of them enact various forms of righteous vengeance, retribution, and retaliation- or participate in battles based mostly in the concepts of tradition, protection, and rightfulness.

Most of those acts are against important people… And most of them are people who wronged them, broke the codes (legal or moral), just didn’t measure up, or didn’t learn their lessons or heed their warnings.

If you acknowledge that in conjunction with the mythos that states that one is (or all are) sister to Fódla, Ériu, and Banba- who are all physical personifications of the land of Ireland itself, from whom the traditional names of Ireland are derived?

They become less “War Deities”, in my opinion… Hell, I think they transcend War entirely; it feels more like they’re their sister’s keepers than anything else.

I think they’re rightfully the protectors of the land and the judges of those who inherit it- and punisher and executioner of those who violate it… Further, I feel like they are the representatives, and potentially the guardians, of the contract with the Tuatha Dé.
