i used to hear a simple song

"So, it's only us, huh?" I smile. The world starts caving in, the radiation from broken artillery heats up the air. The sun starts to set. You take off your armor, and I take off my gas mask, inhaling the air for one last time. We look eye to eye and smile. You squeeze my hand, and I nod.

A thousand miles away from home, but I still feel at home when I'm with you. We lie down and close our eyes. I am at peace; whatever comes after this, I'll take it up as long as I'm with you. Hand in hand, we feel the warmth of each other for one last time as the life leaves our bodies. You made death feel like a cup of hot chocolate on a winter evening.

We lie there, two corpses amongst a thousand. With us, humanity is erased, and the earth remains nothing but a wasteland post-war.
