In ancient parts of Portugal the pig pens or furdas are as cool and well made as the castles and are probably as old or older. This is one of a couple near the top of the mountain at Monsanto Portugal. They all have the turf roof and when the pen is set on bedrock the water trough is carved right into that. Well stacked stone walls enclosed the pigs which were small and like the local wild boars. I took this before sunrise exactly 5 years ago today. What a stunning place! I wish I could have spent a whole week walking around the mountain of Monsanto.
