Is "astronaut" still a word used in the RttS universe? Or did it fall out of use after "spacer" became the norm? If so, who is still called an astronaut?
"Astronaut" is an archaic term that brings to mind a specific historical era of exploration and its costume (early EVA suits). Spacers would not consider themselves astronauts, even ones that are [inter]stellar-travelers, i.e. astro-nauts, or those that use exosuits/spacesuits to do "outdoors work." (Also, "exosuit" typically refers a pressured suit made for work on a planet or moon's surface, "spacesuit" refers to a pressured suit made for microgravity.)
Probably the main reason "astronaut" fell out of use is because a shorter term become preferable when it referred to a large group of diversely skilled people. Real world example, "automobile" is a much rarer word than "car" nowadays, and the former probably brings to mind historical examples of the same machine.
