I want to know about the things going on in the world, and be an educated participant in society
but psychologically and biologically I canāt live my life to a continuous background chant ofĀ āeverything is awful, everything is awful, everything is awful,ā
and I still donāt really know where the balance is.

Venom (2018): deleted scene
The experiences of conventionally attractive people and conventionally unattractive people can be so jarringly different and it really deserves some conversation. But I hate how the only mention of this comes from incels or anti-feminists or other right aligned losers with not an ounce of nuance in their bones lmaooo
Like, your physical attractiveness can shape not just your interpersonal experiences but also real tangible things such as but no limited to whether or not you get a job or being believed as a victim or what kind of roles you can get as an actor or perhaps the length of a sentence or how much help is offered to you in a time of need etc. etc.
I think about this shit so much. And itās weird to have a conversation about because other males and attractive females usually donāt get it.
And by the time these āunattractiveā people get out and make friends sometimes a life full of outside-looking-in hasnāt prepared them for frequent social behavior. They lose twice.
Also, people use their social circles as status symbols pretty much right after puberty. So say an unattractive person makes friends with someone popular in a class. That friend isnāt going to make plans to hang out with them outside of that setting.
Maslowās Hierarchy of Needs even says belongingness is a human fundamental for fulfillment and purpose in life. You can only imagine how hard it must be for people who are also homeless.
Iām currently in a class that discuss the rhetoric of beauty across cultures and some of the articles weāve analyzed dealt with how some cultures, in particular east Asian ones, emphasize appearance as an indicator of skill and worth. Often, people get plastic surgery for their jobs, to the degree that not getting one puts you at a disadvantage.
Theres a little less nuance but the idea that beauty is an indicator of worth is so concrete that people are permanently changing their appearance to good results, they actually do get the job over conventionally unattractive people. At this stage, being unattractive is equivalent to being lazy because the ability to alter your appearance is there, but you arenāt taking it.
And that brings up classism in all of this because letās look at who can and cannot afford image altering procedures and products
Idk how articulate this is going to be, but this all makes me think about how fucked up those āpower of makeupā videos and Instagram /YouTube makeup culture is. You have all these conventially attractive upper middle class women telling other women, and usually young girls, to buy so and so product, all with the subtle (or not so subtle) implication that they will have the same status and looks if they do. Underlying that is the constant unspoken knowledge that using 23 makeup products totaling over $500 will make you more āattractiveā and therefore happier, more popular, Better.
Hopefully this wasnāt too off topic, its just all connected. Studies have shown that overweight women who do not dress up or wear makeup to Drs appointments are more likely to be misdiagnosed. Anecdotal evidence shows that women who do not conform to beauty standards by wearing makeup and performing femininity are less likely to be promoted or treated well at work, etc

A lot of people are really scared and angry because of the results of the newest climate change reports ā as they should be. But Iām already seeing a lot of posts and news reports like āHEREāS WHAT YOU CAN DO TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMINGā and bizarrely enough, the answers are never like āweed out climate change deniers from your government, impose strict new rules for the corporations that are Ā creating most of the emissions, pour government resources into alternate forms of fuel, etc.ā Itās always like ācarpool to work!ā
Look. Of course you should be working to reduce waste in your own life. But letās not fucking pretend that consumers are the ones who made this mess. You know what another recent study found? Just 100 companies are responsible for 71% of global emissions. If the rest of us stopped ALL WASTE and fucking ascended to a higher plane of existence that no longer requires consumption of any kind, the world would still be absolutely fucked if those 100 companies keep on as they do.
I hate this personal responsibility model when it comes to conservation. By ignoring the actual source of the problem and focusing on individuals instead, guess who gets targeted? The absolute most vulnerable individuals on the planet. When people advocate personal responsibility, somehow theyāre never talking about billionaires and their private jets. Theyāre creating straw bans that will make life more dangerous for people with disabilities. Theyāre shaming women for using disposable menstrual products. Theyāre criticizing the poor and destitute for using āwastefulā products because theyāre all they can afford. Theyāre making vaguely eugenic statements about getting people in āthird world countriesā to stop ~breeding~ so much. Itās monstrous.
Stop shaming consumers for the sins of corporations and their powerful investors. Stop placing the blame at the feet of the people who already have the hardest time getting through life. Do something, and by ādo somethingā I mean buy a reusable coffee cup on the way to fucking vote. Go to a protest. Call a representative. Demand accountability from the people who got us into this mess.
wait hold on yall didnt just use the machop that resists rollout, is immune to attract from female pokemon, can ko normal-types in like two hits if you just train it a little, and is basically given to you for free in the very same city you fight whitney????

As a fat person who is rarely ever complimented for my physical looks (aside from acceptable compliments for fat people), it drives me absolutely fucking bonkers when conventionally attractive people fish for compliments from me. Theyāve got a whole society that worships their body type and tells them that theyāre inherently amazing, just for being born with a good metabolism and no hormonal (or other specific health) issues. But theyāre gonna come to me and tell me how they donāt look good, or they feel ugly, or no one loves them, and Iām supposed to make them feel better. I just want to tell them to open a fucking magazine, or turn on the tv. Youāll get to see virtually every person there looking similar to you. I didnāt see a positive role model (ie. not the butt of fat jokes) that was beautiful and funny and successful and that never had their body questioned and who looked like me till I saw Melissa McCarthy in The Heat (came out in 2013, fyi). Iāve never seen clothing models built like me till last week when I found the GRRRL clothing line (plus size models for most fashion companies are acceptable fat, ie. big boobs and ass, barely a stomach, thick but not too thick legs). As a kid, I never dreamed of being a princess because the only people who looked like me in Disney films were evil, or side characters who took care of the princess. If conventionally attractive people are looking for a partner, they donāt have to worry about being fetishized, they can be loved for themselves, and their partner wonāt be questioned as to HOW or WHY they can love them. Their relationship will not have to be justified or explained, they will not face questions of āso⦠Like, [the fat partner] is never on top, right?ā or ādoesnāt it kinda ruin the sex when you canāt just move [the fat partner] around?ā. They wonāt be the running joke among their friends. If both partners are fat, they get even more wonderful bullshit to deal with. When dating, conventionally attractive people wonāt be accused of lying or misrepresenting themselves if they donāt post a full body picture and show up to a date fatter than what the date anticipated. Their bodies do not need to come with disclaimers. I can count the number of times my former partners told me Iām beautiful without a ābutā following it (3. With a ābutā following it; 5). I remember almost every compliment given to me by friends that was explicitly about my physical appearence and that didnāt skirt around me being fat (thereās acceptable ways to compliment a fat person. Ie. You have a nice face/personality, that clothing is slimming on you, you look healthy, etc. Iām tempted to include cute, but Iām on the fence about that one) Iām tired of being the bastion of self love, confidence, and body positivity for people whose only barrier in the way of their own self love and confidence is themselves. I didnāt have anyone to push me to this point where I can love myself and others completely, regardless of size. The only reason I am the way I am is because Iāve made myself this way, facing a society thatās continuously told me itās wrong to be happy and love myself as I am.
Thin privilege is a huge source of social capital for many people. Some people come to depend on it, so much that theyāll go begging to people with no thin privilege for it.Ā
A lot of effort can go into building your whole identity around looking thin enough to be 1) employable 2) dateable 3) medically treatable 4) some hipsterās muse. If tomorrow people stopped responding to social capital begging in the name of thin privilege then the value of that capital would drop and suddenly all that effort would be for nothing.Ā
People whose thinness is a major reason they were employed or had their pick of romantic/fucking partners or were able to get the surgery they needed know, at some level, the value of thinness in their lives. Thatās why youāre not going to find the vast majority of thin people doing any true work to devalue thin privilege. If anything, theyāll do a bunch of things that strengthen or maintain the value of thin privilege, whether they are engaging in those behaviors knowingly or not. Including horribly rude things like begging for thin privilege social capital from people who donāt have access to that social capital.
