THEY LIVE
1988, dir. John Carpenter
the thing that's dumb about the whole "can you be a fan of a video game if you're watching gameplay on youtube rather than playing the game yourself" discourse, is that people keep comparing that to "reading the wikipedia summary", when to me it's more comparable to "listening to an audiobook" because listening to a story being read is a fundamentally different experience from reading the book yourself, But i think it would be strange if people argued that listening to an audiobook means you're not experiencing the story at all. just because it's not the way you're generally suppose to engage with books as medium.
prev you can't leave this in the tags
oh thats me! i love games but i have chronic joint pain thats especially bad in my fingers, which is a huge obstacle. i CAN play games, and i do, but it's harder to do anything mechanically difficult (repetitive button presses, clicking and dragging, aiming steadily, etc) especially doing a lot of it often, which makes most combat-heavy games really difficult for me so i almost never play them. even with a controller it's still really difficult for me.
but more than that, a lot of story-heavy games (imo) you just want to sit down and play for hours; it's hard to find a place to stop, sometimes there's stretches where you can't save, or where if you quit you know you won't be able to remember what to do the next time you play, or you know you won't be able to stop thinking about a cliffhanger. for me it's not possible to sit gaming ANYWHERE for hours and not be in horrible pain, i just can't do that. that is the biggest obstacle for me, there's no position i can be in physically where i'm comfortably seated/reclined AND able to move my hands at angle to accurately and comfortably press keys. even with a controller and tv, that tv would have to be literally eye level (which i have never seen a tv mounted that low) to prevent neck pain.
and listen. i love silent hill. i have seen every cutscene from all the games (except f, but including the arcade game) but i have never played any of them. because i know i could do it, but it wouldn't be worth it to me. it would be a lot of my money to pay to be in pain for a long time just for a hobby. gaming videos (esp silent playthroughs!) are so important to me because they require way less of my time and effort, and i never really thought of it as more accessible but thats exactly what it is

zinetober day 12....
I would scoop this up so fast if I saw this for sale at a booth.
so frustrating to be a skeptic with a sense of whimsy because like. I want there to be cryptids. I want there to be magic. I want there to be evidence of something we don't fully understand and can't explain. but then 99% of the "proof" out there for that stuff is like. the most obvious scam you've ever seen in your life.

Yeah but it makes you more likely to find the science miraculous and wonderful.
Like for me? I'm a magical thinker, and I love the supernatural. I love ghosts and cryptids. But I love asking, "What are the possible explanations for this?" more. I see something paranormal, and my brain immediately goes, "This could be ten different things, but is IS something."
Because the science is already there. There already is an answer. It just may not be obvious or easy for us. It may not be something we can understand now, but it's always there waiting for us.
It's one thing to go, "Ghosts are such a neat idea but I doubt they're real." It's an entirely different thing to go, "There is an explanation for this, but it's something we can't understand yet." I love that the science is waiting for me. That's why Mulder loves Scully.
