Sneezy (1937) vs. Sneezy (2025)
What got me into the whole snez thing is simply the original dwarf from Disney's first animated feature film, but it isn't so much the character itself - it's the comedian behind the character.
Billy Gilbert's entire schtick was the blustery, oafish big guy who's sneezes were strong, windy, maybe spitty, who knows. It's that sense of comedic timing too, and not even just the snez, that makes it all so amusing to watch. Very few actors or actresses can really pull that off, I feel: a build-up and a hitch. It worked in the golden days of comedy where slapstick and buffoonery were simply what worked. That being said, we all know the story, Walt went and made a dwarf that Billy couldn't resist passing down the offer and signed on for the role. He'd go on to play Willie the Giant, and did as much straightforward radio plays and movies without sneezing in it too, so he had a pretty balanced career, I'd say. It's that gusto, that 'Oh, no' that I like about this particular character - the strong winds, sending people flying backwards, the wind - and as someone into animation, the finer details, is why I think we sorta think of this guy when it comes to my introduction to the whole snez thing.
I kinda wish those little visual details, the expressions, and that sense of "Uh oh" that comes with a snez was carried into the remake, but... Sadly, yeah, it wasn't. It just didn't land, for me. He felt like a normal guy going through the motions. He talked like your average cartoon character on cable TV, he felt average, and balanced out. The actor did his best, lol, so I'm not gonna knock on him or anyone else. This is a character you'd wanna joke around and meme with with the whole 'fus do rah dragonborn' meme from back in the day. If you're gonna name a dwarf 'Sneezy' make him pack a punch like the north wind, man, this is the same dwarf that sent a group of animals flying in the opposite direction, lol. The 7D got that right, even if I can't say I'm particularly fond of Sneezy's voice, lol.
