Torture smells like spring.

Like daffodils and tulips and snowdrops. Like the bouquets brought inside from the manor gardens to lend their life to cold stone walls that house criminals. Easter mixed with madness makes sense in this twisted landscape; Draco’s only chance at survival is to endure it. He knows this. But that doesn’t quell the twitching in his calves, the flexing in his fingers.

Granger lifts her hand off the floor and Draco nearly loses his lunch, stomach churning as he watches her extend her arm, reaching through the translucent cord, reaching towards him. He tries to blink it away, blink blink blink, but both she and the cord are stubborn, persistent things.

Hour: One

When does war begin?

Hermione thinks she could probably trace it back to her first year at Hogwarts, because a war began then, when Harry first met Voldemort as an opponent rather than a child. Or, perhaps, it was when Hermione first received her Hogwarts acceptance letter; when a young girl saw her world change, and the wizarding world saw another Mudblood. Or maybe it was when Dumbledore was murdered on a tower, in a structure of what was to be a haven for the Light.

Maybe it is bigger than just them though. War. Perhaps the first war just never really ended. Maybe it began with the start of time and the first Muggleborn. Tonks will tell her, days and days from now, that war just never stops - it builds, climaxes, ebbs, and builds again. But Hermione is not the sort of person who can believe in a world that can find no peace.

She watches the spirals of smoke, the wreckage of buildings, the blank air for a Dumbledore that is not there, the useless healer squad, the fires that climb the sides of the shops and homes until that is all you see, and then the team of Aurors that have come too late. She watches the Mark, bold and ugly above the chaos, and Moody’s face grave and lined and spoiled with the acid of battles and hardships.

Ron’s fingers are twisted in the fabric at the back of her shirt, and Harry stands just ahead of them like the last solid structure in the entire city.

And Hermione knows, with Lavender muffling her cries behind the scarf she has found under ash (Parvati… Parvati… Parvati, she says over and over again), that this is the start of war.

“Again,” she breathes. It’s barely a word, barely a whisper, barely a command. But it’s one I’m happy to follow. She doesn’t want to hear a stranger reciting Shakespeare’s Sonnets. She wants verses—biting, passionate ones—and she wants them from me.

It’s laughable when I think about it. But I’m not laughing, and neither is she. It’s hard to, when her eyes darken and her breath catches and lust cracks like a lightning strike through every nerve in my body.

"It was human nature to seek connection, knowledge, and meaning through an avenue as primal as touch, and in that moment, it was okay to stop denying that she was hungry for it.

Starving to be seen.

Ravenous for a belonging that was all hers.

Proof that she wasn't alone.

To feel something. Anything.

It all reminded her, chanting over and over and over again, that this was Malfoy kissing her. Malfoy touching her. Malfoy with whom she had fallen into a rhythm of lips and hands, a delicious push and pull, a sharp rise and a steep fall. Malfoy that had her heart lodged in her throat, had her hands shaking from the stress and strain of angling her head just so.

But it was also Malfoy that blindly walked them backwards, still holding on, kissing her thoroughly, not breaking the tenuous new connection. Not even when his legs hit the back of the stone bench Hermione had all but forgotten about. He sat and pulled her between his open legs, angling his head up, tilting hers down…

And yes.

Yes.

This could be it.

Aside from talking and arguing, breathing and sighing, kissing each other may have been what their mouths were made for.

But that wasn't right… because this meant nothing. It couldn't.

"Am I too heavy?" Hermione whispered when he shifted her on his lap for the third time.

Calculating eyes were focused on her in that intense way that made her unsteady, like she might sway on her feet if not for him beneath her. Malfoy never answered; he swallowed her question with a kiss so shockingly uncertain it hurt. But it was easy to use that hesitancy to assert herself, to guide him into kissing her exactly the way she wanted, showing him what she liked, letting him unlock her—just this once." - chapter 16

In honor of this, the week of my 26th birthday, here are 26 one-shot and short fic (under 20k) recommendations. Various pairings, genres, and ratings, listed according to the careful system of whatever I thought of first. The end result is a mix of old and new fics, popular stories and hidden-gems. Enjoy!

1. Les Pèlerins by @pacific-rimbaud (Dramione, 10k, M): A magnificently atmospheric story of Christmas in Paris and some of the best writing I’ve read this year. I read this in a candlelit room with a cup of tea, and that is an experience I cannot recommend highly enough.

2. Brick by @olivieblake (NottPott, 11.4k, M): The competitive Lego AU of all our dreams + contemplations of mental health and mortality and being human.

3. Eyes Closed by @olivieblake (Tom/Narcissa, 11.2k, M): A whirlwind of dark romance and a brilliant characterization of both Tom and Narcissa. I read all of Olivie’s one-shots in a row a little while ago and, for some reason I cannot quite explain, this one stands out to me several months later.

4. The First Rule of Fight Club by @ladykenz347 (Dramione,15.9k, M): An 8th year story with all the themes of healing and trauma you’d expect, but with a unique take and a tangible physicality that just grabs onto you.

5. Something About Summer Storms by @ladykenz347 (Dramione, 9.6k, M): A story of road trips and romance, sweetness and longing, and oh yes, there’s only one bed.

6. to seek, to find, to collide by @your-girl-is-lovely (Ginny/Tom, 3.2k, T): Sparse, poetic prose and beautifully poisonous intensity. This one’s a whirlwind.

7. This Indecision’s Killing Me by cinnamonfreckle (Ginny/Sirius, 3k, E): If you know me, you’ll know Ginny/Sirius is my fav rare-pair. This is one of my fav stories with this pairing and it’s so much fun.

8. Pure Imagination by @aibidil (Drarry, 14.9k, T): Probably the best representation of therapy I have read in fic and such a beautiful story. The mental health professional in me loves the CBT and the me in me loves the Drarry.

9. Learning Curve by @aibidil (Romione, 9.9k, E): Listen. You’re going to click on this fic, and read the summary, and be like, Diana, this sounds weird, why are you recommending this? Just trust me. Seriously. It’s sweet, sexy, SO funny, and friends-to-lovers at it’s best.

10. Two Truths and a Lie by Llaeyro (Wolfstar, 3.4k, E): Angst, sadness, pining, regret…and a happy ending. In other words, exactly what I want from Wolfstar.

11. To be Out of Your Own (and consumed by another) by @cassiaratheslytherpuff (Drarry, 18.3k, E): A dramatic case-fic with gorgeously written, well-developed characters and a sweet, blossoming relationship. Also, smut. (Mind the tags). 

12. Death Wish by @grangerdangerfics (Padma/Daphne, 3.5k, T): As a former camp person, summer camp AUs push all my buttons. This is an excellent one, as are all the fics in it’s collection.

13. Over/Under by @provocative-envy (Draco/Scabior, 15.9k, E): Another from the same collection, this one is less camp-focused, but SO. GOOD.

14. A Very Long Engagement by @theprongsletthatlived (Wolfstar, 6k, M): If you know me, you know I love complicated relationships, heartbreak, and debatably happy endings. If you also like these things, you will love this fic.

15. resolution by rougeatre (Wolfstar, 5k, T): New Years Wolfstar. The writing in this is so pretty and creative. There is quite a lot of pining.

16. Misfortune’s Bitter Storm by @onbeinganangel (Bill/Fleur/Tonks, 5.6k, E): This is a lot of sadness and fear mixed in with longing and desire, that culminates in an absolutely delicious resolution.

17. To Tame a Kitten (is to love) by @tsauergrass (Drarry, 13.8k, G): A brilliantly creative, funny, smart story in which Harry fosters kittens, including one rather special kitten…

18. Hopelessly Devoted to You by @writcraft (George/Harry, 9.7k, E): A pairing I never thought to want, but that turns out to be quite perfect. They consider their trauma. They go to musicals. They find comfort in each other. It’s lovely.

19. Is This The Place by @teacupniffler (Myrtle/Tom, 7.9k, M): As you might expect from the pairing, this is not a story with a happy ending. But what it does have, is one of the best characterizations of Tom I’ve ever read - he is manipulative and vile in a completely believable, familiar way.

20. In Harmonia Progressio by @olivieblake (NottPott, Dramione, 2.5k, T): A slightly silly, very funny, quite cute, and mildly poignant little story.

21. Cracked by @sportivetricks (Neville/Hermione, 6.4k, E): Would this even be a proper one-shot list without at least one piece of PWP? I think not. (There is a little plot and it’s as good as the rest of it. Which is: excellent.)

22. That’s What She Said by @provocative-envy (Ginny/Cho, 1k, T): Don’t you dare tell me that there’s anyone out there who doesn’t want to read a Ginny/Cho ice-skating AU. 

23. Divination for Dickheads by seefin (Drarry, 6.9k, G): Harry has a birthday party at an aquarium. Draco’s a professional seer. Ginny & Harry are BFFs. It’s all quite funny and sweet.

24. Transparency by @mightbewriting (Dramione, 4.9k, T): You are a ghost. You watch Dramione fall in love at Christmas. You enjoy a well done 2nd-person POV. You are having a strategic time.

25. To Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth by @onyx-and-elm (Dramione, 13.9k, E): I love this characterization of Hermione, the tension is unreal, and the take on patronus lore is fascinating. Very highly recommended.

26. Guilty by Association by DianaSkye (Ginny/Sirius, 14.1k, E): And a self-rec to close out ‘cause it’s my birthday and I do what I want. I cannot possibly give you a review, but I will inform you that this is my favourite thing I’ve written.

I’m sorry these reviews are so short! They are probably very unhelpful. But I promise all these fics are amazing and I could have written multiple paragraphs about any of them.
