āMost of what you think you know about Maslowās hierarchy of needs is wrong.
This is the model that we all learned in psych 101 is wrong [image of Maslowās pyramid is shown] where our basic physiological needs are at the bottom of the pyramid and achieving oneās full individual potential is at the apex.
What you may not have known is that Maslow spent 6 weeks with the Blackfoot First Nation in the summer of 1938. He learned about their worldview and the Blackfoot Tipi, appropriated and misrepresented their perspective to establish his own Maslowās hierarchy, and then didnāt give them credit.
[Image of Maslowās pyramid and Blackfoot tipi shown, described below]
According to the Blackfoot Tipi, self-actualization is at the bottom of the pyramid. In the middle we have belonging and community actualization, where people take care of each other and help each other with their basic needs. And at the top, we have cultural perpetuity, which is teaching each other how to live in harmony with the land and achieve community actualization through generations.
It makes so much sense, right? Taking care of oneself is not enough. We need to take care of each other and our community.
This is why we need to decolonize psychology.ā
If anyone wants to learn more about this I suggest watching the late Narcisse Blood's interviews on Maslow and the influence of Blackfoot worldviews on his work thru the Blackfoot Digital Library, they're very in-depth
Eldon Yellowhorn also discusses Maslow and Blackfoot ways of knowing but I forget which interview it's in
Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
I first heard of Maslowās hierarchy of needs in an advertising course I took in college many years ago. I remember looking at the pyramid an
The picture at the start of the next paper shows Maslow at the reserve, btw.

I have referred to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs for as long as I can remember. I learned about it as a way of looking at the complete physica
Also this is good if you're interested in a very short introduction to tipi construction and their use as homes and visual records of important knowledge:
I much prefer the Siksika model to Maslow's. It places the individual at the base of the tipi, and the existential objective in that model is literally cosmic in scale. A self-actualized individual can better contribute to the community, and a self-actualized community and culture can perpetuate itself through time. The goal is so much larger than the realization of your own self, it's about being a part of a greater whole and ensuring it lasts into perpetuity.
tumblr tuesday: adam is not just kidding
So one thing that happens when youāve been here for a while is that you end up with this archive of how you got to where you are nowāa long lens of nostalgia on all the people youāve been, those youāve loved, and all the things youāve done.
Adam JK (@adamjkā) was one of the firstĀ Artists on Tumblrāheās literally been here for almost as long as we have! Since that first post, heās journaled, made friends, found his queer community, met his future husband, and made some really great art that people really love.
We asked Adam to share some of the moments that shaped his identityāas a person, an artist, a writer, a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. These are the posts he decided to talk about.
~
This post really sums up how I used Tumblr for a long time. It was my diary and I didnāt think anybody was paying attention (because they werenāt).
~
Usually in relationships, I was the one getting dumped, so when I had to break up with a guy, it felt so shitty, and I thought, āwhy isnāt there a thing for this?āThe minimum order was 500 balloons, so I had 499 too many and posted about them. People started ordering them. I got some minor press coverage, I even got ripped off a few times! My artāreally one of the first things I created that wasnāt for a clientāwas suddenly blowing up, and I put the profits (a few hundred dollars) back into this hobby of making novelty gift products nobody asked for.
~
Around age 21, I became internet friends with a network of āTumblr Gaysā that made me feel more comfortable being myself. I would take the bus from Baltimore to NYC on weekends to meet up and go out and pretend brunch was an entire personality. At some point, I met Walt Cessna, who was flooding Tumblr with photos around that time. I feel likeĀ this photoĀ captured me between two worlds, nervous about being on my own but excited to be my full queer self in New York.
~
In 2013 I started making these āeverything will be so good so soonā post-it note collages, and they took on a life of their own. So many people have told me this was their phone background or helped them through a hard time, and I learned the power of making hopeful, honest art. This particular reminder finds its way back to me just when I need it most, and Iām really proud to have re-drawn it for the back cover of my new book.
~
My husband and I were mutuals but never exchanged messages or anything until one day I caved and asked him out. We both fell pretty hard for each other, and it was interesting how we kept posting on Tumblr while knowing the other could see it. We would buy each other donuts and flowers and write cute notes and the whole fucking thing. Before Mitchell, I never dated a guy longer than three months. Before me, he never thought about marriage. Love is real, and Iām so glad I didnāt listen to anyone who made me feel like I couldnāt find it for some reason.
~
Tumblr⦠I love you. Thank you for being you!!!!!!
~
As it happens, Adam actually recently finished making a little blue book about learning to be a person and then being that person. So if you want to know where heās at today, hereās the trailer for that book. Happy Tuesday, Tumblr <3

Apologies for the format and need to zoom, but I thought this response was wonderful
Image is a picture of page 42 from The Sunday Times in the UK (undated). The page is called Style Voice, and the segment is called Dear Dolly, subtitled: āyour love, life and friendship dilemmas answered by Dolly Alderton.ā At the bottom of the page, there is a note that says āTo get your life dilemma answered by Dolly, email or send a voice note toĀ [email protected]Ā or DM @theststyle.
Text of the segment reads:
[submission]
Dear Dolly,
I was already a little overweight, but things spiralled during lockdown. As a home-schooling, working-from-home single parent to two children, there was little time for contemplative yoga or solo mini-marathons around the park. After contracting the virus (it dragged on and on) and then not being able to leave our tiny flat much due to the lockdown, the only excitement of the day seemed to be a gin and tonic at 6pm, rounds of Netflix and peanut butter on toast.
I eat when Iām stressed and when Iām bored, and I was very stressed and very bored. And now the buttons are popping off my jeans. My clothes donāt fit, I donāt want to spend a fortune buying pretty new things in āLā when I have to get back to āM.ā And how will I ever feel glamorous and attractive again after piling on the pounds and covering my face with a mask? Please help. I donāt want to be single for ever.
[response]
As I read your letter, the first thing I thought was what a challenging time youāve been through in the past six months. Youāve had to educate, entertain and care for not one but two young children, all day, every day, without the help of a partner, while being mostly confined indoors in a tiny living space. You contracted an illness that was largely unknown and potentially debilitating. All this happened during a time when you couldnāt see friends or extended family, or go to the pub, or go away, or go anywhere for that matter. I want you to read that back and acknowledge what a difficult set of circumstances youāve been living through recently.
With that in mind, Iām going to present you with a possibility: you havenāt overindulged at all. You havenāt eaten too much, you havenāt messed up a routine. You have been giving yourself exactly what youāve needed in a time of immense stress ā you have been in complete communion with your mind and body. Youāve allowed yourself the gentle anesthesia of a cold gin and tonic after a long day with kids, and restful nights with a comforting and familiar food as you prepare for the following morning. Youāve used your few spare hours to recuperate, instead of flinging yourself around your small flat in front of a YouTube exercise video or making complicated kale salads. All of this makes complete sense. You have not made any mistakes.
A clever thing the diet industry did to the collective consciousness is attach morals to eating: certain foods are bad (peanut butter on toast), certain ways of eating are bad (in front of Netflix). And if we are to believe the fallacy of āyou are what you eat,ā every time we put food in our mouths, we give ourselves permission to rate our morality. But our chosen meals arenāt proof of our goodness or badness. Deprivation or hyper-control doesnāt equate to health and virtue, appetite isnāt something feral and dangerous to be disciplined. Food is an inanimate object that we can use as we like ā to nourish, energize or comfort. How we eat will always be in flux depending on our circumstances, whether that be emotional or physical.
I think the best thing you can do is acquaint yourself with the idea of intuitive eating. Itās a seemingly simple concept that many of us have to relearn at some point in our lives. Intuitive eating is about tuning in to your body, listening to what it wants and responding compassionately. Itās about quietening the chatter youāve been absorbing your whole life ā all the contradictory rules and convoluted calorie counting ā and instead focusing on the requirements of your appetite and tastes. We are all born with an innate ability to do this (you never see a toddler leaving 20 per cent of its meal on a plate because it read an article saying this is what French women do), but tragically it is a skill that is stolen from so many of us.
Because another clever thing the diet industry did was make us believe that our instincts are wrong, that if we ate what we want when we wanted it, weād live off a mountain of Ć©clairs, a river of Baileys and nothing else. Thatās just not true. If you can find a way to eat intuitively, without any cycles of restriction and reward, your body will find its way to the weight where it is naturally most comfortable.
And if all that fails, try this: every time you go to feed yourself, imagine that you are feeding one of your children. Every time you finish a meal and you want to berate yourself for the decisions you made: imagine you are speaking to one of your children. If they came to you ā tired, anxious or ill ā would you give them a calorie-counted meal, or would you give them what they were craving? If they ate something that brought them joy, would you remind them afterwards that they could have eaten something that was less pleasurable but lower in fat? Would you tell them to take notice of the letter on the label in their clothes and attach a sense of self-worth to it? Would you let them believe that the letter on that label was an indicator of whether someone will fall in love with them?
The sad truth is women are conditioned to feel like physical failures if they donāt conform to an impossible specification, so the language of self-hatred is easily accessible to us. I donāt want to pretend that this propaganda isnāt incredibly powerful, and I donāt want you to feel even more self-hatred for taking it on and believing it. So, for now, try a trick instead: imagine you are your own child and care for yourself accordingly. That might be the only way youāll allow yourself the logic and kindness you deserve.

āCrazy Dionā Diamond at one of his sit-ins as a teenager in Arlington, VA. June 10, 1960
via reddit
All of those people around him are demons
hey guys! hereās some fun things i learned from this article about Dion Diamond:
he did these sit-ins by himself. like idk about you, but i always thought of sit-ins as organized by groups, what kind of bravery does it take, man
he didnāt tell anyone about it, like he was no glory-seeker about this. his parents didnāt even know until reporters started calling them up like āhey, did you know your son is in jail?
when someone called the cops heād skedaddle out the back door although he was sent to prison multiple times
the last time he got arrested was in Baton Rouge, and the cops were so sick of him that they told inmates theyād put in a good word for anyone who gave Diamond a hard time. (the inmates didnāt take the bait.)
heās still alive!
hark, a hero of our times!

Wouldn't it be good if everyone knew how good Nik Kershaw really is?Nik Kershaw is one of the most criminally unappreciated songwriters of the last 20 years. There are, as far as I can tell, two reasons for this: technology, and Howard Jones. Despite being a guitarist by trade, the songs on Kershaw...
Iāve been listening to this album for a month now.. A joy to run into the older version of a teenage idol and to discover that he continued to be awesome with age..Ā
āTo Be FrankĀ is less of a comeback than it is a rebirth. The Nik Kershaw ofĀ 15 MinutesĀ andĀ FrankĀ has very little in common with theĀ Human Racing/The RiddleĀ model. He's older, wiser, but most importantly, he's better. Alter egos and multiple personalities aside,Ā To Be FrankĀ is one of the most focused records Kershaw's ever done.ā
Blue Nile singer Paul Buchanan and David Peschek get teary-eyed discussing mortality, love and Mid Air, his first solo album- and his first release in 8 years
This is probably the best interview with a musician that Iāve ever read..
Paul Buchanan: Iām gonna be crying.
David Peschek: Iām getting you back, because the first time I listened to Mid Air I was on a train at rush hour and I burst into tears.
