and out of the darkness - you you you you you
[Description: a looping bouncy animation of grace and Rocky from project hail mary. Grace throws himself onto rocky for a hug, smiling and nuzzling his face to the top of Rocky's xenonite covered carapace. Rocky brings a claw up to ruffle Grace's hair and grace throws himself even more on top of rocky, rocky wrapping his arms around grace. End description.]

Common Green Lacewings: these tiny insects build loosely-woven cocoons that measure just 3-6mm (about 1/8 to 1/4 inch) in diameter
Each lacewing spends about 5 days maturing inside its cacoon, and then it cuts an opening in the top and emerges as a fully-developed adult.
Above: a common green lacewing emerging from its cocoon
Green lacewing larvae (genus Chrysopidae) are also known as "aphid lions," because they're voracious predators that often feed on aphids. They've also been known to prey upon caterpillars, leafhoppers, planthoppers, thrips, spiders, mites, and insect eggs, which is why they're widely used to help eradicate pests in agricultural contexts.
Once the lacewing nears the end of its larval stage, it builds a small cacoon out of silk and then tucks itself inside, allowing the pupal phase to begin. Its tiny green body is often partially visible through the thin, loosely-woven walls of the cacoon.
Above: a lacewing developing within its cocoon
These breathtaking photos of a lacewing climbing out of its cacoon were taken by a Danish photographer named Frederik Leck Fischer.
Above: the lacewing preparing to emerge
When the insect initially emerges, its wings and antennae are still compactly folded down against its body, and the wings have a dark, shriveled appearance that makes them almost unrecognizable.
Above: the fully-developed lacewing waiting for its wings to expand
The wings then gradually expand until they have reached their full size, which usually takes about an hour or two.
Above: the same lacewing just a few hours later
Fischer's photographs provide a stunning account of the entire process.

This is a rewritten version of a post that I originally published three years ago.

It’s okay to not want to have sex ever. It’s okay to never even try it.
I was 23 before it even occurred to me that not starting with sex ever was an option. The feeling of relief was so great I actually cried.
You don’t have to if you don’t want to. You can have a fine live without ever having sex, I promise you.
Also, it’s okay to never date anyone ever. It’s okay to never even try it if you don’t want to.
I wrote a master’s thesis on intentionally single people, and the number of them that said in various ways, “I didn’t know not dating people was even an option at first” was absolutely tragic. They honestly thought they had no choice and it never occurred to them that opting out was even a possibility available to them.
People honestly believe these are life experience you are required to have AND THEY ARE NOT.
You can just not have sex. You can just not date people. You can completely by-pass one or both of those things. Neither of those things are required to be healthy, happy, normal, mature, fulfilled, or any of the other bullshit notions that get attached to these things.

First up for the new official illustrations: Firestar!
Drawn by Johanna Tarkela, who is best known for the Polish Warriors covers. A character will be revealed over social media once a day this week!
Next up: our good buddy, Graystripe!
And now... the sweetie Brightheart!
Today's wasp of the day is Kikiki huna!
Credits
With a name that comes from Hawaiian and basically means "tiny bit", this is the smallest known flying insect! At her size, flying is more like moving through water so she makes due with feathery threads instead of clunky paddles for wings. She's smaller than some single celled organisms even! And yet she still retains all the complex functions of larger wasps. Researchers are interested in what this micro-wasp could possibly teach us about micro-robotics
Give it up for the itty bit!!
I don't have time for tumblr discourse they're calling the very hungry caterpillar degenerate art over on twitter
good art is when something looks like real life, the more real it looks the more better the art. abstracted figures give my trad children nightmares, one time they were exposed to cubism and couldn't go outside for a week
the world is in peril, and people are hurting
but even so, we can take comfort in knowing we have creature of wet slop. grins.
It’s name is Aplysia vaccaria, the black sea hare!
It eats algae and lives in intertidal and sub-tidal zones on the coast of Mexico and California. You can find it in tide pools there!
Quality wet slop animal c:
I would like to add that the colloquial name for this guy is the 'Black Sea Hare' because his antennae resemble rabbit ears!
