**While I like adding a pinch of biology and realism, Wreck Hounds is by no means a hard scifi setting. There's powers and brain worms and a buncha other silly stuff that I want to have in there, so keep that in mind.

There are a few other important intelligences hanging around (particularly of the artificially created and evil space radiation consciousness variety) and some other important stuff in general I still have to introduce pbut I'll have to add them to this post when I get to actually making updated info on them!

Humans: During the extended spacefaring time period, many of the ships participating in the Exodus weren't prepared to be housing people long term/didnt have facilities to store or remove bodies (being taken along because they were functional in space and you can fit people in there, that's about it). Cremation worked its way into almost all cultural practices around the dead at some stage or another since many preferred it/being able to have some of the ashes to the alternative: launching the person out into space (where they would likely become a potential impact risk with another craft or begin to orbit some of the largest craft). Currently, cremation is still the most common way to prepare a body after death. Funeral and grieving standards depend on the culture.

Prectikar: A lot of their original practices around the deceased are lost since during their colonization, the dead were either purposefully destroyed or taken by Cerest for research and resources (being melted down to core chemical components to provide elements for agriculture, printers, etc). Current funeral practices are as varied as humans' regarding clothing, behavior, what from the deceased is kept (ex. The tusks, depending on if the person was very significant to the family) generally involving the whole family and being focused around items and stories from the deceased rather than the body itself (even if the body is present; cremation is a popular option because it is cheaper and they arent breaking laws by buring xeno organic matter in the ground). Generally, greiving periods are very long, especially if the deceased was a partner (many will not take another partner or participate in courting at all afterwards).

Rossetians: Funeral practices vary, a lot of the time they involve a wardrobe change for the greiving (varying in degree of difference from normal clothing and time spent wearing it depending on your proximity to the deceased in life: sister, partner, father, coworker, etc etc). The horns of the deceased are often kept by the House. Greiving period is more of an extended/official leave than maternity/paternity leave, many Houses change practices across all Factions if someone dies.

Kixeli: Again, many of their original practices were not preserved. Current funerals are held with the whole community or just anyone who knew the person if they weren't a permanent member, many cultures symbolically send out a "body" made by the community to the ocean (or to the air, if they're inland). Greiving is done community wide, even if you didn't know the person their intense empathy feedback loops can make them feel the loss by being around people who did.

Cerest: Funerals are very complicated affairs depending on the size of the unit/the class of the people attending and the deceased. Smaller units have more intimate proceedings where sentiments about the dead can be discussed, but like with larger+higher class units the legal stuff/logistics of the death is also discussed (who will replace them in their job, what to do with the property, how to dispose of the body, reporting the death, medical bills, etc), the body of the deceased is not usually present-> the dominant cultural view is that the body is meant to be repurposed by/for the living so its normally sent off right away and will not often be fully seen again by their unit/clan of origin: donated to science, composted/melted down for resources, some units/clans eat some of it depending on how traditional they are. Funerals are not held for lost eggs/larva, to them those didn't live the same way a juvenile or adult did). Greiving is supposed to be brief, "the dead would want you to move on" but it's not like they can stop people from feeling grief about it.

A bigger, spikier mane is a feminine trait, specifically the dominant female in a pride (who is the “territorial” member that fights off rivals from territory borders and is the only reproductive female. One is shown in the top left). The pride is mostly female, the others typically hunt and make decisions for the pride with the input from their mother/the dominant female. Males are bigger and have a more prominent patch of hair on their hump (shown in some of the uncolored doodles up there). They are usually tending to children, guarding the nesting area, and doing other labor (such as cooking raw materials brought in by worker females). There’s usually only one adult male in a pride, who is paired with the territorial female (leading to their monarchy/ideas about monogamy and succession that are a bit more like humans’).

A “Greater Pride” is an alliance of multiple large prides that control an area of land, taking resource taxes from smaller prides in their territory in exchange for protection from other Greater Prides who may not share their culture or would be more exploitative. Previously, leaders of the largest, most influential Greater Prides were nobles under the Queen, enforcing her will and further funneling more resources to her territory in exchange for wealth+power+protection from invasion. Once their previous queen died and the Succession war started, these Greater Pride nobles are split between the three contenders (with some falling into complete disarray as they were attacked by their neighbors or fell to internal civil war). The Sandwing lands are a lawless place, with most struggling to survive after the collapse of herding/farming infrastructure, the rise of criminal prides, and invasion+occupation by non-sandwings and sandwings from the opposing sides.

Not too sure of the designs of the ladies themselves, but here’s a first pass at their flags. Three circles is a common motif across all the dragons’ religious and political symbolism because of the three moons.

Blister is portraying her scale patterns/dangerous tail bulb shape here, and also invoking eye/knowledge imagery because of her platform of using your innate cunning+intelligence as a dragon to triumph over base survival+advance sandwing technology and prosperity.

Burns flag is meant to depict clashing territorial females (spines and tails) and a vaguely flower-like shape (cactus-based, representing resilience and unity with the desert). Meant to align with her self-described military might and views on using sandwings’ natural strength and aggression to expand their territory and advance the world/take power and resources away from the hands of the other weaker, spoiled dragons who don’t know how to use what they have. I didn’t mean to draw it so much bigger lmao

Blazes flag is pretty obvious with its palm leaf+moon symbols and also includes some sandwing tails, intending to depict an oasis/peaceful scene where sandwings are working together to protect something (she has gained support not only through her charming personality, but also by promising to amend the wrongs of the previous Queen+not cause trouble and hoard power/wealth like her sisters, and also also runs on a platform of peace and cooperation with their neighbors. Like with her sisters, the veracity of these claims is up to debate.).

A lot of things about skywing society have changed recently. Aerie, once a term that was used to describe smaller family groups, can now be used to describe large tracts of land governed by a lead family of nobles, appointed to lead subsections of the Queens domain. The Cliff Skywings (ones from the northish mountain-forested regions) are the ones the other dragons are most familiar with and are currently the dominant group, with a Cliff skywing being the current queen, uniting disparate aeries under her newly formed military with the proposed goal of gaining more land and resources from their neighbors, drawing on the average Skywings’ desperation for better living conditions and security against famine and disease. Cliffs have a much more rigid gender divide (which they see as a reflection of their bodies’ Event-given “purposes”, the female lays eggs and more or less just leaves, leaving care of them with the males other than delivering kills), which has been reinforced further by legislation by the Queen (for example, adding “marriage” as a thing to officially lock down partners of a female rather than have it be a less formal arrangement/the males switch between partners and there wasn’t a lot of female supervision on eggs as long as new workers for the family were being made. The marriage thing was proposed to make it easier for females to ensure their eggs weren’t just being discarded/replaced with another females/their sire running off and not supporting the group, and to help make record-keeping and direct inheritance/successor stuff easier since again it makes sure that males aren’t running off with the eggs to do whatever (But the main motivation is that it helps keep property and wealth tied to the female, since she now has exclusivity with a specific pool of males to work with and can pass things directly to successors that for sure came from them. It also limits social mobility for males, keeping them reliant and in service to a female. This also allows the nobility to have a large group of suitors bound to them under threat of punishment and homelessness to raise more successors and workers for them). I’m still kinda working on this system some things may not work. It’s kind of a combo of birds of prey where females and males are different sizes for less hunting competition between each other (different prey size needs) and for the female to be able to defend the nest, except the male is the one in the nest raising eggs (having duller coloration to blend in). M are smaller because there’s usually a couple of them there in the nesting area, they work together and don’t need size because the female is providing food and defense). Plains and boreal are more monomorphic, sharing care more equally. Idk idk

Here’s a map of super generalized populations for those with very distinct groups based on appearance/environmental specialization btw. I wanted to figure out where im talking about here (does Not reflect past or present borders and is very messy I’ll need to work on it, this is just kinda where they tend to live). The text got smudged but it’s meant to say that open water seawings migrate around the continent. Technically should’ve added Icewings too since their polar guys look different but theyre found in just a very narrow strip at the very top left of land there.

The first obstacle is the rigid in-group politics between the dragons. The queendom territories aren't made up of all one type of dragon and have a broad mix of dragons, but it is understood that you're in the Skywing Queendom and the skywings there are the ones whose law you live under because there is a Skywing queen. This creates divisions based on physical dragon type, even if the average commoner skywing isnt at fault for the tax rate or the newest war effort. As of present there is a lot of generational resentment, stereotypes, and conflict between dragon types and a lotnod social pressure to stick to your own/look out for Your type. They're taught from a young age to meet other types of dragon with suspicion and aggression, holding your own group and your Queen above all else as a means of survival. Theres also the general view of adoption/egg and child raising in general. Many dragons live in harsh conditions where infant mortality is high and most groups cant support that many people resource-wise (leading to practices to control population, such as reproductive exclusivity to certain people and/or sacrifical/culling practices). So, combining those two factors, cross-type adoption is veryy uncommon at the moment. For example, its more likely the leader of a mudwing village will just decide to crunch some sandwing eggs they find, or leave orphaned hatched sandwings alone. If a mudwing is willing to take them on, they arent likely to get support and those kids arent likey to be accepted as a part of the village. It can happen, but it'll be a struggle.

Social ostracized childhood stuff aside, theres also some phycial struggles theyd deal with raising a kid with drastically different physiology. Icewings need to be careful about overheating if theyre down south, and conversely their non-icewing parent could die from being too cold. Rainwings also have heat requirements, they'd have trouble living anywhere that gets too cold. Rainwings and Mudwings are omnivores, so if the other tribes are raising hatchlings they'll have to provide vegetables and fruits too (something that could take a sec for a carnivore to understand. Why is my child so sickly you're getting the best dead animal I can provide :( ) Seawings are probably the hardest, they Need to be in water for a lot of their day, can't really fly or walk well (makes doing average labor in a terrestrial dragon community very hard), and can't talk very well even if trained.

Hivewings and silkwings basically have the same larva requirements and are more or less raised the same way in the Hive (separately, but still. Theyre both omnivores favoring plants, so they can be given the same yummy child slop, and even pupate at around the same time!). Leafwings bud off their parent tree and are very antisocial, they're likely to just run away from your well-meaning attempts to raise them (maybe occasionally returning, depending on the individual. Theyre carnivores, so a hivewing or silkwing trying to raise one would run into the opposite problem of a skywing trying to raise a rainwing. Whys my giant translucent mantis child so sickly, youre getting the best honey, fruit, and grain I can provide :( ).
