My first Richonne gifset, with help from tutorials & inspiration across the community.

At a SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations panel on December 14, 2024, at the Meryl Streep Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles, @ViolaDavis reframed the performance conversation around Sinners.

While the film is marketed as Michael B. Jordan playing dual roles, Davis argued the work is more precise than that:

he delivers three distinct performances.

• Elijah “Smoke” Moore — the older twin. Closed-off. Stoic. Grief held inward through posture and restraint.

• Elias “Stack” Moore — the younger twin. Charismatic. Business-minded. A man who smiles through his pain.

• Vampiric Stack — the transformation. Davis highlighted this as a third performance, praising the technique required to preserve Stack’s humanity even as he becomes a predator.

@MichaelBJordan shared that he worked with a dialect coach and wore different-sized shoes for each twin to subtly change his gait and physical center 👞 allowing him to switch identities on set without signaling the audience.

Davis also connected the film’s 1930s Mississippi setting to the historical sacrifices of Black ancestors, framing the story’s vampirism as both literal horror and generational metaphor.

The panel featured @WunmiMosaku and casting director @FrancineMaislercasting, discussing Ryan Coogler’s vision for blending horror with historical realism.

Jordan’s performance has since earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.
