Made a beetle hat for my friend's bug party π·οΈ
Spicebush swallowtail! + a little tour of the lepidopteran stairwell so far. That empty glass will be full of native leps when I can get my hands on some dry milkweed. There may or may not be a cecropia and a sweetfern underwing on the way ',:γ
I take a speed run style approach to painting these and the decrease in time for each is scaring my friends
What exactly do you use to get that finish on the 3d printed bugs??? It looks so unbelievably realistic!
Lots of patience with sanding!
I sand and prime it until there's no visible print lines, finishing with 600 grit sandpaper and a final coat of primer.
I painted the colour on mostly by spraying acrylics, and finished it with a couple coats of gloss lacquer :)
For the ladybird I printed the antennae clear and only used translucent colours so they would look still look a little see-through.
Thanks for asking! β€οΈπ

A few giant model insects at the Otago Museum - the use of ostrich feathers for the moth antennae is quite clever. Unfortunately the case didn't specify exactly which harvestman that is - it's a beautiful piece of work. And it's probably just as well Tiger Beetles aren't that big in real life or they'd be responsible for a LOT of human casualties.
I've always wondered how I'd do a model of a moth without losing the delicacy of the wings, this one looks amazing!

if we're showing off bug models! heres some from when i visited my fiancee in vienna, the natural history museum had (has?) a temp exhibit about creatures that live in the soil and all the environmental stuff around it, and there were some very good models too (plus some bonus slug sex that was in their normal bugs section)
now THAT is awesome. i love large scale insect models. so so cool, these are some really good ones
