Grimoire vs Book of Shadows: What's the Difference?
Recently, I did some research on the differences between a Grimoire and a Book of Shadows so that I could understand what each one was and decide which term would be suited for the type of magickal book I wanted to make.
Most of the information I gathered was from the YouTube channels of content creators that have an educational background in the occult, such as Dr. Angela Puca and Dr. Justin Sledge, as well as other practitioners.
What Is A Grimoire?
Historically, a Grimoire is a collection of occult knowledge, rituals, and spells that involved working with entities such as angels, demons, and deities. They were typically written in Latin and the contents were usually a mix of various Religious and Theological sources.
The books themselves were thought to be magical , as they were originally hand written and imbued with the authors energy and occult knowledge. It was also thought that the words held magical power and could be used to cast spells and make charms whether the reader understood Latin or not.
When the printing press entered the literary world, it was viewed by some as a great way to make Grimoires more accessible, while others thought that it robbed the books of their magical power.
Today, a Grimoire is still a collection of occult knowledge, rituals, and spells that have been vetted and curated to share within a group or the general public. Online Occult communities usually have a digital version, while some people make digital grimoire pages for easy printing. Many occult authors have published Grimoires available for purchase.
My Book of Shadows
What Is A Book of Shadows
The first Book of Shadows(BoS) was Gerald Gardners’, The Gardnerian Book of Shadows, and was meant to be a secret text only known to Coven members. Initiates had to manually copy the text for their personal use and education. However, it eventually was published for public consumption.
Today a BoS is generally used as a personal record of one’s occult/witchcraft practice and research, and a place to record one’s personal gnosis such as spells and their results, dreams, meditation and astral projection experiences, personal correspondences, and a ritual and spell planning/calendar.
Conclusion
To boil it down, a Grimoire is a collection of spells and rituals to be shared with the public, while a Book of Shadows is to be kept secret to one’s self or group/coven. Today, the line between the terms Grimoire and Book of Shadows is blurred as each practitioner/group decides what term best suits them.
