Threatening suicide is a classic abuse tactic used to frighten compassionate people into staying at an abuser’s side or otherwise capitulating to an abuser’s demands. I’ve seen it used on my friends and it’s terrifying knowing how frightened they are for a person who could be driving them to death themselves.

It’s hard. But try to remind yourself over and over and over that your abuser’s behavior is entirely their choice. You are not responsible for their behavior. They decide their own action. They are very very good at making you feel like their behavior is your fault, but that is not true.

The same way it’s abusive bullshit for someone to say “you made me hurt you” it’s also abusive bullshit for someone to say “you made me hurt them” or “you made me hurt myself.” Threatening violence to get you to comply, whether that violence is directed towards you, bystanders, or themselves, is fundamentally abusive.

You have every right to hang up/leave in those situations. The illusion is that your choice is [Stay OR They Die] but that isn’t a real choice, that’s an abusive magic trick. Your choice is [Stay OR Leave] and their choice is [Hurt Myself OR Take Care of Myself] and you are not responsible for their choices.

You are accountable for your own behavior, not theirs. No matter what your abuser does, no matter how convincingly they blame you, their violent actions are not your fault.

Don’t use these scare tactics - Chemicals aren’t inherently bad. Literally everything is made up chemicals. Trust me, your body knows what niacin is. It knows how to digest fructose and calcium sulfate. Even if you only consume the most basic and “real” foods that are pulled directly off the vine, you’re still ingesting a series of chemical compounds that you probably can’t pronounce. That’s okay.

I’m pretty sure you can pronounce “arsenic”, but that doesn’t change the fact that arsenic is highly toxic. On the other hand, you couldn’t pronounce “cycloadenosine monophosphate” or “nicotine-amide-dinucleotide-phosphate”, though both of them serve vital roles in human biochemistry and you would die if your body wouldn’t produce them.

He told people to pay their taxes. He declared “love your neighbor” to be one of the two commandments on which all laws hang. He commanded his followers to help the poor. He commanded them to help the sick and the needy. He spent time with social outcasts. He healed the servant of a high priest during his arrest rather than fighting back. He was put to death by the occupying government because he was a political radical.

Trump and his administration are xenophobic, misogynistic, racist, fear-mongering, warmongering, tax-dodging, anti-Semitic, anti-choice, anti-welfare, anti-equal pay, anti-LGBTQIA+, anti-immigration, support tax cuts for the rich, support Citizen’s United, want to keep refugees out of this country, want to limit our ability to speak against the government, plan to abolish the Affordable Care Act, and they wrap all of that up behind a banner of “Christian family values.” If you support them, you have no right to call yourself a follower of Christ.
