the thing about mothers in fiction is that a lot of fandoms seem to be under the impression that the worst thing a woman can possibly do is be a bad mother. like they can forgive deadbeat dads easily but the moment a woman is a bad or even mediocre mother she's the devil incarnate to them. and then you're like "i like her and i think she's interesting" and they immediately go "oh so you think it's okay to be a bad mother (which is the most evil thing a woman can be)". and don't even get me started on how they react to female characters who are bad stepmothers
Unironically I think this is why Medea by Euripides is so heavily misinterpreted as a character assassination on its protagonist or a misogynistic smear against women everywhere when the original text itself challenges the idea that Medea is a villain. A lot of modern (and even some ancient) people talking about the play or the character refer to Medea as an archetypal example of a horrible evil crazy mother because they fundamentally misunderstand the premise of the play and it’s because its protagonist isn’t the typical self-sacrificial suffer-in-silence martyr for her kids that people expect mothers to be. Medea is not called to be a doting mother, she is called to be an instrument of divine punishment for Jason’s crimes against her and her children and she fulfils the role that better suits her.
The play makes it clear that Medea loves her kids, that she wanted to see them grow up to be heroes and achieve greatness before Jason robbed their sons of that future with his abandonment. Everything she does is in response to the horrific circumstances JASON put them in. Jason expects Medea to capitulate because he’s holding their children over her head and a “typical” mother is supposed to drop everything for her children. But a trapped fox gnaws its leg off, and a starving sow eats her young, and Medea is explicitly not a typical Greek woman, she is the blood of gods and an instrument of their justice and she tells us who she is in her own monologue: Her identity aligns with and is every bit as inclined to greatness and savagery as the lauded, blood-soaked male heroes of epic tradition. And when she is forced to prove it, she does.
And she is implicitly justified by the narrative. She occupies a role in Greek tragedies traditionally reserved for the gods, and their conspicuous lack of intercession implies that their judgement is already being carried out by the semi-divine Medea.
The whole play is a reflection on the roles women are forced into and how thankless and dangerous it is to be at the mercy of men. Medea did everything right by her husband and was thrown to the wolves, if she had played the part of a “good” mother she and her sons would have suffered. It was Jason’s failure to fulfil the role of a good Greek man who takes care of his family that forces Medea to abandon the role of a good Greek woman if she wants to survive. But people miss this point because they can’t absorb Medea with any nuance past her choosing herself over her children, and so the whole work is reduced to “man isn’t it scary when women go crazy? So evil!!”
Like Medea not being punished by the gods for filicide is such a crucial part of the narrative both in the play and the myth in general.
Medea doesn't get punished by the gods. She gets assistance via a chariot pulled by dragons which adds to how she transforms.
And taking it a step further, I like to explore the idea that Medea didn't actually murder her children.
That's just the version recounted by Jason and accepted by the status quo around him.
Instead, his sons choose to be with Medea over him. They choose to embody the qualities of their mother as opposed to their father which would hurt more in a society that positions patralineal connections as valuable.
See now I don’t know about that last part. I feel like it softens Medea too much while also misunderstanding key points about the context of her decision. And my point was why is there a need to soften her? The premise of my argument is that her actions are shocking (and make no mistake, they are) not just because of the actions themselves, but because she is a woman and mother rather than a father.
Heracles and Agamemnon also kill their kids for various reasons, willingly or not. Achilles is also ruled by rage and vengeance. Odysseus also commits infanticide and lies and tricks people into destroying themselves. Why are these complicated men celebrated as heroes but Medea is an evil witch?
The Catalogue of Ships in the Iliad is, to a modern audiences, what classicists have called “boring as hell,” but I can’t help but think that if you were watching Homer recite it it would have been more like when comedians go, “anybody here tonight from Chicago?” and the Chicagoans in the back start cheering
Homer’s like, “and there were forty black ships from… LOCRIS” and the Locrians in the crowd start going absolutely nuts
grant us a Pope who doubts 🕊
I don’t know who will care about what I’m saying, but the situation here in Gaza is literally spiraling out of control in a terrifying way.
We are living in an area that makes up no more than 30% of the entire Gaza Strip, and this area has been reduced to rubble and tents. We are besieged by land, sea, and air. There is no real way out and nowhere we can escape to. There are cranes and massive sand embankments surrounding Gaza, and people are living under constant surveillance and fear. You cannot leave, and you cannot choose where you want to go. All you can do is wait.
Water stations have almost completely stopped operating because fuel and oil have run out. The tents have been torn apart and worn down by the extreme heat, and people are living inside them in conditions that are impossible to describe. Hospitals have been extensively destroyed, with medicines and medical supplies unavailable, and even basic diagnostic and treatment equipment has become extremely scarce. Almost everything is prohibited from entering Gaza, and even what is allowed in is subject to approval and restrictions.
The entire education system has collapsed. Schools have been destroyed, children have been deprived of their education .
The reality here is far worse than anything I can write. Words cannot convey the scale of what we are experiencing, and no single photograph can show what it is like to watch an entire city collapse before our eyes.
We are not living a normal life. We are simply trying to survive. Besieged from every direction, without a home, without safety, and without any clear way out.
Donate for a better future for us. Your donations make a difference.
Please help my friend Mahrah and her family to survive this genocide.
