I don't mean this in a dismissive "haha you've got daddy issues" way but I really am coming to suspect that most if not all people who view the opposite sex as like, fundamentally alien on a mental or emotional level really just do not have healthy family relationships. You see it with the weird Trad and Alpha Male guys who can't seem to conceive of women as fully-aware human beings instead of some sort of symbiotes who need men to guide them, you see it with the weird radfems who like to go on about men being incable of feeling real emotion and just being driven by instinct and needing to be ruled over like dogs. I just find it really difficult to imagine arriving at those worldviews if you ever had a mutually caring and respectful relationship with an opposite-sex parent or sibling.
iโve had radfems go off on me for talking about my relationship with my dad. things are more complicated now after i came out, but when i was a baby he stayed home with me and worked part time so my mom could work full time, he was never weird about my periods and didnโt use weird euphemisms (he would just say โare you cramping? do you need tylenol? need me to buy you some tampons?โ), taught me the basics of sex ed since my conservative school wasnโt going to do that, was very understanding and supportive for the most part when i would talk to him about personal problems (when i left a shitty relationship at the end of high school he was the first person i told and i cried on his shoulder for like half an hour), when his best friend/my godfather died he didnโt hide his tears.
there were many things i wish heโd done differently, but there were many things he did right, and so many people get legitimately angry when i try to talk about it. people have even accused me of โtrying to make excuses for shitty menโ for just talking about the fact that not all fathers are emotionless assholes who never see their families. it really solidified in my mind that some people donโt want things to change. they just want to stay angry with the way they are currently because anger is cathartic and much less effort than actual systemic change.
I have a couple popular posts on tumblr that are funny or heartwarming stories about my dad, and all of them get regular comments that boil down to, "men suck and he's probably really shitty behind the scenes."
And it's like. He's a human person, of course he's not perfect. But if your response to seeing someone tell a nice story about their dad is to immediately dissect all the ways the dad in question must secretly be awful, that's...that's a problem. That's not an appropriate reaction to someone telling a happy story about a parent.
this is so funny im losing my mind
Learning this was an intentional genocide changed me.
I know most of those following me know this, but just to make it super clear. An Gorta Mรณr (The Great Hunger/the Great Famine) was a deliberate genocide of the Irish people. There was enough food grown in Ireland to make sure everyone was alive and healthy and survived. Instead it was exported, sent to England and elsewhere for profit while men, women, and children starved in the streets. While the English landlords fucked off and evicted starving families who couldnโt afford rent. While babies were too weak to cry and died at the side of the road.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. And we owe so much thanks to the other oppressed peoples, in particular the Choctaw Nation and the Masai, who sent money and grain to us.
Let me repeat that. The Choctaw Nation who had just gone through the Trail of Tears sent us money to try save Irish lives. Itโs led to an understanding between Irish people and Native American tribes, most recently when we donated to the Navajo and Hopi fundraisers for COVID-19 relief, because while it may be a different tribe, Irish people will never forget those who helped us and weโll help back.
The entire population of the island is less than seven million people. Weโre still a million less on this island than pre famine. And itโs not that long ago. My grandmotherโs grandparents lived through it. Weโve told the stories, it literally changed the DNA of the country. We have a national fear of renting, because so many people were evicted. People joke about Irish people always offering loads of food, but itโs because thereโs that cultural memory of not being able to.
They tried to kill us, but they did not succeed. We will not let them take our lives, we will not let them take our language. We lost so much, but we will not lose it all.
This is why I get so angry when people say โit was the potato famine, it was because of monoculture/microbes.โ
Nope. The potatoes were the only thing Irish people were allowed to fucking eat, because as pointed out, the rest of the crops they were growing were for their landlords to ship to England. So when the one โworthlessโ crop they were allowed to eat rotted in the field, the English crown, empire, landlords, all shrugged and carried on. People starved to death lying next to productive fields.

Transcript: Yesterday my cousin said that my rooster wasn't a real rooster. He said he's a Walmart rooster. *chicken noises* Does this not look like a real rooster to you? *chicken makes a sound again* Sure, he's small, but he has feelings.
important context this person looks and sounds like theyโre gonna cry
Can we talk about how that was the perfect cross-cultural example? I was like "oh this sounds so pleasant, how is it-" then Pumped Up Kicks came on and i was like "oh. Oh yeah okay."
