Wanted to share some of what my own thought process looked like when developing ASL concepts to understand and discuss topics regarding bacteria. Maybe some of the signs will be a fit for you, or at least spark ideas for using a bacterial feature such as the peptidoglycan cell wall for an ASL sign.

ASL is seriously cool! and i donāt think it gets seen as aĀ ālanguageā in the langblr community v often. But how cool is it that three separate languages share the same written form (ALS, English, BSL)! i think thatās pretty dope
@languagenerdsā Agree with the first part of your msg, but want to clarify an important point regarding the last half of your post. Written English has nothing to do with ASL or BSL. It is incorrect to think of written English as a form of ASL or BSL, similarly, it would be a mistake to think of ASL or BSL as manual representations of the English language. Each is a separate, bonafide language. You cannot use English toĀ āwrite in ASLā (its linguistic parameters, grammar, syntax, etc.). The fact that many language users of ASL or BSL happen to write in English has to do with bilingualism and the simple shared geography of an English-speaking majority culture.
To summarize: ASLās relationship to English is not a linguistic relationship akin to written standard Chinese being the written representation for more than one spoken language/dialect (word choice = political distinction) or that of the Latin alphabet being used by more than one language.Ā

Navigating Through Negativity
More often than not, a negative comment says more about the person saying it than about the person it is being said to ā itās uncanny how people who are hurting tend to hurt people in ways that are highly specific to their own insecurities.
I avoid injury from negativity by using the following workout plan:

I agree with the original anon. Sure, ASL fulfill the requirement of a language. But to say that there's a culture for deaf people is kinda b.s, and to consider asl a world language is an insult to languages in general. I'm not gonna go to a country and start "speaking" asl. ASL is making lemon juice out of lemon, so claiming that deaf culture is a valid culture is such bull.

Here are a few things that you should ABSOLUTELY NOT INCLUDE (and not do to hard of hearing people in general).Ā
Characters responding to Clint asking them to repeat something withĀ āNever mindā orĀ āItās not importantāĀ
This is frustrating because it essentially cuts the hearing impaired person off from knowing A LOT OF INFORMATION, and is important never to do no matter how inane the comment was
Characters making statements likeĀ āWhat are you, deaf?ā in response to anyone not hearing something
First of all, this kind of joke is rude and not funny because among other things it implies that there is something inherently wrong with deafness
Secondly, these statements are essentially guilting the person who didnāt hear for not hearing something, which is RUDE AND NOT FUNNY
Having absolutely everyone switch to American Sign Language with no problem because they all know it already
This one just denies the sheer frustrating difficulty of the relative dearth of people who know ASL and fails to acknowledge the fact that it is a whole other language
Portraying Clint losing his hearing as the worst thing that could happen to anyone ever
Many hearing impaired people do not consider hearing loss a disability, because of the uniqueness of deaf cultureĀ
Even those who do consider it a disability can do pretty much everything with their lives that fully hearing people can do and therefore most certainly donāt consider their lives to be over once their hearing is damaged/gone
Characters mocking Clint for speaking too loudly
This is literally the equivalent of mocking a paraplegic person for not walking properly and is rude and awful and is not a thing that should ever be written without at least eight other characters giving the character who does it a serious side-eyeĀ
In short, please do a tiny bit of research (or just stop and think) when deciding how to bring Clintās hearing impairment into fan fiction. Ā Thank you!
