From "What is this weird book?" to "This might be my favorite in the series."
This used to be a fandom site and I dont know why I didnt place any of my thoughts of what I read in these books on here but lets do it now that im in the middle of book 4 and we'll see where it gets me.
This is definitely going to be all spoils so if you haven't read it or are just not interested, keep scrolling.
How it started: I was live streaming, somebody came in and told me I look like someone who would enjoy Dungeon Crawler Carl. I looked it up, bought book 1, and I was off to the races. It was a nerdy LitRPG book, my kind of thing. I went through it in a few weeks because I couldn't put it down.
I didnt know what I was expecting, people kept saying New Achievement and Rewards and all kinds of gamer stuff so I just thought it was going to be goofy and cheesy.
What I got was a reality TV death game, a video game raid dungeon, a conspiracy thriller, and somehow one of the funniest book series I've read in a long time.
Book 1: The "Wait...this is actually amazing?" Phase
Book 1 was me constantly trying to figure out what kind of story I was reading.
One chapter it's dark comedy.
The next chapter somebody is getting absolutely wrecked by dungeon mechanics.
Then suddenly I'm emotionally invested in a talking cat.
The thing that hooked me immediately was how much the dungeon felt like a video game mixed with a reality TV show. Every floor felt like a new season with new rules, new gimmicks, and new ways for the contestants to suffer for the entertainment of everyone watching.
Carl felt like the player character dropped into a game he never agreed to beta test.
Princess Donut felt like she was speed-running becoming one of the greatest fictional cats ever created.
By the end of Book 1 I was already thinking this series was amazing and I bought the second book while I was half way through the first book.
Book 2: The "Oh, the world is MUCH bigger than I thought" Phase
Book 2 was where I started realizing this wasn't just about surviving monsters.
The politics.
The corporations.
The game show structure.
The sponsors.
The audience.
Everything started feeling way more sinister.
The dungeon stopped feeling like a random death maze and started feeling like a machine.
A machine designed to entertain.
A machine designed to profit.
A machine designed to break people.
At the same time the friendships, alliances, and character moments got stronger.
This was the point where I started realizing I wasn't reading for the action anymore.
I was reading for the characters.
Book 3: The "This is my favorite book so far" Phase
For a while Book 3 was sitting comfortably at #1.
Everything felt bigger.
The stakes were bigger.
The reveals were bigger.
The emotional punches were bigger.
Every floor felt like a raid encounter where nobody had read the strategy guide beforehand.
The ending especially left me completely shaken.
Book 3 was the moment where I realized this series wasn't afraid to hurt both its characters and its readers.
I finished it feeling like I'd just survived a boss fight.
Then Book 4 Happened
And now we have a problem.
Because Book 4 may have stolen the crown.
Book 4: The "What in the actual hell is happening?" Phase
Book 4 has been the book where I've spent the most time theorizing.
Every chapter feels like there's another mystery hidden behind the mystery.
The dungeon keeps giving me answers while somehow creating five new questions.
The world-building has exploded.
The conspiracy side has exploded.
The character interactions have exploded.
And somehow the humor is still landing in the middle of all the chaos.
Chapters 15 & 16 Changed Everything
These chapters are the reason Book 4 is currently taking over my rankings.
Chapter 15 felt like a mystery novel.
Every conversation felt important.
Every clue felt like it mattered.
I kept waiting for the pieces to click together.
Then Chapter 16 arrived and completely changed the energy.
A WILD GOOSECHASE.
The kind of chapter where you're following one thing, then another thing, then another thing, and suddenly you're wondering how we ended up here.
It felt chaotic in the best possible way.
Those chapters reminded me why I love this series.
The story never sits still.
The second you think you've figured out the direction, Matt Dinniman grabs the steering wheel and drives through a wall.
Character Thoughts So Far
Carl: He continues to be one of my favorite protagonists because he reacts like an actual person. He's not some chosen one. He's not a master strategist who knows every answer. He's a guy trying to survive a situation that gets more insane every day. And somehow he keeps going.
Princess Donut: Every book somehow makes Donut better. Every time I think I've seen everything she has to offer, she does something else that reminds me why she's one of the best characters in the series. She's hilarious. She's dramatic. She's perfect. PROTECT HER AT ALL COST!
Mordecai: The more I learn about Mordecai, the more interested I become. Every new piece of information makes me feel like there's an even bigger story hiding underneath the surface.
Current Ranking
As of right now:
๐ฅ Book 4 (currently in progress and threatening to become the permanent champion)
๐ฅ Book 3
๐ฅ Book 1
๐ Book 2
The crazy thing about this series is that every book feels like it levels up from the previous one.
Chapters 15 & 16: The Mystery and the Wild Goose Chase
Book 4 has jumped to the top of my rankings because of these chapters. Not because they had the biggest fight or the funniest joke or the craziest dungeon mechanic.
These chapters made me feel like I wasn't just reading anymore, I was investigating.
Chapter 15: Everybody Knows Something
This chapter felt like being dropped into the middle of a mystery where everyone else already has half the clues.
Every conversation felt important.
Every piece of information felt like it was pointing somewhere.
And every time I thought I understood where the story was heading, another detail would show up that made me question everything again.
The entire chapter had this feeling of "Get to the point, what is everyone hiding?"
Not in a bad way but more in I can't-stop-turning-pages way.
Like watching a detective show where all the suspects keep talking around the answer instead of actually giving it.
The deeper Book 4 goes, the more I'm realizing the dungeon isn't just a giant monster-filled game.
There's history, politics, agendas, and stuff happening behind the scenes that makes the actual dungeon runs feel like only half the story.
And Chapter 15 was packed with that energy.
Every answer seemed to create three new questions.
Chapter 16: A Wild Goose Chase
I don't even know how else to describe this chapter other than A. Wild. Goose. Chase!!!
The best kind too. The kind where you're chasing one thing. Then suddenly you're chasing something else. Then somebody points at another thing. Then the situation changes again. Then somehow we're somewhere completely different than where we started.
The entire chapter felt like trying to follow a side quest that somehow turns into the main quest, then becomes a raid encounter, then turns into another side quest before anyone can explain what's happening.
As a gamer, it reminded me of those RPG missions where the objective marker keeps moving.
You think you're finally about to arrive.
Then the game updates:
Objective Updated.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Why These Chapters Worked For Me
What I loved most is how different they felt from each other.
Chapter 15 was all tension.
Questions.
Clues.
Trying to understand.
Chapter 16 was momentum.
Chaos.
Movement.
Trying to keep up.
Together they felt like the perfect one-two punch.
One chapter makes you think.
The next chapter barely gives you time to think.
One thing I've noticed while reading this series is that the dungeon feels more and more like reality television every book.
Chapter 15 felt like the episode where producers are quietly revealing secrets in confessionals.
Chapter 16 felt like the episode where everybody starts running around because those secrets finally start causing problems.
As someone who watches competition shows, that's one of my favorite structures.
The setup.
The tension.
The reveal.
The fallout.
And these chapters absolutely nailed that feeling.
