Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you canāt go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.

Last week, I learned that the English language has more euphemisms for death than any other language. I learned that the ancient Greeks had no word for the colour blue and that the Hawain alphabet has only twelve letters. I spent last week hollowing out a little place in my heart and filling it with worry. What does that say about us? Do we really go out of our way to avoid death like that? How did the Greeks describe the sea? Are twelve letters really enough? Does every language have a word for love? Every language should have a word for love. And compassion. And gentleness. And figs and snow and that soft sensitive part on the inside of oneās arm. We should have words for everything so that we donāt feel alone. We need very very very specific words for all of the different kinds of sad and even more specific words for the kinds of happy. What if we were able to talk about everything? I want to tell you how I feel and I want to be precise. Sometimes āgoodā just isnāt enough and few understand what I mean when I say that I feel ālike lightning.ā

The taste of my own fingers in my mouth sitting on the tile floor in the bathroom all dirty teeshirt and unwashed hair all no pants, shower running until itās cold I love you like the bitterness of iron like the smell of something leaking under the sink miss the feeling of you inside like i was so much light, so much bursting at the seams How is wanting you dirty? If you walk away now, well the dust will settle, everything rusts

I am thinking about the crescent scar on the roof of his mouth that he got when he fell with a straw between his teeth and how it felt to run my tongue over it. How it felt to taste the moon. If love is anything tangible, it is his mouth, his mouth, his holy god damned mouth. He says my name and the whole sky is talking.

The point of cursive writing
I was thinking about that Hank said in his last video that cursive writing is useless
I taught a couple of beginner English class to refugees and asylum seekers, who can write Arabic but not our alphabet. So they have the ability to do precise letters and fine motor skills but arenāt familiar with our letters.Ā
So I teach them how to make a letter. And they copy the letter and it looks the same, but they write it differently. For example, they start writing theĀ āVā on the right and go left. Or for anĀ āeā they make aĀ ācā and then put a line in. And while thatās fine and gets you to your goal, youāre never going to be able to write fast*. Cursive writing forces you to write the letters in a practical way because you *have* to write from left to right, and in as smooth a move as possible. It forces you to write the individual letters with a kind of logicalĀ āflowā from one letter to the other.Ā
So I think cursive writing is beneficial in learning to write, even if you donāt write cursive ever again.Ā
*of course, writing fast isnāt an essential skill, youāll manage perfectly fine if each letter takes a second. But it is practical to be able to quickly note something down, in my opinion.Ā
Interesting perspective I had never considered re Hankās most recent video. Anyone else think any of Hankās rants were wrong?
