Iâve been seeing lots of dudes lately talking about how they have friends with really conservative views and being like âyou know what, i donât agree with him politically but heâs a great guy! weâre great friends! he can vote how he wants, we can still get beers together!â
and i just. i feel like thatâs such aâŚ. privileged way to exist?
I dunno man. But if youâre actively conservative i literally donât feel safe around you so. Like. itâs not just ideology! Votes donât go into the void! If some dude shits on women and survivors and LGBT+ people then three strikes ur out! I feel like Iâm gonna die! see you never! bye!
So I honestly canât imagine feeling like you can put aside all these core beliefs and just hang with whoever. Like, if you can look at people like that and feel totally safe and defend how âgreatâ they are⌠Iâm wary, thatâs all.
Like, yeah, Iâve known plenty of conservative people who are nice to me. But Iâm really, deeply uncomfortable with people who are only being nice to me because I fit their arbitrary mental checklist for who deserves kindness. I donât want your kindness if it would cancel out the moment you learned anything about me. Fuck off.
I just feel like âagree to disagree and get along anywayâ is only an accessible viewpoint to those who donât have very much at risk. It reminds me of people who stay friends with abusers because they âdonât know the whole storyâ and âmaybe everythingâs okayâ. Like, there is no neutral when youâre talking about human rights. There just isnât. I donât care if you smile at me and want to discuss a shared interest in marketing psychology and equine sports. If you hate fundamental aspects of who I am, Iâm not going to get along with you, and Iâm not going to trust the people who do. Simple.
