Since I have ~*~66 whole followers~*~ followers on this blog, I’d like to let you now that I’ve moved to a new Tumblr account, because I was uncomfortable with how many people from my real life knew about this one. Unlike this blog’s focus on articles and longform text and avoidance of interaction, my new Tumblr is more of a general blog, still heavily focusing on the political, but with more commentary. President Bush and other Western politicians have taken great pains to make it clear that the war in which we are engaged is a war against terrorism—not a war against Arabs, or, more generally, against Muslims, who are urged to join us in this struggle against our common enemy. Osama bin Laden’s message is the opposite. For bin Laden and those who follow him, this is a religious war, a war for Islam and against infidels, and therefore, inevitably, against the United States, the greatest power in the world of the infidels.

I encourage everyone to read this wonderfully informative, recently-unlocked piece from the New Yorker, written shortly after 9/11, about the origins of the Islamic conflict with the West.

However, given the fact that seeming universals of language are mere statistical tendencies and given a variety of findings in the domains of language acquisition and change (cf. e.g. Croft 2001; Tomasello 2003), it has become increasingly clear that the assumption of a domain-specific language faculty is highly questionable. In addition, a more pessimistic stance on the age-old “nature” vs. “nurture” question would hold that it simply cannot be answered because “nurture” can never be eliminated as a confounding factor. However, that is all the more reason to do away with theoretical preconceptions and non-falsifiable assumptions such as Universal Grammar. Instead, we should try to find answers to the key question what (a) language actually is in a bottom-up, data-driven way.

In his 1790 Critique of Judgment, Kant famously predicted that there would never be a “Newton for a blade of grass.” Biology, he thought, would never be unified and reduced down to a handful of mechanical laws, as in the case of physics. This, he argued, is because we cannot expunge teleology (goal-directedness) from living systems. The question “what is it for?” applies to living structures in a way that has no corollary in physics.

Scientists have found that memories may be passed down through generations in our DNA

New research from Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta, has shown that it is possible for some information to be inherited biologically through chemical changes that occur in DNA. During the tests they learned that that mice can pass on learned information about traumatic or stressful experiences – in this case a fear of the smell of cherry blossom – to subsequent generations.

According to the Telegraph, Dr Brian Dias, from the department of psychiatry at Emory University, said: ”From a translational perspective, our results allow us to appreciate how the experiences of a parent, before even conceiving offspring, markedly influence both structure and function in the nervous system of subsequent generations.

The minimum wage is just another weapon in the arsenal of the misguided progressive trying to “help” the poor. People whose productive value is less than the minimum wage are de facto unemployable. They are denied the opportunity to gain experience and skills, and their exclusion from the job market is a net loss to society.

Geel also shows us community’s vital role in humans’ mental health. Geel’s population is not huge, and its landscape is largely rural. This simplicity and closeness—to the land and to people—seems to have healing powers for the mentally ill. Even without medication, psychiatrists, and specialized care, “boarders” have flourished in Geel for hundreds of years. Perhaps what we really need, more than drugs or doctors, is human nourishment.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, the chairwoman of the National Governors Association, told TheBlaze that a state-driven constitutional convention “certainly is one way” governors are looking at to reigning in the federal government.

Fallin and five other governors on the NGA executive committee were at the White House Tuesday for a meeting with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.

Last month about 100 state legislators from 32 states gathered at Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington, to promote a constitutional convention as a means of controlling the power of the federal government. Meanwhile, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence recently signed legislation supporting a convention, while Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal supports a convention to achieve a balanced federal budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

The Great Healthcare CON

Wacky-nomics, cronyism, and Certificates of Need

The United States is in a desperate struggle to control healthcare costs and improve access. Rather than pinning our hopes on grand plans to overhaul the system, we should first look at where we can make changes on the margin that would move us in the right direction. Abolishing CON laws—a barrier to entry that drives up price, restricts access, and is maintained by cronyism—would be a great place to start.
