embarrassment has good bones
When everything is embarrassing, thatâs a sign that your passion is waking up, and it wants more. Your desire is a tender sprout that wants more water, more sunshine. It wants you to give up on SEEMING happy and in control and to start FEELING joy instead, even when it feels a little too big, even when it makes you cry, even when it forces you to question where you are and why.
Passion and desire and shame and sadness donât signal that you have to change everything immediately, though. These are sensations that donât require solutions. Your primary job, in the face of renewed lust for life, is to tolerate the shame of joy.
Because embarrassment is sometimes just a sign that youâve never lived out in the open before, youâve never cared more about a feeling than you care about how youâre coming across, youâve never prioritized happiness over control.
This is why itâs good to take risks that might embarrass you regularly. Because every time you dare to embarrass yourself for the sake of who you are, youâre teaching your body to prioritize joy. Youâre teaching yourself to let go of seeming better than the things you love. Youâre showing yourself how to feel where you are â to soak in the cool fall air, to breathe in the moon, to love every lopsided moment of your glorious, flawed life.
Shame is a Side Effect of Desire, Heather Havrilesky
I Worried, Mary Oliver
If the trash pickup people stop doing their job for two weeks you'd be throwing a fucking tantrum. Same for the janitors who keep your office spaces and bathrooms clean. (And that's before the various illnesses start to spread all over your city from the build up of pathogens.)
The people responsible keeping our spaces clean (and thus, mostly disease-free) should both be paid more AND thanked more.
Garbage service is one of the ten deadliest jobs in the United States.
And police work isn't even on that list.
It should be self evident that garbage collection needs to pay more because it's nasty as hell, not to mention tough on the body. Ask yourself how much money you would want to pick up garbage. A lot, right? I know I don't even have the physical endurance to wake up at ass o'clock in the morning and go sling around garbage bags all day, much less the intestinal fortitude to deal with the smells and such.
Garbage collection does pay more than other jobs not requiring certifications in many places, for just this reason, but unfortunately that principle hasn't been extended to other physically taxing jobs with nasty aspects. Anyone doing any type of cleaning work should be paid a ton of money and they generally aren't. If you've ever found a public toilet in an unusable state you know what I mean. Even people who enjoy cleaning are having a bad time with that and they should be compensated accordingly.

as much as i get the sentiment behind "make more bad art" there's gotta be a better way of communicating "you don't have to be technically proficient or hold yourself to a specific standard of practice" that doesn't sound as backhanded lol
you can't just leave this in the tags đ
not even kidding be SO earnest. Be so honest and forthcoming about your life, your feelings in the pursuit of connection with others, and know being as earnest as possible in your experience is what quells loneliness in those who feel the same way as you do. Is what helps us feel seen. And builds community and resolve within the fact it doesn't have to feel so lonely and insurmountable. we need community and connection. You really are not as alone as you think, we're all scared. we need to hold each others hands

Big Techâs Anti-Labor Playbook Has Come for Wikipedia

TLDR: In ten days last month, the Wikimedia Foundation fired the longtime lead developer of MediaWiki and disbanded the team whose entire job was to listen to volunteers. Most of the people they fired were union organizers. Wikipediaâs editors are now threatening to strike in solidarity. The Foundation is sitting on $296 million in reserves and a freshly profitable AI revenue stream. This is a confrontation with global implications.
It has been suggested elsewhere that if you are a Wiki Foundation donor, it would be a good idea to email and explain that this kind of behaviour will lead to you withholding future donations.
does anyone have a good starting template to email to the wiki foundation as a (potentially former) donor?
I went with:
> Hello! I have donated, what I can and when I can over the years, despite being on an extremely limited income. It saddens me greatly to see that Brooke Vibber and the members of the Community Tech team were let go. I know that the public stance is that the Wikimedia leadership supports unionization attempts, but this action seems to prove that those are hollow, meaningless publicity statements that are not backed by actions or policy. I will be withholding future donations until I feel that Wikimedia has shown that they support unionization. I hope employees manage to unionize soon - and that nobody else's position is questionably terminated. In the modern era of AI disinformation, actual humans willing to put in the work - and coordinate and assist the many, many more who do it FOR FREE - are a precious resource that should not be so easily thrown away.
and got back a form letter:
Thank you for your email and for your support of the Wikimedia Foundation and free knowledge.
Thank you also for sharing your concerns. I am happy to provide you with more context and information about the recent events.
The decision to disband the Community Tech team is not in any way connected to recent discussions about unionizing, nor have we terminated any staff for their participation in those discussions. The Foundation respects the right of staff to unionize if they vote to do so.
Earlier this month, the Wikimedia Foundation restructured the way the organization supports the Community Wishlist initiative, a forum for the volunteer editors behind Wikimedia projects to suggest and collaborate on improvements to our product and technology.
The decision to restructure followed internal assessments dating back to September 2025 on ways to make our Community Wishlist work more effective and to improve our support for volunteer editors. We learned from these assessments that it is rarely possible to fulfill community wishes through a single team due to the vast breadth of the software we support and the number of channels through which we receive wishes. The restructuring shifts the management of the Community Wishlist from a single, sometimes siloed team (formerly known as the Community Tech team) to the full Product and Technology Department â ensuring that community wishes can be acted on by teams who are specialists in many different areas.
As part of this restructuring, the Community Tech team was disbanded, and six roles were impacted. The Foundation has been committed to supporting the affected team members during this transition in various ways. The team members are currently still working at the Foundation and are receiving internal support to identify and apply for open roles at the organization.
Regarding Brooke Vibberâs departure, as a general practice, and out of respect for individual privacy, the Foundation does not share details about personnel matters. This applies consistently in all cases. We recognize that this can be frustrating, but maintaining this standard is important for everyone. However, we do want to reiterate that the Wikimedia Foundation does not take employment actions in response to union activity. We respect employeesâ rights to organize and engage in protected activities.
You may also wish to read our CEO Bernadette Meehanâs update to the community here.
I hope that information assuages some of your concerns. Please donât hesitate to get back in touch if I can be of any further assistance, and thank you again for your support.
sincerely,

If you EVER think Anthony Head is anything less than an angel then youâd best remember that I have always been a huge fan of his and weâve always had a little contact over the years and he heard Iâd come out as Trans and was having a hard time and that I was kind of sad that the photos I had from conventions with him were of me with long hair and no binder and they were all signed to âSarahâ and so he invited me to spend the day with him at his farm and he picked me up from the station and we just hung out and had lunch and he insisted on paying and took loads of photos and had them printed on photo paper the same day so he could sign them to Jay, along with other photos of him as Giles and Uther and he literally spent five hours chatting with me and got all of the pronoun stuff right every time and then he dropped me off at the station, gave me a final massive hug, waved me through the ticket barrier and insisted I message him when I got home so he knew I got back safe. Feel like now is a good time to remind people of this.
From the Nashville Zooâs fb page! Hereâs the petition, please please please take a moment to add your name (even if youâre not from Nashville!). If you are from Tennessee, contact your representatives and make it clear that the people do not want this data center. This is an AZA accredited zoo which is home to several species of critically endangered animals, we NEED to protect it. Make your voice heard!

really losing my patience for any 'feminist' statement to the tune of 'we need feminism because women fill a fundamentally different and necessary role than men and will be better at doing x y or z'. like actually i think we need feminism because it is an unbearable death of the spirit by inches to exist in a world where you are not seen as a fully realized human being because of a single cultural determination, and because a world that enshrines such things creates systems that are fundamentally sick to the core
