𝑩𝑨𝑫 𝑳𝒀𝑹𝑬 .

☀️  𝐀𝐁𝐎𝐔𝐓   ☀️   𝐖𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒  ☀️   𝐏𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐓  ☀️

         ❝   this  was  a  good  idea.   ❞   using  the  slightly - damp  napkin  from  beneath  his  glass,   he  dabs  at  the  chocolate  milk  mustache  that  had  taken  up  residency  on  his  upper  lip.   the  only  thing  more  sad  than  being  at  a  bar  in  the  middle  of  the  day  was  being  at  a  bar  in  the  middle  of  the  day  on  valentine’s  day,   but  it  was  just  about  the  only  place  in  the  village  not  teeming  with  couples  on  lunch  dates.   ambrose  had  a  feeling  fe  had  chosen  polaris  for  that  very  reason   —   just  like  he’d  ordered  the  chocolate  milk  from  the  bartender  for  him,   knowing  he’d  be  too  embarrassed  to  do  it  himself.   ❝   seriously,   thanks  for  getting  me  off  campus  today.   i  know  being  single  on  valentine’s  day  isn’t  the  end  of  the  world,   but  it  still  kinda  sucks  when  you  think  about   .  .  .   last  year.   ❞   a  slight  frown  tugs  at  his  lips  as  he  decapitates  another  chicken  finger  and  dunks  it  in  honey  mustard,   swirling  it  around  for  good  measure.   ❝   i’m  just  surprised  you  didn’t  have  plans.   ❞

          ❝    all  good,   man   —   just  passin’  through.   ❞   he  must’ve  uttered  the  same  words  a  dozen  times  before,   yet  every  single  visit  has  him  walking  out  with  an  armful  of  records  and  a  much  lighter  wallet.   as  he  wades  his  way  through  the  labyrinth  of  vinyl,   doggie  bag  swinging  at  his  side,   several  pieces  already  catch  his  eye,    but  he  wills  himself  to  stay  strong   —   at  least  until  he’s  completed  his  mission.   ❝   you  hungry ?   i  finally  hit  ten  stamps  on  my  kabob  kard,   and  since  i  was  in  the  neighborhood,   i  thought  i’d  bring  my  little  brother  some  lunch.    ❞   plunking  the  bag  on  the  counter,   he  moves  to  perch  on  an  empty  crate  when  the  album  in  levi’s  hand  grabs  his  attention.   ❝    whoa,   is  that  an  og  careless  whisper ?    ❞

          like  a  magician  pulling  tricks  from  his  hat,   ambrose  dives  inside  his  gym  bag  and  begins  unloading  its  contents,   declaring  each  item  as  it  hits  the  table.   ❝   swiss  rolls.   swiss  cheese.   ❞   he  twists  the  lid  off  his  thermos  and  fills  it  with  cocoa  before  (   gently !   )   nudging  it  toward  her.   ❝   swiss  miss.   i’m  a  july  baby   ---   camp  season   ---   and  i  know  how  much  it  sucks  being  away  from  home  on  your  birthday.   so  i  thought   .  .  .    ❞   ambrose  trails  off,   swagger  wiped  away  like  windex  on  a  bathroom  mirror,   leaving  him  completely  exposed.   this  was  stupid.   no,   this  was  beyond  stupid.   a  mini - mart  haul ?   these  weren’t  even  swiss  rolls   ---   they  only  had  ho-hos !   swallowing  his  pride  and  praying  to  gaia  she’d  find  his  gift  more  charming  than  pathetic,   he  shoves  another  grin  to  the  forefront.   ❝   why  not  bring  a  little  home  to  you ?   at  least,   with  whatever  i  could  scrounge  up  at  ok.   happy  birthday,   by  the  way.   did  i  forget  to  say  that ?   ❞

          ❝   a  total   ---   huh ?   ❞   a  single,   confused  line  forms  between  his  furrowed  brows  as  he  wracks  his  brain  for  clarity.   it  takes  him  a  while  to  find  it,   what  with  her  playing  still  thrumming  between  his  ears,   but  he  gets  there  eventually.   realization  dawns  upon  his  features,   followed  by  pleasant  surprise.   ❝   you  mean  tchaikovsky.   wow !   i  didn’t  know  you  were  a  romantics  fan.   ❞   and  while  he  could  chat  about  music  all  day,   he  knows  he  can  only  put  off  his  review  for  so  long.   at  least  he  bought  himself  the  time  to  choose  his  words  carefully.   ❝   getting  better  every  time.   little  shaky  there  towards  the  end,   but  you  have  heart.   that’s  the  most  important  thing.   ❞

          lake  cleito  was  straight  up  utopian  this  time  of  day,   the  watering  hole  awash  with  gold  as  the  sun  began  its  slow  descent  beneath  the  horizon.   elbow  crooked  behind  his  head,   ambrose  squints  up  at  the  pink - streaked  sky  and  has  to  bite  back  a  smile,   reminded  of  the  time  a  singular  red  sock  had  snuck  its  way  into  the  wash,   turning  his  collection  of  white  t - shirts  a  similar  hue.   below  him,   shiloh  finds  his  gaze  and  his  heart  gives  a  startled  leap   ---   as  if  he’d  somehow  forgotten  she  was  there.   ❝   guess  you  owe  me  a  smoothie.   ❞   he  offers  a  tight  grin  as  she  settles  back  into  place,   fighting  to  ignore  the  way  her  blonde  strands  gobbled  up  the  sunlight  and  fanned  out  over  his  chest.   ❝   you  were  right,   though.   this  is  way  better  than  spending  sunday  in  the  weight  room  with  a  bunch  of  sweaty  dudes   ---   glad  i  let  you  talk  me  into  it.   ❞   not  that  he’d  needed  much  convincing.

          so  many  questions  he’d  never  get  answers  to,   permanently  hovering  on  the  tip  of  his  tongue.   only  once  he  physically  could  not  stare  at  his  plate  any  longer,   when  his  vision  blurred  the  strands  of  spaghetti  into  one  saucy  clump,   does  he  dare  to  find  her  gaze.   it  was  the  first  time  he’d  truly  allowed  himself  to  see  her  since  the  break - up.   she  looked   .  .  .   sad.   beautiful,   but  sad.   ❝   i  don’t  hate  you,   imogen.   ❞   it’d  be  easier  if  he  did,   but  how  could  you  hate  someone  you’d  spent  so  long  loving ?   ❝   and  i  do  mean  it.   not  talking  to  you  every  day   ---   i  keep  waiting  for  it  to  get  easier,   but  it  never  does.   ❞

          the  gate  gives  an  unceremonious  creak  as  he  pushes  through,   announcing  his  arrival  to  all  within  earshot.   it’s  not  uncommon  to  find  eden  already  out  on  the  track  when  he  rolls  up  to  practice.   while  her  devotion  to  excellence  far  usurped  his  own,   ambrose  liked  to  think  he  brought  something  to  the  table  besides  agreeable  nods  and  tried - and - true  optimism.   then  again,   he’d  been  wounded  by  wishful  thinking  before.   ❝   hey  yourself,   captain.   lookin’  good  out  there.   ❞   slinging  his  gym  bag  over  a  post,   he  quickly  launches  into  stretching,   glad  to  have  a  chance  to  catch  up  before  their  teammates  start  trickling  in.   ❝   c’mon,   it’s  pizza.   you  really  have  to  ask  what  i  think ?   ❞   grinning,   he  pulls  his  shoulder  taut  across  his  chest,   satisfied  with  the  way  his  muscles  ache  from  the  day  before.   ❝   there’s  actually  something  i  wanted  to  talk  to  you  about  before  next  week’s  meet.   ❞

ambrose: ha ... yea. it wouldn't have been my pick. not by a long shot. but the laws of birthday kinda overruled my free will in this scenario

ambrose: [UNSENT] but hey at least it got u talking to me

ambrose: it was a b-day thing for alex. she wouldn't take no for an answer 😔

    ❝   can  i  get  another  dare ?   like  .  .  .   literally  anything  else ?   i  know  it’s  your  b - day  and  all,   but  i  feel  i  should  get  veto  power  on  anything  involving  my  ex.   ❞   even  as  the  words  leave  his  lips,   ambrose  knows  resistance  is  useless.   he  couldn’t  in  good  conscious  say  no  to  alex  on  her  birthday   ---   even  if  her  chosen  dare  put  a  fresh,   musical  twist  on  cruel  and  unusual  punishment.   without  waiting  for  her  response,   he  heaves  a  full - body  sigh  before  jogging  into  the  middle  of  the  quad.   ❝   uh   ---   this  is  for  immy.   imogen.   ❞   thank  gods  she  was  in  class  right  now   ---   though  he  wasn’t  naïve  enough  to  think  that  in  the  age  of  insta - stories,   this  wouldn’t  somehow  get  back  to  her.   as  the  music  kicks  on,   he  flashes  an  awkward  thumbs  up  in  alex’s  direction  and  begins  a  clumsy,   side  to  side  shuffle.   ❝   young  man,   there’s  no  need  to  feel  down   .  .  .   ❞

     ❝   where  did  you  hear  that ?   is  this  because  of  the  spinach  thing ?   ‘cause  i’m  sure  she  was  just  trying  to  help  me  out.   ❞

      ❝   a  lot,   most  of  the  time.   but  some  days   ---  well,   you’d  be  surprised.   honestly,   though,   i  can’t  remember  the  last  time  i  was  mad  at  another  person.   frustrated,   sure,   but  angry ?   it’s  mostly   .  .  .   situations.   or  myself.   i  get  really  pissed  at  myself  sometimes.   ❞

       ❝   i  feel  like  there’s  gotta  be  other  ways  around  being  mean,   but  i  guess  if  i  had  no  other  choice ?   i’d  feel  really  bad  about  it  either  way.   i  think  i’d  rather  embarrass  myself  to  cover  for  them.   ❞

        ❝   i  think  she’s  great !   really  talented.   only  thing  is,   i  keep  catching  her  peering  over  at  me  during  band  practice,   like  i  have  spinach  in  my  teeth  or  something   ---   which  is  impossible,   ‘cause  i  only  eat  spinach  when  it’s  blended  up  in  a  smoothie.   oh  well   .  .  .  probably  just  an  iris  thing.   ❞

         ❝   that  seems  like   .  .  .   not  a  great  idea.   i’m  pretty  lucky  to  have  great  relationships  with  all  of  my  brothers  and  sisters,   and  i’d  like  to  keep  it  that  way.   besides,   i  don’t  like  to  play  favorites.   but  i  will  give  a  special  shoutout  to  the  apollo  alum  who  left  a  whole  stash  of  textbooks  and  sheet  music  under  the  floorboards  in  my  room !   must’ve  saved  me,   like,   hundreds  of  euros.   hm   ---   maybe  they’re  my  favorite  sibling.   ❞
