Truth to be told, you barely even remember your childhood. Probably because you and your family moved a lot back then, you once lived in Laguna, then moved to Batangas, and then to Pampanga; which, of course, you know how to speak the dialect. The list goes on and on until you somehow end up at Manila, the capital of the Philippines. It wasnât what you expected; it was loud, dirty, and polluted, but somehow, you were happy.
âWhy happy? Because youâre finally away from those mean kids who used to bully you back in the province, and that one particular girl whom you like to call Mutya. She wasnât exactly the meanest, but wasnât the friendliest either. You thought that at first, but it was the biggest lie you later soon realized. But what can a six-year-old do? You were young and stupid. But the past is the past.
âThereâs one place you remember clearly, though, Manila. It was scary when you first heard of it, sitting in the back of the car with your older brother, who seemed to hate the thought of moving more than anything in his life. When you asked why, he just screamed.
âYour mom said itâs just him being a teenager and that itâll pass, but it never did. The ride was slow and exhausting, with the speaker blasting some old Filipino classics while your mom slept and your brother playing on his PSP, muttering curses under his breath, which your dad heard but just sighed.
âYou sat there quietly, hugging the teddy bear close to your chest like it was the most precious thing in the world to you. Watching as the city slowly welcomed you into its arms.
âThe buildings grew taller the deeper you went, stretching high into the sky like giants youâd only ever seen on television. The road became busier, cars crowding every lane, horns echoing after one another as if the whole place spoke in its noise. Jeepneys painted in bright colors raced past, their metal sides rattling as they swerved between lanes like they owned the road.
You heard your dad mumble, âThese drivers never change, always racing through traffic like it's a competition,â shaking his head but keeping his eyes fixed on the road.
A jeepney suddenly cut in front of your car, its brake lights flashing red. Your mom stirred in her sleep for a moment before settling back down. Your brother didnât even look up from his PSP, just pressed the buttons harder and muttered another quiet curse when his character lost.
Outside, the city kept rushing forward â pedestrians weaving through cars, vendors stepping back from the curb, motorcycles squeezing into spaces that didnât look big enough to fit a bicycle. Everything felt fast, impatient, loud.
You tightened your grip on your teddy bear. Back home, the loudest thing at this hour wouldâve been the wind brushing through the trees. But here, in Manila, even the silence seemed noisy.
Then you dozed off, you donât even remember when you got to your new home, all you remember is a little girl waving at you as your dad carried you inside your new home. Little did you know that the girl would make you the happiest kid in the entire world.
Your alarm blared into the quiet morning, dragging you out of another dream about that faceless girl. It was always the sameâblurred features, familiar presence, a feeling you could never quite explain.
You opened your eyes slowly, still heavy with sleep, and turned your head toward the clock. 6:30 AM. A soft groan left your lips. Right. You werenât a kid anymore. You were now an Architecture student at the University of San Carlos, and 7 AM classes did not wait for anyoneâs nostalgia.
You forced yourself up, moving through your morning routine half-awake. A quick wash, hair tied back in a hurry, uniform slightly wrinkled because you didnât bother ironing it properly last night. You grabbed a piece of bread from the table before slipping your shoes on and rushing out the door. The fresh Cebu morning air wrapped around you gently cool, humid, and alive.
As you walked, you took small bites of your bread, passing rows of market stalls already buzzing with activity. Vendors arranged vegetables in neat piles, jeepneys revved their engines, and tricycles waited for early passengers. You couldnât help but think how strange it wasâin other countries, people might still be asleep at this hour.
But not in the Philippines. Here, mornings began before the sun fully decided to rise.
When you finally looked up, the towering campus building stood in front of you, intimidating as ever. The glass windows reflected the soft morning light, reminding you just how long the day ahead would be. You let out a tired sigh. Youâd already done enough cardio just getting here.
Entering the studio already feeling drained, you slipped into your usual seat by the window. Your sketchbook was open, lines half-drawn from the night before, graphite smudged near the edges where your hand had rested too long. You told yourself youâd finish the perspective before lunch â before your brain decided to give up on you again.
The door swung open. Your professor walked in wearing an unusually bright smile. âSettle down, everyone.â
Chairs scraped against the floor as the class straightened up. A few people exchanged curious looks. It was too early for that kind of grin. He placed his folder on the table and clasped his hands together. âWell, young architects,â he began, scanning the room dramatically, âyour time has come to shine.â
âIâm very pleased to inform you that selected Architecture students of the University of San Carlos will be conducting a major project study in Quezon City, Manila.â
For a second, the room was silent.
âManila?!â âSir, like⌠Metro Manila?â
âWhen will we leave?â
âTomorrow morning,â your professor answered.
âFor real?â
âThat fast?â
Gasps and whispers erupted around you.
Manila. For some of your classmates, it had always been a distant placeâsomething you saw in movies, in competitions, in opportunities that felt just slightly out of reach. Most of you had grown up in Cebu, built your routines here, and imagined your futures here.
And now, suddenlyââYouâll be staying there for a few weeks,â your professor continued, clearly enjoying the reaction. âSite studies, documentation, and a final presentation. This will be one of your biggest projects yet.â
Your grip on your pencil tightened. Quezon City.
Someone from the back raised his hand. âBut, sir⌠where in Quezon City?â
That question sparked a fresh wave of murmurs across the room. QC wasnât exactly smallâit was practically a city of its own.
Your professor adjusted his glasses, clearly expecting the reaction. âNear Diliman,â he replied casually. âSpecifically around the academic district. Youâll be studying urban integration and mixed-use redevelopment in that area.â
A few students straightened in their seats. âLike⌠near UP?â someone whispered.
Your professor nodded. âYes. Around the University of the Philippines Diliman. Thatâs where most of your site observations will take place.â
The room erupted againâlouder this time. UP Diliman. One of the most talked-about campuses in the country. A place people only imagined visiting unless they studied there. The wide academic oval, the trees, the cultureâit felt so far from the life youâd built in Cebu. You swallowed. You donât know what to feel. Happy? Excited? Confused? Scared? Wait, why would you be scared?
Thereâs no reason to be scared. Youâre only returning to Manila for a few weeks. You spent the rest of the class zoning out, the professorâs voice fading into nothing but background noise. Words like urban integration and site analysis floated past you without meaning. Your pencil had stopped moving long ago. You didnât even notice the bell ring.
It wasnât until a hand started waving dramatically in front of your face that you blinked.
âHuy!â MiguelâMigsâleaned closer, eyebrows furrowed. âIâve been calling you for, like, two minutes. Are you feeling alright?â
âHuh?â you muttered intelligently.
You glanced around and froze. The studio was empty. Chairs were pushed in. The usual morning chaos had vanished. Oh. Next class.
You looked back at Migs and forced a small smile. âYeah. Iâm alright.â
He didnât look convinced. Nevertheless, you quickly gathered your sketchbook and pens, shoving them into your bag with more force than necessary. âTime for next class?â
Migs sighed dramatically. âNo. The professor emailed. Heâs not coming today. Weâve got a vacancy for a few hours.â
âYeah, oh,â he repeated, narrowing his eyes at you. âYouâve been acting weird since the Manila announcement.â
You avoided his stare and adjusted the strap of your bag. âIâm not weird.â
Before you could protest, he grabbed you lightly by the shoulders and started steering you toward the door. âCome on. The others are at the canteen. Since weâre apparently going to Manila and becoming big-time architects, we deserve at least pancit canton to celebrate.â
Despite yourself, you let out a small laugh, âBut you know I donât eat that.â
âWell, we can always buy you something else.â
As he guided you out of the studio, sunlight spilled through the hallway windows, warming the polished floors. Manila. Quezon City. Diliman. The names echoed in your head like something unfinished. And for reasons you couldnât explain, your heart wouldnât settle... Just why?
Upon entering the noisy canteen, you immediately spotted your friends buying food (and fighting with other students as they cut the line). Karinaâyour friendâsaw you and Migs and tugged the other to leave with her before the fight escalated to something worse.
âFinally, you guys are here. Took you almost 30 minutes.â She said.
âSorry, Y/N here was zoning out,â Migs answered.
âAgain?â Chae asked, staring at you in worry.
"Itâs nothing, I was just thinking about something.â You finally spoke up.
âItâs definitely something, you werenât responding when I was calling your name.â Migs retorted before following you as you walked out of the canteen. The air was too hot for you to stay.
âWell, what are you thinking about?â Karina asked, tugging at your sleeve to slow your pace down a bit.
âProbably that faceless girl again,â Chae butted in.
âOhh, right. Did you dream of her again?â Karina looked at you with curiosity, âTell us what happened!â
You let out a sigh before sitting down on a bench, âItâs nothing, really.â
âI donât believe it,â Migs said, causing you to roll your eyes. Of course, you donât.
âSame,â Chae added, sitting next to you.
âI dreamed of that day we first moved to Manila, a girl was waving at me.â You said softly.
âThat only?â Chae asked, âAre there no more stories about your childhood?â
âThere is duh, but I donât think Y/N will tell us.â Migs sighed, crossing his arms while staring at you. Heâs worried, you know he is. Heâs like an older brother to you more than your own brother ever did.
âJust tell us about the girl,â Chae nudged gently. âOnly if you remember something.â
You looked down at your hands for a moment, fingers tracing the edge of the bench. âItâs... not that interesting,â you muttered.
âY/N,â Karina groaned dramatically. âYouâve been dreaming about this mysterious girl for years. That is definitely interesting.â
You sighed, realizing they werenât going to let this go. âFine.â
The three of them leaned closer immediately.
âIt happened when we first moved to Manila,â you began slowly. âI was six... maybe seven. I remember being really upset because we had just moved and I didnât know anyone yet.â
Your eyes drifted somewhere far away, the memory slowly piecing itself together.
âI was sitting outside our old house with my teddy bear. My mom told me to wait while she talked to the neighbors.â You paused, frowning slightly. âThen I noticed someone staring at me, but I ignored her and then...â
âI donât know, I just dozed off, I guess.â You shrugged.
âWait, someone as in a kid?â Chae asked quietly.
âWhat did she look like?â Karina asked.
You shook your head. âThatâs the weird part. I canât remember her face at all.â You laughed softly. âItâs like my brain just erased it.â
âBut I remember what she did.â
âShe waved at me from across the street first as Dad was carrying me inside the new house.â You went quiet, trying to remember.
âAnd then the next day, my mom forced me to go and play outside, but I just sat on the porch and watched the other kids play,â you sighed. âThen the same girl came up to me and asked why I looked so sad.â
âWhat did you say?â Migs asked.
âI told her I didnât have any friends here.â You smiled faintly at the memory.
âAnd she said, âThen Iâll be your first one.ââ
Chae placed a hand over her mouth. âThatâs actually cute.â
You chuckled quietly. âShe was really energetic. Like... really energetic. She grabbed my hand and dragged me to this empty lot near our house and said we could build a âsecret kingdomâ there.â
âA kingdom?â Karina laughed.
âYeah,â you nodded. âShe said when we grow up, weâd build real buildings there. I told her I wanted to design houses someday.â
Migs blinked. âYou were already set on architecture at six?â
You shrugged lightly. âI guess.â
âAnd she told me...â You hesitated for a second. ââThen youâll build my house when weâre older.ââ
The smile on your face lingeredâthen slowly faded. âWe used to play almost every day after that,â you continued quietly. âAfter school, before sunset... it just became normal.â
Silence settled around your group.
âThen what happened?â Chae asked gently.
You looked down again. âWe moved.â
âTo Cebu?â Migs asked.
âIt was sudden. I didnât even get to say goodbye properly.â Your fingers tightened slightly around the edge of your bag. âI remember waiting for her that last day... but she never came.â
Karina frowned. âMaybe she didnât know you were leaving?â
âMaybe,â you whispered.
âAnd now she shows up in your dreams?â Chae asked softly.
âStill no face?â Migs added.
You shook your head slowly. âNot fully.â
You glanced up, eyes distant. âBut itâs getting clearer.â
A quiet tension settled between your friends, because this wasnât just some random dream anymore. It felt like a memory trying to find its way backâslowly.
The morning was louder than usual.
Voices overlapped, footsteps echoed against concrete, and the low hum of a bus engine idling outside the campus gates made everything feel rushedâlike the day had started without waiting for anyone to catch up.
âY/N! Bilisan mo!â (âHurry up!â) Migs shouted from somewhere behind you.
âIâm walking as fast as I can!â you shot back, adjusting the strap of your heavy bag that felt like it carried your entire life inside itâsketchbooks, pens, rulers, clothes obviously, and unfinished plates you swore youâd fix on the bus.
Students from the University of San Carlos filled the walkway, all leading in the same direction. Some were dragging suitcases, others balancing tubes of rolled plans, and a few were still half-asleep, clutching coffee like it was the only thing keeping them alive.
The rented buses stood just outside the gate, engines rumbling impatiently. Its doors were wide open, and you spotted your professor standing nearby, clipboard in hand, calling out names like it was some kind of field trip, well, except it didnât feel like one. It felt bigger.
âGuys, come on!â you shouted, âProfessor Santos is over there!â
âArchitecture students! Make sure your groups are complete before boarding!â he called out. âWe are not leaving anyone behind!â
âOi, wait!â Chae jogged up beside you, slightly out of breath. âDid you bring your materials?â
You gave her a look. âOf course I did.â
âGood. Because if you didnât, Iâm not sharing mine.â
Karina appeared on your other side, sipping iced coffee like this was a casual outing. âRelax, Chae. Sheâs the most prepared out of all of us.â
âPrepared but mentally absent,â Migs added, finally catching up. âSheâs been zoning out since yesterday, right?â
You rolled your eyes. âCan we not do this in the early morning?â
âToo late,â he grinned.
You tried to laugh it off, but your chest felt... strange.
Manila. Quezon City. The words had been echoing in your head since yesterdayâs announcement. You tightened your grip on your bag. Itâs just a school trip. Just a few weeks. So why did it feel like you were about to walk into something you werenât ready for?
Your professor was looking straight at you. âGroup complete?â
You glanced at your friends. Migs. Chae. Karina.
You nodded. âComplete, sir.â
âGood. Get on the bus.â
One by one, your classmates began climbing inside, filling the space with chatter and excitement. Some were already taking pictures, others arguing over seats.
Migs nudged you lightly. âWindow seat?â
You hesitated for a second and then nodded. âYeah.â
As you stepped onto the bus, the cool air-conditioning hit your skin, a sharp contrast to the humid Cebu morning. You made your way to a seat by the window, dropping your bag beside you. Outside, the campus slowly blurred as more students boarded. You rested your head lightly against the glass. For a brief moment, your eyes fluttered shut. And just like thatâa memory flashed in your mind. A girl. Standing across the street. Waving.
You opened your eyes immediately, heart skipping.
The bus engine roared louder. You swallowed.
Manila was waiting. And somehowâit felt like someone else was, too.
The bus hadnât even left the city yet when your eyes finally gave in.
Your head rested against the cool glass, the vibrations of the engine steady beneath you. Voices blurred into the background, turning into nothing but distant noise as sleep slowly pulled you under.
And thenâyou were there again. Back at the same street. The same soft afternoon light.
A small version of you stood by the gate, clutching your teddy bear tightly to your chest. The air felt warmer here, quieter... like time had slowed down just for this moment.
Across the street was her. The girl. Only this time, she was closer and no longer just a silhouette.
You could see the outline of her hair, the way it moved when the wind passed by. You could hear her laughterâloud, familiar, like something youâd heard a thousand times before.
She lifted her hand and waved. âHey!â
Her voice was clearer now. Too clear.
You took a step forward. âWaitââ
Everything blurred. Her face... Just a little moreâ
âY/N!â Your eyes shot open.
âHOY! GISING NA!â (âHey! Wake up!â) Migsâ voice practically exploded beside you as he shook your shoulder.
You blinked rapidly, disoriented.
The quiet dream was shattered instantly, replaced by noise. Loud, chaotic, very awake noise.
âPASS THE CHIPS!" âHindi akin âyan, kay Karina âyan!â (âThatâs not mine, thatâs Karinaâs!â) âBRO, DONâT OPEN IT LIKE THAT-â
You sat up straight, heart still racing as you tried to process where you were. The bus, right.
Your classmates were in full chaos mode now. Someone had already connected their phone to a speaker to a speaker, blasting old OPM songs at an unnecessarily loud volume. A group at the back was laughing over something you didnât catch, while a few others were arguing over who got the window seats.
âFinally,â Migs said, plopping down beside you. âAkala ko na-coma ka na.â (âI thought you went into a comaâ).
You rubbed your eyes. âCan you not yell like that?â
âNo,â he grinned. âYou were dead asleep. What were you dreaming about?â
Chae suddenly popped up from the seat in front of you, resting her chin on the headrest. âThe girl again?â
Karina turned around too, drink in hand. âI bet itâs the girl.â
You groaned, âCan we not make this a thing?â
âSo it is the girl,â Migs smirked.
You looked away, back toward the window. The city outside was slowly passing by, familiar roads turning into something less recognizable the farther you went.
â... She was closer this time,â you admitted quietly.
That was enough to shut them up for a second.
Chaeâs expression softened. âCloser how?â
âI could hear her voice,â you said, fingers lightly gripping the edge of your seat. âAnd I almost saw her face.â
âAlmost?â Karina asked.
âThen what happened?â Migs leaned in slightly.
You exhaled. âYou woke me up.â
âOy, kasalanan ko pa?â (âOh, now itâs my fault?â) He scoffed, throwing his hands up.
You rolled your eyes, but a small smile slipped through. From the back of the bus, someone suddenly shoutedââMAGKAKARAOKE NA!â (âWeâre starting karaoke!â)
âNo way,â Karina immediately stood up. âGive me the mic.â
âYou donât even need a mic,â Migs muttered.
âI heard that!â
Laughter erupted around you as the already chaotic bus somehow got even louder. Chae got pulled into the commotion, leaving you and Migs behind for a moment. He glanced at you. âYou good?â
You nodded, leaning your head back against the seat. âYeah.â
But as the music started, voices singing off-key and laughter filling every corner of the busâyour mind drifted back. To the dream. To the girl. The way she looked at you was like she already knew you.
You swallowed. She was getting clearer and somehow, that scared you more than not remembering at all.
By the time the bus finally rolled into Quezon City, the sky had already begun to shift into late afternoon hues. The noise inside slowly died down, replaced by tired sighs and limbs that felt stretched.
âWeâre here,â someone muttered.
You lifted your head, blinking as the unfamiliar city came into view. Tall buildings. Endless cars. People everywhere. It felt different. Very different.
âWelcome to QC, architects!â your professor announced as the bus turned into the driveway of their hotel. âGet your things ready. Weâll be checking in first, then youâre free for the rest of the evening. Just be back before curfew.â
The bus slowed. Everyone started looking out the windows.
Karina leaned forward, squinting dramatically at the view. âSo this is Manila...â she said slowly, scanning everything like a critic.
She paused. â...ang siksikâ (âso crowdedâ).
Then she turned her head and looked straight at Migs. â...tsaka parang pollutedâ (âand it seems pollutedâ).
Migs blinked. ââHoy?! Baât ako yung tinitignan mo?!â (âHey?! Why are you looking at me?!â) He shot back immediately.
Karina just shrugged, completely unfazed. âYou just fit the description.â
âExcuse me?!â Migs placed a hand on his chest, offended. âAko pa talaga?!â (âMe? Really?!â)
You couldnât help itâyou laughed, shaking your head. âGrabi ka, Karinaâ (âYouâre harsh, Karinaâ), you said.
âSakto langâ (âJust rightâ), she smirked. âAnd observation lang dinâ (âAnd itâs just an observationâ).
Chae rolled her eyes, still laughing. âYou guys seriously watch too many movies.â
âWorth it naman,â (âItâs worth it thoughâ) Karina replied proudly.
âNot for me,â Migs muttered under his breath, still offended.
The tension from the long ride eased instantly, laughter filling the bus as it finally came to a stop. You looked out the window again. Manila was crowded. Noisy. Alive in a way Cebu wasnât.
You adjusted your bag on your lap. This was going to be a long few weeks.
The hotel was nicer than you expected. Clean lobby. Strong air-conditioning. Soft lightning that made you want to lie down immediately and not move for the next ten hours.
âRoom assignments are posted here!â Chae called, pointing at the list.
Everyone crowded around it at once.
âWaitâbakit hindi tayo magkakasama?!â (âWhy arenât we in the same room?!â) âSwap tayo, dali!â (âLetâs switch, hurry!â) âNO, I CALLED THIS ROOM FIRST-â
âGuys, relax!â someone laughed.
You scanned the list quickly. Room 304.
You found your name right besideââKarina?â you turned.
She was already grinning. âRoommates.â
âWow, sana all.â Migs muttered behind you. âIâm stuck with these guys.â
âSkill issue,â Karina shot back.
You let out a tired sigh while shaking your head, âOh my god.â
A few minutes later, you pushed open the door to your room. Cool air hit your face instantly.
âOkay, this is nice,â Karina said, walking in and dropping her bag on one of the beds.
You followed, tossing yours onto the other bed with a quiet thud before immediately sitting down. âFive minutes,â you muttered.
âSame,â Karina said, already kicking off her shoes.
You barely had time to lie back whenâknock knock knock. Without waiting, the door opened.
âHello? We live here now,â Migs announced, stepping inside like he owned the place. Chae slipped in after him, closing the door behind her.
âYou donât even stay here,â Karina said, raising a brow.
âDetails,â Migs waved it off, already looking around. âUy, ang ayos ng room nyo ah.â (âHey, your room is niceâ).
âOf course,â Karina smirked. âWe got the better one.â
âWow, favoritism,â he muttered.
You buried your face into your pillow. âCan you guys not be loud for five minutes?â
âNo,â Chae said simply, sitting on the edge of your bed. âWeâre going out.â
You groaned. âI just got here.â
âExactly,â Karina said, standing up and already fixing her hair in the mirror. âFirst time in QC. Weâre not wasting it.â
Migs nodded. âThereâs a campus nearby. Letâs check it out.â
Chae glanced at you. âCome on. Youâre not actually going to sleep, right?â
You sighed, pushing yourself up from the bed. âFine.â
Karina grinned. âKnew it.â
âGive me two minutes,â you said, grabbing your bag.
âMake it one,â Migs replied.
âMake it zero,â Karina added.
You rolled your eyes. âGet out so I can fix myself.
âGrabe, pa-importante,â (âWow, acting so importantâ), Migs muttered as he and Chae headed for the door.
âLabas.â (âGet outâ). Karina pointed.
âAlright, alright,â he laughed, stepping out.
The door closed, you let out a small breath, glancing at your reflection for a second.
âLetâs go,â Karina said.
You nodded. âComing.â
And just like that, the two of you stepped out of the roomânot knowing you were about to get completely lost.
Not long after, the four of you found yourselves walking under the streetlights, following the path that led to the University of the Philippines Diliman. The difference was immediate. It was quieter.
The roads stretched wider, lined with tall trees that swayed gently with the evening breeze. Students passed by in small groups, some laughing, some just walking side by side like they had nowhere else to be.
âThis place feels...different,â you said, glancing around.
âPeaceful,â Chae nodded.
âBig,â Karina added, turning in a slow circle.
Migs stretched his arms. âI like it here. Parang walang stress.â (âSeems stress-freeâ).
You gave a small nod, hands tucked into your pockets. It really did feel different. You just couldnât explain why.
âLetâs go there!â Karina suddenly pointed toward a lit pathway.
âWaitââ you started, but the three of them were already walking ahead.
You sighed. âOf course.â
You followed, catching up easily at first. They were talking about somethingâprobably food, or where to go nextâbut your attention drifted. You slowed down a little, eyes wandering around the place. The trees. The buildings. Even the air felt...familiar.
You stopped for a second, looking at a nearby sign. Then a tree. ThenâYou looked up and they were gone. â...Great.â You sighed.
Turning around left, then rightânothing. Just people you didnât recognize.
âOkay...donât panic,â you muttered, gripping your phone a little tighter. You started walking. Maybe they went this way...or that way. You tried to retrace your steps, but everything began to look the same. Paths. Trees. Lights.
You let out a small breath. âNice, Y/N. First day, naligaw agad.â (âlost alreadyâ).
A few minutes later, you found yourself stepping into a wide open field. You slowed down. The space opened up in front of you, wider than anything youâd seen since entering the campus. The air felt cooler here, quieter. You stopped walking.
â...Okay, this is definitely not where we came from.â You looked around, completely lost now.
You didnât know it, but you had wandered into the Sunken Garden. You took a few steps forward, trying to spot anything familiarâand walked straight into someone.
âOofââ
âAhâsorryââ
Papers slipped from her hands, scattering across the grass.
âSorry,â you said quickly, crouching down. âI wasnât looking-â
âItâs okay, I-â
You both paused. Same timing.
You reached for the same sheet at the same time, fingers brushing for just a second and something in your chest pulled. You froze. It wasnât painful. It wasnât even strong. Just a soft tug, but enough to make you notice. Like something was pulling you a little closer, even when you werenât moving. You slowly looked up and met her eyes.
For a moment, everything else faded into the backgroundâthe distant chatter, the footsteps, the quiet hum of the campus at night,
There it was again. That feeling. It started small. Then something in your chest flickeredâlike a flame catching onto something it had been waiting for. Warm and sudden. Unfamiliar, yet not entirely new.
You inhaled slightly. Is it a memory? No...not quite. Perhapsâa feeling. Something old, buried deep enough that you didnât recognize it anymore. You werenât sure. You just knew it was there.
And thenâyou noticed the way she was looking at you. So still, so quiet. Like she felt it too. Or maybe you were just imagining it. Your hand lingered for a second longer than it should have before you pulled it back, handing her the papers you picked up.
âHere,â you said softly. Your voice sounded normal, but your chest didnât feel the same.
She took them, fingers brushing yours againâjust as brief, just as strange, neither of you spoke. Because somehow, it didnât feel like a moment that needed words.
You shifted slightly, suddenly aware of how long the silence had stretched. Say something. What? Anything.
Your eyes dropped to the papers in her handsâsketches, clean lines, detailed and confident.
â...Thatâs a nice drawing,â you blurted out, a little too quickly.
So smooth that it made you mentally winced.
But she didnât laugh. She glanced down at her papers, then back at you. âOhâuh, thanks.â
You cleared your throat, trying to recover. âAre you...Taking Fine Arts or something?â
âYeah,â she nodded, still looking at you like she was trying to figure something out. âVisual communication.â
âThatâs cool,â you said, giving a small nod. âItâs really good.â
âThanks,â she repeated, softer this time.
A short pause, then her brows furrowed slightly.
You froze. Well, of course, she noticed.
You let out a small, awkward laugh, rubbing the back of your neck. âUh...yeah. A little.â
âA little?â she repeated, amused.
âOkay, a lot,â you admitted, glancing around as the answer might magically appear.
She smiled and for some reason, that made it worse.
âI can help you,â she said. âWhere are you supposed to be going?â
âHonestly?â you let out a breath. âI donât even know anymore. I was with my friends and then I kind of...wandered off.â
âNice,â she nodded, like that made perfect sense. âHappens.â
You huffed out a quiet laugh, she adjusted the papers in her hands before stepping slightly beside you instead of in front.
âIâm Sophia, by the way.â
You hesitated for half a second. Thenâ
The name felt heavier leaving your mouth than it should have.
Sophia repeated it under her breath, like she was testing how it sounded. â...Y/N.â
You didnât miss it. âYeah.â
She gave a small nod, then gestured forward. âCome on. Iâll walk you back before you get even more lost.â
âHey, Iâm not thatââ You paused. â...okay, yeah. Lead the way.â
She laughed softly. And just like that, the two of you started walking side by side, at first, it was quiet. Not awkward exactlyâjust unfamiliar.
âYouâre not from here,â she said after a moment.
âIs it that obvious?â
âA little,â she smiled. âYou look like youâre trying to memorize everything.â
You glanced around. â...First time here.â
âQC,â you corrected. âIâm from Cebu. Weâre here for a project.â
âArchitecture?â she guessed.
You looked at her, surprised. âYeah.â
She shrugged lightly. âYou have that look.â
âSleep-deprived,â she said without missing a beat.
You laughed. âFair enough.â
The conversation came easier after that. Small things. Where were you staying? How long would you be in the city? Random complaints about school. But every now and then, thereâd be a pause. A glance. Something unspoken is sitting quietly between the two of you. Like both of you were thinking the same thing, but neither of you knew how to say it. Or if you even should.
You shoved your hands into the pockets of your hoodie, trying to ignore the strange warmth still lingering in your chest. It didnât go away. Not even as you kept walking. Not even as you tried to focus on the conversation. And definitely not when she walked just a little closer. Like she didnât notice she was doing it, or maybe she did.
A few meters away, completely unaware of everything happening at the Sunken Garden.
âGago, ang sarapââ (âThis is so goodâ) Chae mumbled mid-bite, eyes half-focused on the street food in her hand.
Then she froze. â...Wait.â Her eyes narrowed.
She leaned forward a little, squinting past the small crowd. âWait...waitââ
Without a warning... SLAP.
Migs choked slightly. âAno ba?!â (âWhat was that for?!â)
âIS THAT Y/N?â Chae hissed, still staring.
âHa? Saan?â (âHuh? Where?â) Migs turned around, still chewing, sauce very much visible on his lips. âWhat are youââ
He paused. â...Ay.â (âOh.â)
Across the open field was you. Walking. Talking. Laughing. With someone.
âSince when did she find people?!â Migs muttered.
âSince when did she leave us?!â Chae shot back.
âSince when did she replace us?!â he added dramatically.
âFocus!â Chae grabbed his arm.
âKARINA!â she suddenly yelled.
A few steps away, Karina was already pulling her phone out, ready to call you, she turned. âWhatââ
Chae pointed aggressively. âTHE PERSON YOUâRE LOOKING FOR IS RIGHT THERE!â
Karina followed her finger; she saw you and paused. â...What the hell?â
She took a step forward immediately. âWhy is she with someoneââ
Chae grabbed her arm, pulling her back. âWait.â
Karina frowned. âWhat?â
Chae squinted again, eyes now locked on the girl beside you. â...Who is that?â
Migs leaned slightly to the side, trying to get a better look. â...I donât know,â he said, lowering his voice a bit.
There was a short pause. All three of them are watching you and Sophia talking like youâd known each other longer than just a few minutes.
Karina slowly crossed her arms. âSince when does Y/N talk to strangers like that?â
Migs wiped the corner of his mouth, still staring. âUh, since never.â
Chae didnât say anything; she just kept watching. Because something about the way you were standing there felt a little too natural. A little too comfortable. Like that wasnât your first time meeting her.
â...Okay,â Karina said finally. âNow, Iâm curious.â
By the time the two of you slowed down, the campus had already faded behind you. Streetlights replaced the trees. The quiet turned into distant traffic. You were still talking about random things, nothing too deepâuntil you both stopped at the same time.
You looked up. â...Oh.â
The hotel stood right in front of you.
You blinked. â...You walked me back here.â
Sophia followed your gaze, then let out a small breath, like she hadnât noticed either. "Yeah... I guess I did.â
A short pause settled between you. Not comfortable. Just... new.
You shifted your weight slightly, rubbing your arm instinctively.
âUh... thanks,â you said. âFor, you know... not letting me get even more lost.â
She smiled, small and easy. âItâs nothing.â
You nodded once. âRight.â
â...So,â Sophia started, glancing at the entrance before looking back at you, âI guess Iâll see you around?â
You hesitated for half a second. âYeah,â you said. âSee you.â
There was a tiny part of you that felt like you should say something else. But you didnât know what. So, instead, you just gave a small wave and turned toward the entrance. The glass doors slid open and just like that, you walked inside.
Sophia stayed where she was. Watching the doors close and you fading away from her sight.
The reflection of the streetlights flickered across the glass, but she barely noticed. Her chest still felt... off. Not in a bad way, of course. Just... a bit unsettled.
She exhaled slowly, running a hand through her hair. âWhy does she feel so familiar...â she muttered under her breath.
She shook her head lightly, turning away. âWhatever.â
She started walking back. But, she didnât get far.
âSOPHIA!â
She closed her eyes for a second. Of course.
She turned around just in time to see Daniela jogging toward her, Manon walking right behind her, both looking way too energetic for this hour.
âWhat are you doing here?â Daniela asked immediately, not even giving her time to speak. âWeâve been looking for you everywhere.â
âAnd who were you with?â Daniela added, narrowing her eyes slightly like she already had a theory.
Manon crossed her arms, clearly interested. âYou disappeared for like, thirty minutes.â
Sophia sighed. âI just helped someone find their way,â she said simply, continuing to walk.
Daniela followed instantly. âSomeone?â
âWho?â
âFrom where?â
âIs she cute?â
âDaniela,â Manon said, trying to stifle her laughter.
âWhat? Iâm asking important questions.â
Sophia walked faster. âGuys, itâs nothing.â
âThatâs not ânothing,ââ Daniela shot back.
Manon nodded. âYou donât just disappear for ânothing.ââ
Sophia didnât answer; she just kept walking. Faster this time.
Daniela gasped dramatically. âOh my god, sheâs hiding something.â
âIâm not hiding anything,â Sopiha said, already a few steps ahead.
âLies!â Manon pointed at her back.
Daniela shook her head, clicking her tongue. âWeâll find out eventually.â
Sophia sighed again. She really shouldâve expected this.
Meanwhile, you pushed open your room door. âFinally.â Then you stopped.
Miguel. Charmaine. Karina. All three of them were inside. Sitting, waiting, with the same exact look on their faces, mischief.
You blinked. â...Why do you all look like that?â
Karina leaned back against the bed, arms crossed and smirking. âWell,â she said.
âCare to explain,â Migs added, âwho you were with?â
Chae tilted her head slightly. "And why do you look like youâve known her your whole life?â
You froze. â...What?â
âDonât play dumb,â Karina said. âWe saw you.â
Migs nodded. âWalking. Talking. Smiling.â
Chae leaned forward a bit, âwith a girl.â
Silence. All eyes on you.
You opened your mouth. Closed it. â...I got lost.â
Migs stared at you. â...Thatâs not the point.â
âVery much not the point,â Karina agreed.
Chae smiled slightly. âSo...â
âStart talking.â Needless to say, you spent an hour explaining everything. An hour of torture because they keep interrupting you.
â...And thatâs it.â You crossed your arms, already done explaining. âShe helped me get back. End of story.â
âEnd of story?â Migs repeated slowly.
âThatâs your story?â Karina added, brows raised.
Chae tilted her head. âYou expect us to believe that?â
You stared at them. âBecause thatâs literally what happened.â
âMm,â Migs nodded. âAnd you just happened to walk around with her for that long?â
âWe were walking,â you said. âBecause she was helping me.â
âFor how long?â Karina pressed.
"I donât know.â
âExactly,â Migs pointed out.
âThatâs normal,â you argued.
âItâs not normal for you,â Chae cut in. âYou donât even talk to strangers like that.â
âYeah,â Karina agreed. âYou barely talk to us.â
âWow,â you deadpanned. âThatâs not true.â
âIt is,â all three said at once.
You blinked. â...Okay, wow.â
Migs leaned forward. âBe honest.â
âI am being honest.â
âDid you like her?â he asked.
â...What?â
Karina gasped. âOh, my god.â
Chae covered her mouth. âWAIT.â
âWhy would I?!â you immediately said.
âWhy not?â Migs shot back
âBecause I just met her, obviously?!â you replied.
âThat has never stopped anyone,â Karina said.
âExactly,â Chae added. âLove at first sight exists.â
âI did not fall in love,â you said, already regretting engaging.
"You didnât say you didnât like her,â Migs pointed out.
âI literally just did!â
âNo, you said you didnât fall in love,â Karina corrected, raising a finger.
âWhich is different,â Chae nodded.
âOh my god,â you groaned, dragging a hand down your face.
Migs leaned forward, eyes narrowing. âSo you do like her.â
âI donâtââ
âYou hesitated,â Karina said.
âI did not hesitate!â
âYou paused,â Chae added.
âI was breathing!â
âThat was a suspicious breath,â Migs said.
You stared at all three of them. ââŚYou guys are unbelievable.â
Karina smirked. âJust answer the question.â
You crossed your arms. âThere is no question.â
âThere is,â Migs said. âDo you like her?â
You opened your mouth, then closed it. ââŚI donât even know her,â you muttered instead. The three of them went quiet for half a second.
âOHHHH,â Karina dragged out.
âThatâs not a no,â Chae whispered.
âThatâs definitely not a no,â Migs nodded.
âOUT,â you said, grabbing a pillow and throwing it at them.
ââŚWhat?â Migs said.
âGet out,â you repeated, standing up now. âAll of you. Out. Iâm done.â
Karina frowned. âExcuse me? This is my room.â
âI donât care,â you said, already pushing them toward the door. âGo. Leave. Disappear.â
âY/Nââ Chae laughed as she got shoved out.
âGrabe, sheâs mad,â Migs said, grabbing his stuff.
âHELLO?!â Karina resisted. âI SLEEP HERE?!â
You opened the door and shoved her out anyway.
And slammed it shut. Silence. Then the noise.
âHEY!â Karina yelled from outside. âITâS MY ROOM TOO! HELLO?! WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO SLEEP?!â
You leaned your head against the door. âI DONâT CARE,â you shouted back.
Migsâ laughter echoed down the hallway.
âGRABE KA!â (âYouâre too much!â) Karina complained.
You ignored them, walking back to your bed and dropping onto it face-first. Finally, it's quiet. You stared at the ceiling for a second. Then, you turned to your side.
ââŚShe was just helping,â you muttered.
But your chest didnât feel normal. That same tug. That warmth. Still there. You closed your eyes and then you were there again.
Same place, same light. But clearer, the girl stood closer now. You could hear her laugh. See the way she moved.
She ran ahead, then turned back to you. âCome on!â
You followed. âWaitââ
She stopped and looked at you. And this timeâ
You woke up, sitting up slightly, breathing unevenly. The room was quiet. Dark.
You pressed your hand against your chest. ââŚWhat was that?â
She didnât even make it halfway back when Daniela came running out of nowhere, grabbing her wrist.
âGuys!â Daniela turned around dramatically. âI found her!â
And just like that, everyone appeared.
Lara. Megan. Yoonchae. Manon. All at once. Surrounding her.
âNo,â Sophia said immediately, already trying to walk past them. âNo, Iâm not doing this.â
âYes, you are,â Daniela said, pulling her back.
âExplain,â Megan added, crossing her arms.
âWho was she?â Yoonchae asked, already leaning forward like she was about to hear gossip.
âWhere did you meet her?â Lara chimed in.
âWhy were you smiling?â Daniela added.
âI was not smiling,â Sophia said.
âYou were,â Manon said calmly.
âConfirmed,â Megan nodded.
Sophia blinked. ââŚYou guys werenât even there.â
âWe saw you,â Daniela said.
âFrom where?!â Sophia frowned.
âThatâs not the point,â Lara waved it off.
âAnswer the question.â
Sophia exhaled slowly. âShe got lost. I helped her. Thatâs it.â
âFor thirty minutes?â Megan asked.
Sophia paused. ââŚI donât know how long it was.â
âOHHH,â Daniela dragged out.
âYou lost track of time,â Yoonchae added.
âThatâs serious,â Lara said.
âItâs not serious,â Sophia replied quickly.
âYou donât even talk to people,â Megan pointed out.
âIt is,â Manon nodded.
Sophia started walking again and they followed. Of course they did.
âWhatâs her name?â Daniela asked.
Sophia didnât answer immediately. ââŚY/N.â
âYOU LEARNED HER NAME?!â Yoonchae gasped.
âThatâs already suspicious,â Megan said.
âYou donât learn names,â Daniela added.
âExactly,â Daniela pointed out.
âIs she pretty?â Yoonchae asked.
Sophia stopped walking. ââŚThatâs irrelevant.â
âThatâs a yes,â Megan said.
âThatâs definitely a yes,â Daniela agreed.
Sophia groaned, rubbing her temple. âYou guys are so annoying.â
âAnd youâre hiding something,â Lara replied.
Daniela suddenly stepped in front of her, walking backwards so she could face her. âOkay, serious question.â
Sophia already didnât like that tone.
Daniela tilted her head slightly, eyes narrowing just a bit. ââŚWhat if thatâs your childhood crush, huh?â
Everything went quiet. Just for a second. Sophia didnât react immediately. Didnât laugh, didnât deny it. She just paused. Then looked away. ââŚGoodnight.â
She stepped past Daniela, walked and didnât stop.
âHEY!â Daniela called after her. âYouâre ignoring the question!â
Sophia kept walking. âSee you guys tomorrow,â she said, not even turning around. The group watched her disappear into the building.
ââŚOh, that got her,â Daniela said.
Megan nodded. âThat definitely got her.â
Yoonchae blinked. âWait⌠what if itâs actually true?â
Lara tilted her head. âThat would be insane.â
Manon just crossed her arms, watching where Sophia disappeared. ââŚNot impossible.â
Later that night. Her room was quiet, finally. Sophia dropped her bag and sat on her bed.
ââŚAng ingay nila.â (âTheyâre so noisy.â)
She reached for her sketchbook, flipped it open and started drawing. Without thinking, lines forming, soft and familiar. Until she stopped and looked down.
Her breath hitched slightly. ââŚWhy did I draw her?â
A face, your face. Not perfect, but recognizable. She stared.
Then a memory flashed. A street, a younger her, a girl by the gate holding a teddy bear and laughing and then gone.
Sophia blinked. ââŚWhat was that?â
She looked back at the sketch. Her fingers traced the page lightly.
The name felt strange. But not new and that stayed with her.
The next few days passed by fast. Too fast.
âY/N, measure that side again!â âWait, this doesnât match the planââ âWhereâs Miguel?!â âHere!â Migs shouted from across the side. âIâm literally right here!â âThis doesnât alignâwho did this?â âNot me!â
You wiped the sweat from your forehead, adjusting the helmet slightly as you stepped back from the structure youâd been sketching.
âI said it wasnât me!â Migs called from the other side, holding a measuring tape as if it would prove his innocence. âWhy am I always the suspect?!â
âBecause itâs always you,â Karina shot back without looking up from her notes.
You let out a quiet breath, crouching slightly again to double-check the markings on the ground. The sun was already high, heat settling into your skin even through the thin fabric of your shirt.
Architecture wasnât just drawing.
It was walking around under the extreme heat, measuring, rechecking, and documenting everything like your grade depended on itâwell, of course it did.
âGot it?â Chae asked, peeking over your shoulder.
âYeah,â you nodded, jotting something down quickly. âJust needed to recheckâgotta make sure Iâm right this time.â
âBreak muna!â (âBreak first!â) Chae suddenly called out after chuckling.
âFinally,â Karina muttered, stretching her arms above her head. âI thought I was going to collapse.â
Migs dropped the measuring tape dramatically. âIâm already halfway there.â
You stood up, rolling your shoulders slightly to ease the tension. â...Iâm grabbing a drink,â you said after a moment, glancing toward the street.
Across the site, a small cafe sat tucked between buildings. Nothing fancyâbut it looked cold and quiet. Very tempting.
âNo pasalubong?â (âNo takeaway for us?â) Migs called out immediately.
âYou have legs,â you replied without looking back.
âAng sama mo,â (âYouâre so meanâ) he muttered.
You ignored him, already crossing the street.
The moment you stepped inside, the change was immediate.
Cool air wrapped around you, a sharp contrast to the heat outside. The noise of the street dulled, replaced by low chatter and the quiet hum of machines behind the counter.
You let out a small breath you didnât realize you were holding.
âWelcome!â the barista greeted.
You nodded, scanning the menu quickly before ordering something cold. While waiting, you leaned lightly against the counter, shifting your weight from one foot to the other. Your helmet hung from your arm, your vest slightly wrinkled, hair not exactly cooperating anymore. You pulled out your phone, scrolling absentmindedly.
You froze. Well, not completely, just enough. That voice.
You turned around, and there she was. Sophia, standing a few steps away, holding a drink, looking just as surprised as you feltâbefore her expression softened into something more familiar. âHi,â she said.
â...Hi,â you replied, blinking once like you needed a second to catch up.
A small pause settled between you. Then you let out a quiet, almost awkward laugh. âWhat are you doing here?â
She glanced at your outfit firstâyour vest, the helmetâthen back at you. âI could ask you the same thing,â she said, a hint of amusement in her voice. âConstruction mode?â
You looked down briefly. ââŚYeah,â you said, adjusting your grip on the helmet. âSchool project.â
She nodded like that made perfect sense.
âAnd you?â you asked.
âJust taking a break,â she said, lifting her drink slightly. âClasses.â
Right... You nodded. Of course. Another pause, but this one didnât feel as awkward as before. Just⌠quiet. Easy.
âSoâŚâ you shifted a little, resting your elbow lightly on the counter. âDid you get back okay last time?â
Sophia smiled. âYeah,â she said. âYou?â
ââŚEventually,â you admitted.
She laughed softly. And there it was again, that feeling. Subtle. But there. Like something warm settling in your chest without asking permission. You looked away for a second, pretending to check your drink when it was handed to you.
âThanks,â you muttered, more to the barista than anything.
OutsideâMigs squinted through the cafĂŠ window, one hand shielding his eyes from the sun. ââŚOi.â
Chae leaned beside him. âWhat?â
Karina, who had been scrolling through her phone, looked up. âWhat are youââ
She followed his gaze and paused. ââŚWait.â
Chaeâs eyes widened. âWAIT.â
Inside the cafĂŠ was you. Standing there. Talking. Smiling. With her.
âOh my god,â Karina whispered.
âOH MY GOD,â Chae echoed.
âThatâs her,â Migs confirmed.
Too late. The cafĂŠ door opened with a small chime. You barely had time to react.
âHI!â Chae greeted loudly. Way too loud.
You flinched. Oh no. âGuysââ you started, already stepping forward.
They were already in front of Sophia. Of course they were.
âHi!â Karina smiled, suddenly polite. Suspiciously polite. âWeâre her friends.â
Sophia blinked once, then smiled back. âHi.â
âIâm Charmaine, just Chae is fine hehe,â
âMiguelâwell, you can call me Migs,â
âKarina,â They introduced themselves almost at the same time.
âNice to meet you,â Sophia said, clearly amused now.
âSo,â Migs started, hands on his hips, âyouâre the one who helped her?â
You closed your eyes briefly, please stop.
âYeah,â Sophia nodded.
âThank you for that,â Chae said. âShe gets lost really easily.â
âI do notââ you started.
âShe does,â Karina cut in.
Sophia laughed and somehow that made everything worse.
âAre you from here?â Migs asked.
âUP student?â Chae followed.
âWhat course?â Karina added.
You stepped in immediately.
âOkay, alright, this is enoughââ
You grabbed Migs by the arm. âWeâre leaving.â
âWhat?!â he protested.
âNow.â You turned back to Sophia, already pulling them away.
âIâm so sorry,â you muttered quickly.
Sophia shook her head slightly, still smiling. âItâs okay.â
You nodded once, then dragged your friends out before they could say anything else.
âWHAT was that?!â you whisper-shouted.
âThat,â Karina said calmly, âwas us being friendly.â
âYou were smiling again,â Chae added.
âYou were literally glowing,â Migs said.
âYou were glowing,â all three said at once.
You groaned, dragging a hand down your face.
From inside the cafĂŠ, Sophia watched you through the glass, still holding her drink, still smiling a little. She shook her head lightly to herself, then took a sip, but her eyes lingered just a second longer than they should have.
Sophia knew something was wrong the moment she opened her door. Her shoes were moved. Not slightly. Completely rearranged.
ââŚWhat,â she said flatly, stepping inside.
âWelcome home!â She didnât even need to look up.
Megan was sprawled across her couch like she paid rent, one leg hanging off the side, scrolling through her phone like she had nothing better to do. Meanwhile, Yoonchae was in the kitchenâher kitchenâopening cabinets like she was on a mission.
âWhy are you in my house?â Sophia asked, dropping her bag by the door.
âItâs not a house, itâs a unit,â Megan corrected lazily.
âThatâs not the point.â
âRelax,â Yoonchae called out from the kitchen. âWe let ourselves in.â
âI can see that.â Sophia stepped further inside, eyes scanning the damage and grimacing.
Cushions are out of place, bag of chips is already open, and a cupâher cupâbeing used without permission. She closed her eyes for a second. ââŚYou guys are unbelievable.â
âThank you,â Megan said.
âThat wasnât a compliment.â
Yoonchae walked back into the living room, holding a drink she definitely did not ask permission for. âYouâve been weird,â she said bluntly.
âYou have,â Megan added without even looking up. âYouâve been quieter.â
âYou donât even argue back anymore,â Yoonchae said, dropping onto the couch beside Megan.
ââŚThatâs called growth.â
âItâs called suspicious,â Megan replied.
Sophia stared at them, unimpressed. ââŚGet out.â
âNo,â both of them said.
She sighed, walking past them toward the kitchen. âI have work to do.â
âYouâve been âdoing workâ for three days,â Yoonchae followed her with her eyes. âAnd yet you still stare at nothing for five minutes straight.â
âI do not stare at nothing.â
âYou literally froze while holding your pencil earlier,â Megan added. âWe saw you.â
ââŚYou were watching me?â
âThatâs not the point,â Megan repeated what Sophia said,
Sophia moved around the kitchen, grabbing a glass and pouring water. Megan flipped through channels. Yoonchae sat cross-legged on the couch.
âYouâve been quiet.â
Sophia didnât look up. âI get quiet.â
âNot like this,â Megan said.
Sophia shrugged. âBusy.â
âMm,â Yoonchae hummed. âWith what?â
Megan glanced at her. ââŚAnd?â
Sophia frowned slightly. âAnd what?â
Yoonchae tilted her head. âThatâs it?â
Silence. Then Megan sat up a little. âOkay, but likeâwhat have you been thinking about?â
Sophia blinked once. âNothing.â
âNothing?â Yoonchae repeated.
Sophia took a sip of water before setting the glass down. âWhy are you asking?â
âNo reason,â Megan said quickly.
âJust curious,â Yoonchae added.
Sophia narrowed her eyes slightly. ââŚYouâre being weird.â
âWeâre not the weird ones,â Megan muttered.
Sophia ignored that, turning slightly away. But the silence didnât leave, it stayed. Lingering.
Sophia froze. Just a little, barely noticeable. ââŚWhat about her?â she asked, keeping her voice even.
Yoonchae watched her carefully. âYouâve been thinking about her.â
Megan raised a brow. âYou just paused.â
âYou did,â Yoonchae said.
Sophia exhaled quietly, grabbing her glass again just to have something to hold. ââŚI just remembered.â
âRemembered what?â Megan asked.
Sophia opened her mouth and closed it. ââŚNothing.â
That was enough. Megan and Yoonchae exchanged a look.
Then Megan leaned forward slightly. âOkay, real talk.â
Sophia didnât like that tone. âWhat?â
ââŚDo you think she looks familiar?â The question was simple. Too simple, but it landed.
Sophia didnât answer right away, didnât deny it either. She just stared at the glass in her hand. ââŚMaybe,â she said finally.
âMaybe?â Yoonchae echoed.
âI donât know,â Sophia said, a little sharper now. âItâs just a feeling.â
âA feeling,â Megan repeated.
Yoonchae spoke, quieter this time. âWhat kind of feeling?â
Sophia frowned. ââŚWhat do you mean?â
âLike,â Yoonchae shrugged, âdoes she remind you of someone?â
Sophia looked up. ââŚNo.â Too quick.
Megan caught it immediately. âThat was fast.â
âYou didnât even think about it,â Megan said.
âThen why are you overthinking her?â Yoonchae asked softly.
That made her stop. Actually stop. ââŚIâm not overthinking.â
âYou are,â Megan said gently this time, not teasing, just⌠stating it.
Sophia looked away, her jaw tightened slightly. ââŚItâs just weird.â There it was, finally.
âWeird how?â Yoonchae asked.
Sophia hesitated. ââŚLike Iâve seen her before.â
Neither of them spoke, letting it sit.
âHave you?â Megan asked.
Sophia shook her head. âI donât remember.â
Yoonchae leaned back, thinking. ââŚWhat if you just forgot?â
Sophia frowned. âForgot what?â
ââŚSomething from before.â Megan spoke this time.
Sophia let out a small breath. âThatâs vague.â
âYour childhood,â Yoonchae clarified.
Sophia huffed lightly. âI remember my childhood.â
âDo you?â Megan asked.
Sophia looked at her. âYes.â
Megan held her gaze for a second.
ââŚThen why does she feel familiar?â
Silence was heavier now. Sophia didnât answer, she couldn't. Because for the first time, it didnât feel like a simple question anymore.
ââŚAsk your mom,â Yoonchae said quietly.
Sophia blinked. ââŚWhat?â
âAsk your mom,â Megan repeated. âIf there was someone.â
Sophia shook her head. âThatâsââ
âJust ask,â Yoonchae said, not pushing, just suggesting.
Sophia looked down at her hands, thinking. ââŚFine,â she said eventually. âIâll ask.â
That evening, the apartment was quiet again. Too quiet, now that they were gone. Sophia stood in the kitchen, phone in hand, staring at the screen like it had personally offended her. âThis is stupid,â she muttered, but she dialed anyway.
âSophia?â her momâs voice came through, soft and warm. âHi, anak.â
There was a pauseâfamiliar, comfortable.
âYou okay?â her mom asked gently. âYou donât usually call at this hour.â
Sophia leaned against the counter, staring at the floor. ââŚYeah. I just wanted to ask something.â
She hesitated, then exhaled. Sophia leaned against the counter, eyes unfocused. ââŚDid we ever know someone⌠who moved away?â
Her mom didnât answer immediately. ââŚWhy?â she asked instead.
Sophia hesitated. âI met someone,â she said. âAnd I donât know why, but she feelsâŚâ
She sighed ââŚfamiliar.â
A soft breath on the other end, that slight shift in her momâs breathing. âYou remember her?â
Sophiaâs brows furrowed. ââŚIâm supposed to?â
A soft, almost disbelieving laugh came from the other end. âOh, SophiaâŚâ
Her grip on the phone tightened slightly. ââŚMa?â
âYou used to cry for her,â her mom said gently.
Sophia froze. ââŚWhat?â
âYou were little,â her mom continued. âSix, maybe seven. You two were always together. Every afternoon, Iâd find you outside your gate waiting for her.â
The image came slowly. Not clear, but there.
âYou didnât like playing with other kids much, you said they were really mean,â her mom added. âBut with her⌠you were different.â
Sophia stayed quiet, listening to her mother talk.
âYouâd share everything,â her mom went on. âSnacks, toys⌠even that old teddy bear you refused to let anyone touch.â
That made something flickerâa faint image of small hands and the sound of laughter.
âYou called each other almost every day,â her mom said. âEven if you were just across the street.â
Sophia pressed her lips together. ââŚWhat happened?â
âThey moved,â her mom answered softly. âHer family had to leave. It was sudden.â
âYou didnât understand it,â she continued. âYou kept asking when sheâd come back. For weeks.â
Sophiaâs chest tightened. ââŚI donât remember that.â
âI know,â her mom said gently. âYou were too young. But you never really forgot.â
Sophia looked down, fingers tightening slightly around her phone. ââŚWhat do you mean?â
Her mom smiled faintly on the other end. âYou used to call out for her in your sleep every night without a fail. I thought it'll stop after a few years but until now you still do,â she said.
Sophiaâs breath hitched, just a little. ââŚWhat?â
They spend the entire night talking about Sophia's childhood and that girl. Each minute that passesâeverything becomes clearer to Sophia, slowlyâshe remembers everything.
The past few days had been⌠strange, not in an obvious way. Everything looked normal on the outsideâclasses, site work, deadlines, but underneath it, something had shifted.
For Sophia and for you. But neither of you said anything.
âOkay, listen,â Migs said, clapping his hands together as your group stood outside the hotel. âTonightâs the big event.â
âThe Lantern Parade,â Chae said, already excited.
âYeah, yeah,â Migs nodded. âAnd good newsâI know someone from UP.â
Karina raised a brow. âYou know someone?â
âYes,â Migs said proudly. âConnections.â
âSince when?â you asked.
âSince⌠donât worry about it,â he waved it off. âPoint is, weâre not getting lost tonight.â
ââŚWe werenât going to get lost,â you muttered.
Migs looked at you. âYou got lost on day one.â
âThat was different.â
âMm,â Karina hummed. âSure.â
Chae grinned. âAt least this time someone will guide you.â
You rolled your eyes. âWhatever. Letâs just go.â
At the same timeâon the other side of campus.
âGuys, move, weâre going to be late!â Daniela called out, already halfway out the door.
âWeâre not even late,â Megan said, walking at a normal pace.
âWe will be,â Daniela insisted. âBecause weâre meeting someone.â
âWho?â Yoonchae asked.
Daniela grinned. âA friend.â
Manon raised a brow. âSince when do you have mysterious friends?â
âExcuse me, I have many friends.â
âThat we donât know about?â Megan added.
Sophia, walking behind them, frowned slightly. ââŚWho are we meeting?â
Daniela shrugged. âJust someone.â
âThatâs not suspicious at all,â Manon muttered.
ââŚYouâre being weird.â Sophia narrowed her eyes just a little.
âIâm always weird,â Daniela said proudly.
Yoonchae leaned toward Sophia. âSheâs hiding something.â
âIâm not hiding anything!â
Sophia didnât reply. But something about it...felt off. Still, she didnât push it. ââŚFine,â she said. âLetâs just go.â
Later that evening. The entrance of the University of the Philippines Diliman was packed. Lights were everywhere. Students walking in groups, laughter mixing with music from somewhere deeper inside the campus. Lanterns glowed in different colors, some already being carried, others displayed along the pathways. It felt alive.
âOkay,â Migs said, looking around. âWeâre meeting them here.â
ââThemâ?â Karina repeated.
âMy friend,â he corrected.
âSingular?â Chae asked.
You narrowed your eyes. âWhy does that sound like a lie?â
âItâs not a lie,â Migs said quickly.
âOkay, weâre meeting them here,â Daniela said, scanning the crowd.
ââThemâ?â Megan repeated.
âMy friend,â Daniela said.
âSingular?â Yoonchae asked.
Manon crossed her arms. âThat sounds fake.â
Sophia looked between them. ââŚWho exactly are we meeting?â
Daniela opened her mouthâthen paused. ââŚYouâll see.â
Sophia frowned, that didnât help.
Back at the entranceââWhere are they?â Karina asked, looking around.
Migs pulled out his phone. âRelax, theyâre here.â
âWho is âtheyâ?â you asked again.
Before he could answerâ
Migs turned immediately, his whole face lighting up. âDANIELA!â
So thatâs the âfriend.â
Across from you, a group approachedâloud, laughing, already drawing attention without even trying. And right in the middle of them?
Your steps slowed without you meaning to.
At the same time, Sophia looked up. Her eyes landed on you, he paused just for a second. ââŚOh.â Not surprised, not confusedâjust recognition. And maybe something softer underneath.
âHey,â she said, a small smile forming.
ââŚHey,â you replied, a little quieter.
Behind you, Chae immediately leaned into your side. âOh my god, itâs her again.â
âI know,â Karina whispered back.
âAct normal,â Migs muttered right before waving way too enthusiastically. âDaniela!â
âHi!â Daniela greeted, already stepping forward and slapping Migs lightly on the arm. âTook you long enough.â
âYouâre the one who said âon the wayâ for twenty minutes,â Migs shot back.
âThatâs still on the way!â While the two of them started bickering like it was second nature, Sophiaâs friends slowed down, because now they were looking at you.
ââŚWait,â Megan said, eyes narrowing slightly.
Yoonchae leaned closer. âIs that-â
âThe cafĂŠ girl,â Megan finished.
All four of them turned to Sophia. Slowly... Suspiciously.
ââŚYou didnât tell us you were meeting her,â Megan said.
Sophia blinked once. âI didnât know I was.â
âThatâs even worse,â Yoonchae muttered.
âWait... Who is cafe girl?â Lara asked, looking between the three of them.
âOhhh she didnât tell you?â Megan looked at her.
Megan and Yoonchae looked at each other with knowing smirks, leaving Lara confused.
Daniela, finally noticing the shift, looked between both groups.
âWaitâhold on,â she said, pointing between you and Sophia. âYou guys already know each other?â
You and Sophia glanced at each other. âYeah,â you both said at the same time.
Daniela froze and then gasped. âNO WAY.â
Migs frowned slightly. âWait, you didnât tell them?â
âYou didnât tell us,â Manon cut in, looking straight at Sophia now.
âI didnât think it was necessary,â Sophia replied, a bit more composed than everyone else.
âNecessary?â Lara repeated. âYouâve been acting weird for days!â
âYou have,â Megan said.
MeanwhileâChae nudged you. âDays?â she whispered.
Karinaâs eyes widened. âOh, she was thinking about you.â
âI was notââ Sophia started.
âYou definitely were,â Yoonchae said.
You felt your face heat up slightly. âOh my god,â you muttered under your breath.
âThis is insane,â Daniela said, looking way too excited about this. âMy two worlds are colliding.â
Migs pointed at her. âYOU couldâve warned me!â
âYou couldâve warned me!â she shot back.
âThatâs because I didnât know!â
Manon just shook her head, clearly entertained. âWhat are the odds?â
No one answered. Because standing thereâwith the same people, same place, same timing, it didnât feel random at all.
âWell,â Migs said after a moment, clapping his hands again. âSince weâre all hereâŚâ
Daniela grinned. âWe hang out together.â
âObviously,â Chae said.
You glanced at Sophia and she glanced at you. At the same moment with the same hesitation.
And just like that, the two groups merged into one.
The chaos didnât die down immediately. If anything, it followed all of you as the group slowly started moving deeper into the University of the Philippines Diliman.
âExplain,â Manon said, walking beside Sophia but looking past herâstraight at you.
Well, Yoonchae and Megan finally told her and Lara everything they know.
âThereâs nothing to explain,â Sophia replied.
âThere is everything to explain,â Lara added.
âYou met her twice,â Manon continued. âTwiceâand didnât say anything.â
âIt slipped my mind.â
âThat doesnât just slip your mind,â Lara said.
On the other sideâChae leaned toward you. âShe didnât tell them.â
âI can hear you,â Sophia said without looking.
Karina snorted. âOh, she definitely thought about you then.â
âYou did,â Yoonchae and Megan said at the same time.
âWow,â Daniela clapped once, walking between both groups. âThis is the best day of my life.â
âFocus,â Migs cut in, though he was grinning. âYouâre the reason this is happening.â
âAnd Iâd do it again,â Daniela shot back proudly.
âYou didnât even know!â Migs argued.
Manon walked quietly beside them, shaking her head. âYouâre both chaotic.â
âThank you,â both Daniela and Migs said.
Somewhere along the walk, the noise softened. Not completely, but enough. The group spread out naturally, conversations breaking into smaller ones. Laughter still echoed here and there, but it wasnât as overwhelming anymore. Lights lined the path, lanterns glowing in different colors, casting soft reflections on the pavement. The deeper you went into the campus, the more alive everything feltâmusic in the distance, students gathering, voices overlapping in the night air.
And without really noticing, you slowed down just a little. Falling a step behind the others. She did too. Not enough to be obvious, but enough. Now you were walking side by side. Not too close, not too farâjust right there.
For a moment, neither of you spoke. The noise from your friends filled the space instead.
âNO, because you couldâve told meââ
âI didnât know it was her!â
âThatâs even worse!â
You let out a quiet breath, glancing ahead before speaking. ââŚDidnât expect this.â
Sophia gave a small nod, her gaze forward. âMe neither.â
A pause settled between you, comfortable and familiar.
Then you glanced at her. âYou knew Daniela?â
She sighed lightly. âUnfortunately.â
ââŚSame with Migs.â You huffled a laugh that earned a small smile from her.
And there it was again. That feeling, still there. But different now, not as confusing, not as suddenâjust present. Like something slowly making senseâbut not fully. Not yet.
Up ahead, Daniela and Migs were still arguing. âYOU shouldâve told me!â
âYOU shouldâve told me!â
âThatâs literally what I just said!â
âExactly!â
Karina groaned. âTheyâre the same person.â âPlease donât tell them that,â Manon muttered. âToo late,â Chae said. âIâm telling them later.â âDonâtââ both of them said at once. Yoonchae laughed. âIâm recording it if you do.â
You shook your head slightly, a small smile forming despite yourself. Then glanced back at her. She was already looking at you, just for a secondâwith that look in her eyes that you couldn't explain before looking away.
Above you, the sky darkened fully. Lanterns began to glow brighter, colors reflecting softly against the trees and pavement. The crowd thickened the further you walked, voices blending into something louder, more alive. Something building. You could feel it. That the night wasnât done yet. Not even close. But for now, you kept walking, side by side, like it had always been that way.
By the time you reached the heart of the University of the Philippines Diliman, the crowd had grown thicker. Voices overlapped, laughter echoed from different directions. Lanternsâhuge, intricate, glowing in colors that shifted with every stepâwere being carried past you, some shaped like animals, others like buildings, stories, ideas brought to life.
âOkay, that oneâs insane,â Chae said, pointing at a massive lantern shaped like a moving jeepney. âImagine building that,â Karina added. âImagine grading that,â Migs muttered. Daniela laughed. âAutomatic pass.â âDeserve,â Yoonchae nodded.
The group slowed down, naturally blending into the crowd. Someone suggested taking photos. Someone else pointed at food stalls nearby. It became messy again, chaotic and familiar. But through all of it you felt⌠distracted. Not in a bad way, just somewhere else. You stood near one of the lantern displays, your drink half-forgotten in your hand.
You blinked. Sophia was beside you again, you hadnât even noticed when she got there.
ââŚYeah,â you said, though it came out softer than you expected. âJustâthereâs a lot.â
She nodded slightly, glancing around. âItâs like this every year,â she said. âBut it still feels⌠new.â
You hummed in agreement. Silence followed, not awkward. Just quiet.
âWait, donât move!â Karina called out.
âWhy?â
âIâm taking a picture!â
âOf what?!â
âOf youâjust stand there!â
âNOâdelete that!â
Laughter erupted. But it felt distant, muted. Like you were hearing it from far away. You glanced at Sophia, she was looking ahead, watching the lanterns pass by. The light reflected in her eyes, soft and flickering.
For a moment, your chest tightened. And thenâit happened. A memory, it was quick and blurry but there. Rain is falling hard against the concrete, small feet splashing through puddles. Laughterâhigh, bright, carefree. You blinked and the present snapped back.
ââŚWeird,â you muttered under your breath.
âWhat?â Sophia asked, turning slightly.
ââŚNothing.â You shook your head lightly. Just your imagination, right?
The group started moving again, this time toward a more open area. The crowd thinned just enough to breathe, lanterns now lining both sides like glowing sentinels. You walked with them, but slower, like your body was keeping up, while your mind stayed behind.
Another memory. This timeâclearer. Two small hands holding the same snack. A quiet argument.
âItâs mine!â
âNo, you said weâd share!â A pause. ââŚFine. Half.â A pinky raised. âPromise?â âPromise.â
You stopped walking, just for a second. Your fingers twitched slightly at your side.
ââŚY/N?â Chae called from ahead.
âIâm coming,â you said quickly, catching up.
Your heart was beating a little faster now. Beside you Sophia frowned slightly. ââŚAre you sure youâre okay?â
You let out a small breath. ââŚYeah. I just feel like I forgot something.â
She didnât respond immediately, just watched you for a second longer than usual. ââŚYeah,â she said quietly. ââŚSame.â
The night deepened, lights grew brighter, music got louder. The crowd slowly shifted toward the open field where everyone was starting to gather.
âFireworks later,â Migs said, looking around. âMidnight.â
âOf course,â Daniela grinned. âMain character moment.â âYou are not the main character,â Manon said. âI am tonight.â âNo.â âYes.â âPlease stop.â
You barely listened. Because nowâthe memories werenât just flashes. They were⌠forming.
A gate with the paint is slightly chipped. A small girl is standing outside. Waiting, looking toward the street.
ââŚYouâre late,â she said. "I'm not!" âYou are.â âI brought snacks.â A pause. ââŚOkay, youâre forgiven.â
You inhaled sharply. The air felt different, heavier.
Sophia was closer now. Not too close, but closer than before, her brows were slightly furrowed. Like she could see something was happeningâeven if she didnât understand it. âYou sure youâre okay?â she asked again.
You nodded quickly. Too quickly. ââŚYeah.â But your voice wasnât steady anymore.
The countdown started somewhere in the distance. âTen minutes!â someone shouted. The crowd shifted again, everyone slowly gathering in one direction. Excitement built, energy was rising. But for you, everything felt like it was slowing down.
Another memory, clearer and closer.
Two kids sitting side by side. One leaning slightly into the other.
ââŚDonât go. I know you move a lot, but please donât ever go away.â âIâm not going.â The girl lifted her head and looked at you. âEven if I did, Iâd remember you, and I will come back." Her eyes lit up. âYou promise?â ââŚI promise.â
Pinky fingers locking. Tighter this time, like it meant something more. You stopped walking again. This time, you didnât move.
ââŚY/N?â Karina called but her voice felt far away, like it was distant.
Because now, you were looking at her, at Sophia. And something about herâsomething in the way she stood, the way she looked at youâfelt like it was pulling something out of you. Something you didnât even know you still had.
âFive minutes!â the crowd shouted.
People cheered. Phones were raised. Lights dimmed slightly around the field. The sky above was dark now, waiting.
Your chest tightened with that same feeling from beforeâbut stronger and warmer. Almost overwhelming. You didnât look away from her, you couldnât. And for a secondâshe didnât look away either.
ââŚDo I know you?â You didnât mean to say it out loud. But it came out anyway, soft, barely even above a whisper. Sophia froze just slightly. Her lips parted, but no words came out.
The countdown began. The crowd roared.
Another memory, clear and sharp. The same girl smiling and waving.
But this timeâher face.
It wasnât blurry anymore.
The sky exploded into light. Fireworks burst overhead, colors scattering across the darkness.
Everything lit up at once. The crowd cheered, it was loud and overwhelming. But you didnât hear any of it. Because you were staring at her and now, you could finally see her. Not just now, but then, before.
From your dreams. From your memories. From that day.
ââŚItâs you,â you whispered. Your voice shook slightly.
Sophia didnât move, she didnât speak, but her eyes softened, like she had been waiting.
The girl in your dreams. The one who waved at you. The one you couldnât rememberâuntil now.
She was right in front of you, and she always had been. For a moment, Sophia didnât speak. She just looked at you, not confused and not surprised. Just⌠soft. Like she had been waiting for this exact moment.
Thenâa small smile, familiar and warm. Like something you have been waiting for. The kind that made your chest tighten for reasons you finally understood.
âTook you long enough,â she said quietly. Your breath caught. That tone. That voiceâit felt like something pulled straight out of a memory you didnât know you still had.
Another firework exploded above you, light spilling across her face, illuminating her eyes as she stepped just a little closer, not enough to close the distance completely, but enough.
âDo you still remember?â she asked softly. "Your promise."
You didnât answer right away. Because you did. Not everything, not all at once. But enough, enough to knowâyou were never just imagining her. Your fingers twitched slightly at your side. Then slowlyâyou lifted your hand, hesitant. Like you werenât sure if it would still fit.
Sophia looked down at it, then back at you and without a wordâshe hooked her pinky around yours. Just like before. Like no time had passed at all.
Your breath hitched. A quiet laugh almost escaped you. ââŚYou remember that?â you murmured.
She tilted her head slightly. âI never forgot.â
Thatâthat did something to you. Something warm, something that settled deep in your chest.
Above you, the fireworks continued to bloom across the sky, louder now, brighter, filling every space with lightâbut somehow, it all felt quieter. Like the world had softened around the two of you.
You looked at her, like really looked at her. Not as a stranger. Not as someone new. But as someone you had been searching forâwithout even knowing. And somehowâshe had been searching too. Neither of you said anything after that. You didnât need to.
Because for the first timeâeverything made sense. And under the fading lights of the sky, with your pinkies still loosely intertwinedâyou stayed. Right there, like you were never meant to be anywhere else.
