there are not many photos of me as a child. this is one of the few, and the photo itself is thirty years old today. my father, whom i don't speak to anymore, took it. my mom told me it was taken in their old rental they knew they would leave soon. and because my father was travelling often and my mom, who didn't only care for me but my brother, who was only a year old at the time, followed him wherever he went. i think about this photo often: the accidental dark cut on the left side, like a foreshadowing, and how for the longest of time, everyone told me i resemble my dad, and as i am growing older i cannot help but recognise him in myself. bit by bit. the bits and pieces. the shadowy parts.
