I'm a ghost

the only time the cops got involved was one night when she texted a friend something vague about wishing she could sleep forever (she was dealing with chronic illness and just venting) and they called 911 and sent cops to our apartment. They also told my roommate what they'd done (thankfully) and without my knowledge she deleted all her social media, packed a bag, took all the cash she had and fled at 9pm now with more motivation to hurt herself. So the cops showed up at the apartment, searched the place, and started a city-wide manhunt for my roommate, and because I was the only one she would talk to, they put me in the back of their cop car and I was rattled all over the city trying to negotiate with her by phone. It turned into a highly traumatic all-night ordeal for both of us that could have been infinitely worse if we weren't white and housed. When all my roommate needed in that initial moment was someone to say "that sounds really hard, I'd love to hear more about it"

Important addition thank you! You can absolutely have boundaries about substance use but your friends who use substances know themselves and their needs better than you, and they do not need policing or threats of incarceration. If you want to help your friends who deal with addiction, be patient and demonstrate that you're a safe person to talk to.

Same haircuts, same jackets, same tops and pants. I could NEVER tell anybody apart. I was there in my leather jacket and workboots and crew cut so they all got a huge advantage in recognising me, but I was shit out of luck. I had to try to see what child they were with and guess.
