Denied unemployment checks. This day can't get worse.
Never underestimate a brown dad's ability to ruin his eldest daughter's whole day at 11am
Scheduled send on my academic book proposal. The girl who dreamed of being a published author some day, and who cried her way through most of grad school thinking she wasn't good enough to complete the Ph.D....is hopefully proud now. I did it.
Editor got back to me and said I can expect to hear back in 6 weeks, which means I will certainly know if I have a book deal by my 30th birthday in September.

Jane Hirshfield, from a poem titled "Works and Loves," featured in The Asking: New and Selected Poems
actually I hate the term "mutual aid" it reeks of white exceptionalism. what you think is "cool counterculture never been done before sooo leftist" is considered normal adult mature people behavior in most cultures. like you are pretending you invented something soooo new and different but not crediting the people for whom this is normal and expected behavior, and then backwardly superimposing your Eurocentric term onto cultures which do not think this is anything special and often don't have a term for it or it is just called "generosity". like is it soso radical for me to hand my shirt to someone who asked for it? no because that is expected behavior in Senegal. You are supposed to literally give someone the shirt off of your back if they ask for it. "mutual aid" is not a thing when everyone is expected to share. people do not seek praise and recognition over it, they just share their food with everyone all the time. like my friend who is Haitian bought a full size pizza for everyone and carried it around today asking everyone in different rooms if they wanted some. that is normal people behavior. and its not just the african diaspora. in China the standard way of asking after someone politely is "have you eaten?". If the person being asked says no, the asker must feed them no matter what even if they are a total stranger. the famous Lakota chief and medicine man Tatanka Iyotake (Buffalo-Bull-Sitting-Down, more commonly known by whites as "Sitting Bull") was appalled at the existence of street urchins during his travels across the eastern seaboard and used to hand all of his earnings penny by penny to the nearest starving child, while apparently muttering to himself in Lakota "white men think they are so great, but really they cannot even feed their children and behave like them" or something to that effect (this anecdote is from Lakota oral history). Cultures as disparate as Apache and Japanese have noted their confusion and disgust at the selfishness, irrationality, lack of emotional restraint, and unwillingness to share of the Europeans they encountered. So like..... idk be a normal person and get out of your bubble?

Okay, I have to talk about this. This is why I love Vax and why, even though Percy may be my favorite, Vax is probably the best of Vox Machina and the standout of the group. Because while the others do noble things in isolation for important reasons, Vax is noble to his core. Even when faced with certain death, he doesn’t compromise what he knows to be the right choice.
We can see the moment the Whispered One asks him, “What say you, Champion?” Vax knows what making this choice will cost. He loves Keyleth with everything he has, we’ve seen the future he wanted with her, the life he’s going to miss out on, the love for his sister and friends, the fear he’s had of dying but despite all that he chooses to spit in the Whispered One’s face anyway. To not submit to him. Even before that he was willing to die when he flew the Whispered One away from everyone to take the brunt on himself. That is true bravery.
While I understand Keyleth’s choice, hers is ultimately made out of selfishness, the desire not to suffer loss and pain and the grief of saying goodbye. Vax makes the selfless choice. He always has. The one that puts others before himself despite what it will cost. He did the same in saving Percy and submitting to the Matron of Ravens. Turning what everyone thought was a curse into a chance for redemption and the saving of others. And that’s what makes him a hero. The ability to stand alone and take on the burden of the difficult choice. That’s exceedingly heroic. Just adore Vax’ildan’s character.
