Dolphins in Belize depend on the survival of mangroves. If it’s hard to fathom how, watch this! The pair approached the tip of St. George’s caye one July morning in 2016. The mother #bottlenosedolphin targets her rostrum towards the mangroves and uses her powerful flukes to generate a loud underwater noise, maybe to startle her breakfast into motion. She focuses her echolocation beam forward beneath the edge of the mangrove forest, presumably in search of prey once so cleverly hidden. And then she’s gone! Her calf waits patiently outside, twisting left and right with what looks like youthful impatience as mom disappears from our birdseye view beneath an impossible tangle of roots and foliage. She spends several minutes racing along the coast before emerging with a burst of speed, reuniting with her calf and heading off towards the seagrass flats on the way to Belize City. #dolphin #animals #nature #naturelover #mangroves #conservation #wildlifeconservation #drone #dji #dronestagram #dronevideo #marinemammals #tursiops #belize #stgeorgescaye #caribbean #science #fieldwork #aerialphotography (at St. George's Caye) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1goOioFZBN/?igshid=1gc5a0bo02xuk
