For me May is month of two halves: on the one hand it’s about saying goodbye to winter rugs and on the other about preparation for the onslaught of summer flies, healthy hooves and bathing my horse. With that in mind, here are the jobs I'm doing this month...

Now that the slightly warmer and drier days are here, many owners consider turning their horses out at night as opposed to during the day.  Many believe that it cuts down on the cost and effort of keeping a horse, e.g. stabling, mucking out, bedding and so on. One of the biggest mistakes about gear for keeping your extremities warm, is that it’s not regarded as an important, let alone critical, piece of kit like a pair of breeches is.

This is because after the cost and effort of a riding hat, riding boots, breeches etc, we riders often run out of steam and cash!
