One of my favourite Leverage tropes is when some goons are threatening a member of the team and Eliot just comes out of nowhere from off screen or around a corner, sometimes even when he wasn't anywhere nearby in the previous scene, as if he was summoned like a pokemon coming out of a pokeball. Eliot I choose you.
average nate-centric leverage episode: grief & drinking & catholic guilt & maybe sterling is there also
average parker-centric episode: another incredibly traumatic piece of her backstory is revealed
average sophie-centric episode: oops she lied/manipulated/kept secrets too much & backed herself into a corner
average hardison-centric episode: hardison gets into a Situation TM
average eliot-centric episode: what if we made eliot a minor celebrity. again.
I rly like it when the team is like HARDISON. We need you to forge an old piece of art/document/etc.
And Hardison is like you are MISUSING my TALENTS. You are DISREGARDING the fact that I am an INTERNET MAN and my skills lay in HACKING. You DARE to ask ME to do something as MUNDANE as perfectly construct an 18th century diary, complete with all of the writing inside of it, in TWO DAYS. That is BENEATH ME and also I dont think I can DO IT and you people are RIDICULOUS and why am I even WORKING with people who dont APRECIATE me and ABUSE me so. This house is a FUCKING NIGHTMARE.
And then the team is like so u'll have it done by wednesday and Hardison goes yea lol of course it sounds fun
sometimes i think about how eliot spencer in any other font would be such an annoying character. like he's the gruff, ex-military, man pain guy who gets all the girls. and then they said no! he's a thoughtful and kind man who children love and who has an absolutely mind-obliterating insane amount of ptsd. and he's got long hair, jewelry, and probably some sort of pronouns situation. and he's almost certainly in a sort of queerplatonic throuple with an adhd genius and the most autistic woman(?) alive. what a character

Leverage: Redemption S03E10 The Side Job.
Bonus meme:
I was looking at Leverage fic on AO3, read the tag "hand job" and thought "I don't remember that episode" in all seriousness before it hit me
I think Leverage has a really neat take on the concept of revenge.
Because a lot of times, revenge gets framed as this inherently immoral act, like it doesn't matter how evil the person you want revenge on is, it doesn't matter that stopping them is a net positive for the world, revenge is just bad and wanting it makes you bad.
But I think that a lot of the problems with most revenge narratives come from the fact that the person/people seeking revenge put too much importance on getting revenge, but there's not enough catharsis in the actual act of taking revenge. They end up left with a whole lot of left-over righteous anger, and no acceptable targets left to vent it on. That way lies the bloodline ending feuds of greek tragedy and the like.
But Leverage says "No, actually you're right, that guy is absolutely terrible, he does need to be stopped and his victims should be awarded the catharsis of revenge." But then, instead of taking the easy way out of having Hardison siphon all the money out of their accounts, or sending Elliot over to their house with a baseball bat, they complicate the revenge plot. Instead of walking the easier path of the quick and unsatisfying revenge, they insist on poetic justice and dramatic irony and the complete and utter, very public destruction of the worst people in the world.
That's why I think Leverage feels different to, say, The Count of Monte Cristo, or other revenge-centric stories. They go the extra mile to tailor their revenge to the target, and give them Exactly what they deserve.
the plot of leverage:
since yall (me) love the man so much

i finished my leverage og run š³
in it's honour please witness the best fmv ever made for leverage and for the ot3 and for maybe any ot3 ever which i just learned can also be found on ao3
Had a friend express worry that Eliot Spencer gets injured so often in leverage and I had to reassure them: no no. U dont get it his old job was "getting the shit beat out of you constantly for the sake of people who dont care if u live or die," and then afterward he had to drag himself home, patch himself up, and do it all over again tomorrow. NOW he gets minor cuts and bruises (usually), and the moment the job is done his whole clingy crime family gets to go "oh that looks like it hurts let's get you some bacitracin and bruise cream!! Do you wanna cook dinner to feel better?" And then they all make sure he is never in any true mortal danger and he always gets a say in what he does for the job. This is like a working dog who got house privileges and now enjoys fat naps in front of the fire and fancy wet food after his long day guarding the flock. Hes doing great actually.
Leverage (2008) // eliot fighting for his life in the background
I love how Leverage went
Here's the cat burglar. She wears comfy clothes and has zero social skills. She has sex appeal but only if you're into a very specific type of woman, and crucially she has zero idea she has it. She probably doesn't know what an innuendo is.
Here's the hacker. He's a Black nerd, and also the most moral character of the bunch. He's a nerd but also not socially awkward; in fact, he's the second best at grifting, right after the person who's been doing it for decades.
Here's the muscle. In his heart of hearts, he is a chef. He is tough and manly but he uses that to look out for the working class and children and everyone else the system leaves behind. He's feared by politicians and he reminds his friend to tip the delivery person.
Here's the femme fatale. She's over forty years old, and she's the one seducing the mark. She's the heart of the team. Her calling is to be a director. She loves attending her own funeral.
Here's the mastermind. He's the only one who doesn't start out as a career criminal. He manipulates his own crew, kills two people after promising them he won't, and takes deals behind their back. He was in seminary school.
Also, here's their nemesis. He's Mark Sheppard.
"[character] has never done anything wrong in their life ā¤ļø" as in a hyperbolic joke expressing that the character is sweet and kind and i love them, vs "[character] has never done anything wrong in their life ā¤ļø" as in iām absolutely lying through my teeth while a long list of their crimes plays behind me like film credits

What makes Leverage a great show is that Nate has your standard Catholic guilt, Sophie is a chronic liar who struggles with genuine vulnerability, Parker and Eliot invent eighteen new types of repression with every episode, and Hardison is just trying to make a group hug happen.
Listen, I take thinly sliced turkey, all right? I pan-sear it with some sweet Maui onions, all right? Then I put a slice of dill Havarti cheese and another slice of an Heirloom tomato. All that goes on an everything bagel and I make my own garlic-and-green-onion cream-cheese spread. That's forgettable? I don't think so.
