     "oh  my  goodness,  congratulations!"  on  instinct  alone,  or  perhaps  an  assumed  social  necessity,  ferah  leaned  in  and  hugged  them  following  the  news  they'd  just  shared  with  her.  "when  did  you  find  out  or  get  the  confirmation?"  the  question  came  as  she  was  pulling  back  from  the  embrace.  it  seemed  fresh  given  the  excitement  and  the  fact  that  she'd  been  in  the  right  place  at  the  right  time  to  be  the  first  person  to  be  told,  to  find  out.  "this  is  what  you  wanted,  right?"

the  culmination  of  hard  work  deserved  to  be  celebrated,  and  jiwon  had  always  been  a  firm  believer  in  marking  those  milestones — both  personal  and  professional. “it  was  a  dreaded  google  meets  call  first  thing  in  the  morning,  actually,”  she  sighed,  returning  the  hug  without  hesitation. “for  a  moment,  i  thought  it  was  going  to  be  bad  news  like  a  termination,  but  hey,  a  promotion?  in  this  economy?”  she  gave  a  small  shrug,  accompanied  by  a  relaxed  grin  as  the  weight  of  uncertainty  lifted  from  her  shoulders. “a  just  reward  for  the  stress,”  she  added—and  the  late  nights,  the  meetings  that  could’ve  been  emails,  and  the  circus  that  was  occasionally  management. alas. “this calls for a drink or something bougie,  don't you  think?”

never  in  rosalia’s  twenty  seven  years  had  fashion  failed  her.  until  today.  stuck  in  a  dress  in  an  upscale  boutique  with  flushed  cheeks,  a  light  sheen  peeking  through  her  makeup,  and  a  zipper  that  wouldn’t  budge.  “  no  ,  no  ,  no.  ”  a  soft  spoken,  slightly  panicked  mantra  that  was  repeated  with  every  failed  attempt  to  reach,  and  release  the  metal  teeth  from  the  fabric.  a  deep  breath  was  inhaled  through  her  nose  and  released  past  her  lips,  calming herself and disturbing  the  errant  dark  strands  that  were  ticking  her  face  before  her  head  poked  out  from  behind  the  curtain.  “  i’m  sorry  ,  ”  a  gentle  plea.  “  my  zipper  is  stuck  ,  do  you  mind  .  .  .  ?  ”

lingering  near  the  edge  of  the  room,  logan's hands  wrapped  around  her  glass,  more  for  something  to  do  than  anything  else. her gaze drifted over shallow conversations and perfectly - timed laughter. everyone moved so easily, like they’d rehearsed this kind of night over and over, and she couldn’t help wondering if they actually felt that comfortable or if they were just better at pretending than she was. when  someone  stepped  beside  her,  she  straightened  slightly,  polite  instinct  kicking  in  before  anything  else.
