honeyed  gaze  rose  from  the  screen,  arched  brow  raising  as  she  cast  a  gaze  over  jia.  hadn't  wanted  to  say  it  before,  but  now ...  “  you  look  like  shit.  ”  another  look  up  and  down  before  she  returns  to  the  phone,  adding  in  a  squeeze  in  for  facials.  “  might  need  a  banana  drip  for  yourself.  ”  chi  didn't  have  enough  time  for  it,  she  had  a  new  vendor  to  meet,  but  jia  looked  as  though  she  needed  it  the  most.

“  okay,  first  of  all,  ouch.    but,  also,  thank  you.    you  have  no  idea  how  validating  that  is  when  the  rest  of  my  family  thinks  i’m  overreacting.    i  honestly  don’t  how  you’ve  recovered  this much already.    i’m  pretty  sure  we  had  the  same  number  of  tequila  shots—  or  did  we?!  ”    

“  ack,  watch  where  you  swing  those.  it's  a  deadly  weapon  in  your  hands,  ”  the  annoyance  in  his  tone  at  being  smacked  in  the  face  sounding  much  more  intimidating  than  his  facial  expressions  conveyed.  younger  sister  one  of  the  only  people  in  the  world  that  could  get  away  with  such  an  action.  eyes  scanned  over  delightful  treats,  decisions  sitting  on  the  edge  of  his  vision  as  he  contemplated  which  he  wanted.  “  the  one  with  the  berries  on  top  looks  like  the  best.  grab  one  of  those?  ”  his  hands  already  moving  to  grab  his  wallet  out  and  hand  it  to  her  while  gently  taking  the  aforementioned  bouquet  of  flowers  from  her  hands.  “  first  flowers  and  now  cakes?  are  we  having  a  party?  ”

she  grabs  his  wallet  with  both  hands  without  hesitation.    “  thank  yew !  ”  she  says  in  an  achingly  sweet  voice  and  hands  one  of  his  cards  to  the  person  behind  the  register.    “  yes, one of those, too, mhm. what?    oh  no,  no.    that’s  fine.    my  brother  will  carry  all  of  it.  ”    jia  doesn’t  return  her  attention  to  her  brother  until  the  transaction  goes  through.    “  huh?    oh,  the  flowers  are  for  my  apartment.    the  cakes  are  for  me  and  hana.    it’s  saturday.  ”    it’s  been their  ritual  to  taste  test  cakes  from  shops  all  over  new  york city  and  write  down  everything  they  liked  about  it  so  they  can  come  up  with  new  ideas  for  minho. just small bites of each, though, or else she'll get in trouble with her older cousin. “  i  mean,  i  gueeess  you  can  participate,  if  you  want  to.  ”    he  is  paying  for  all  of  it,  after  all.

“  it  makes  all  the  difference,  believe  it  or  not.  i  could  never  understand  it  —  what  happened  between  us.  ”  the  words  came  with  no  malice,  it  came  as  quiet  resignation.  the  years  of  toying  with  those  last  few  weeks  showing  now.  vulnerability  coming  out  in  a  moment  in  front  of  the  only  person  who  ever  understood  his  mind  that  intimately.  “  i  wanted  you,  ”  more  simplicity  in  a  relationship  that  was  anything  but.  “  yeah,  i  have  career  goals  and  aspirations  but  it  was  never  about  money  or  power  for  me.  i  don’t  think  it  always  was  for  you  either.  but  pippa,  why  do  you  think  i  stayed  in  new  york?  i  could  have  left  and  gone  to  los  angeles  and  been  fine  career  wise.  probably  better  off,  truthfully.  i  didn’t  stay  because  of  what  your  family  could  offer  me.  in  fact,  i’m  an  idiot  for  staying  in  a  company  where  i  have  no  future.  i  could  have  been  ceo  or  a  house  husband  for  all  i  cared  —  as  long  as  i  was  yours.  ”  a  pause  —  eyes  moved  from  wall  that  had  captured  his  attention  to  her.  “  what  do  you  want,  pippa?  not  your  family,  not  your  family  obligations,  not  whatever  you  think  i  want  –  what  do  you  want?  ”

“  you  could  never  understand  —  you?    it’s  you  who  walked  away  from  me.    not  once  in  the  ten  years  we  were  together  did  i  ever  think  leaving  you  was  an  option  but  it  was  i  who  had  to  prove  to  you  that  i  loved  you.    i  didn’t  think  that  was  fair.  ”    she  lets  out  a  sharp  breath.    “  but  i  understand  now.    if  you  didn’t  want  any  of  it  at  all,  i  understand  why  the  price  might’ve  been  too  high  for  you  to  pay.    had  i  known,  i  wouldn’t  have  made  you  pay  it.    i’m  not  a  bad  person.    i  want  you  to  have  your  goals  and  aspirations  and  all  the  other  things  that  make  you  happy.    i  don’t  want  you  to  sacrifice  that  for  me.    i’m  not  a  bad  person.  ”    she  feels  his  gaze  on  her  but  an  inexplicable  weight  makes  it  difficult  to  lift  her  eyes  to  meet  his.    “  of  course  i  loved  you.    but  i’m  afraid  that  was  the  best  i  can  do  and  it  wasn’t  enough.    so  how  does  it  make  a  difference?    you  make  it  sound  like  there  must  be  another  person  hiding  within  me  that  makes  more  sense  to  you,  that,  i  don’t  know,  that  you  can  never  imagine  walking  away  from.    i,  ”    she  laughs  humourlessly.    “  i’m  sorry  to  disappoint  you.    there’s  only  me.    and  i  want  it  all.    the  future  i  tried  to  share  with  you,  i  want  it.    i  want  to  be  valuable  to  my  family,  i  want  to  fulfill  their  expectations.    my  entire  life  has  been  a  sacrifice  and  i  want  it  to  be  worth  it.    this  house,  it’s  been  in  my  family  for  generations.    my  grand  aunt  promised  it  to  me  when  i  was  twelve.    earning  it,  deserving  it,  belonging  in  it,  i’m  afraid  that  is  what  makes  me  feel  like  a  real  person.    i  don’t  know  what  other  wants  you  imagine  i  may  have  —  a  different  life  has  never  once  crossed  my  mind.  ”    a  sense  of  relief  washes  over  her  and  finally she  raises her head  to  look  at  him.    “  you  asked  me  if  i  regret  it.    i  don’t.   i  missed  you.    i’m  happy  we  got  to  spend  that  time  together.    i  loved  you  for  free.    i  loved  you  without  expectation.    i’m  sorry  that  can’t  be  possible  with  us  together.    but  i  hope  you  felt  it  in  germany,  i wanted  you  to.  ”

“  family  stuff,  ”  she  repeats,  trying  the  weight  of  it  in  her  own  mouth  and  contemplating  its  worth.    his  excuse sounds unharmonious  to  pippa’s  ears.    she  can’t  think  of  a  good  reason  for  his  family  to  take  him  out  of  recovery  early.    surely,  the  koenigs  know  better  than  that?    she  fights  to  keep  her  expression  neutral,  the  only  clue  to  her  confusion  lying  in  the  soft  crease  that  forms  between  her  eyes.    she  knows  better  than  to  ask  for  an  elaboration  here,  now—but  do  they  have  enough  time  to  find  a  place  where  they  can  be  alone  and  say what they need to say?    “  and  are  you  staying?  ”    it  isn’t  the  right  question  to  ask.    julian  always  leaves.    it’s  a  matter  of  how  much  time  she  has  before  he  does. “  do  you  know  what  a  renaissance  faire  is?    it  was  something  like  it,  held  in  a  palace  in  germany,  and  sponsored  by  build-a-bear,  ”  she  recounts,  pretending  like  that  is  what  he’s  waiting  to  hear  about.    “  i  wish  you  were  there.  then i  could’ve  had  someone  put  in  a  pillory  for  my  donation,  ” she says, a lie tacked onto the truth to mask its density.    pippa  turns  to  face  him  again,  searching  his  face  for  an  answer  before  she  even  asks  her  question.    “  do you think i can  borrow  you  for  a  second?  " consciously, her eyes move around them, searching for a face she can justify the insecurity in her voice with.  " i was thinking we can take  a  walk before  i  head  home. i won't keep you for too long.  ”

was  that  what  he  wanted  to  ask?  were  they  still  talking  about  the  same  things?  it  seemed  as  though  he  was  going  to  have  to  speak  what  was  stuck  between  them  aloud  or  they  would  never  truly  speak  about  it.  “  no,  ”  word  sharp  in  the  room,  released  between  them.  “  do  you  regret  it?  ”  question  number  one.  “  did  you  love  me?  ”  the  forbidden  question.  did  you  love  me for me?  or  was  i  just  the  five  year  plan?

the  corners  of  her  mouth  pull  into  a  wry  smile.    “  what difference will it make if  i say  yes?    if  you  have  to  ask,  then  it  wasn’t  in  the  way  that  you  wanted  me  to.  your doubt will never be satisfied. ”    she  lowers  her  eyes  and  stares  at  her  hands.    she’s  surprised  at  how  still  they  remained.    “  you  don’t  want  it,  do  you?    the  position,  the  power,  everything  we  planned  to  become.    you  don’t  actually  care  for  it.  ”

awkward  spaces  filled  with  pippa  valmont  not  an  unfamiliar  scene  but  one  that  felt  a  little  more  charged  since  they  had  gotten  back  from  germany.  it  was  as  if  mutual  stance  to  avoid  it  for  as  long  as  possible  to  digest  what  exactly  happened  –  and  how  often  it  had  happened.  “  i  did  hear  she  was  having  a  great  time.  it's  good,  you  all  deserve  to  take  a  break  when  the  chance  arises.  ”  the  youngest  valmont  a  safe  conversation,  someone  who  hadn't  declared  arlo  public  enemy  number  one  after  the  break  up.  “  of  course  i  came,  we  do  need  to  talk  about  it.  as  you  said,  we're  adults,  ”  and  there  was  no  reason  for  shame,  that  had  been  what  arlo  had  concluded  in  the  space  between.  there  wasn't  regret  or  embarrassment.  only  confusion  remained.  “  i  think  the  first  question  is  how  do  you  feel  about  what  happened?  ”  after  all  –  regardless  of  reasons  why,  she  was  the  one  who  had  been  broken  up  with  in  the  first  place.  her  comfort  levels  meant  more  to  him  than  his  own  thoughts.

“  is  that  really  what  you  want  to  ask  me?  ”

sitting  at  the  back  of  the  room,  needing  the  space  to  watch  without  someone  breathing  down  his  neck  or  staining  his  suit  —  quintet  music  wasn't  his  usual  vibe,  but  he  made  the  exception  on  the  odd  occasion.  seeking  comfort  in  the  bottom  of  his  glass,  gaze  didn't  move  to  greet  her.  "  change  of  scenery,  i  guess.  "  he  responds,  wanting  something  that  wasn't  the  same  plain  walls  of  his  office  or  the  city's  skyline  through  floor  to  ceiling  windows  back  home.  "  the  duck,  of  course.  "  he  gives  into  the  jest,  a  little  relieved  that  not  everyone  here  was  seeking  him  out  for  a  business  deal.  

she  laughs  at  that,  being  more  or  less  in  the  same  boat.    even  this  dinner  isn’t  much  of  a  deviation  from  her  routine.    “  and  how  are  you  liking  it?    we  do  have  a  better  view  of  central  park.  ”    pippa  joins  him  on  the  sofa,  avoiding  locking  eyes  with  anyone  eager  to  start  a  conversation.    “  good.    we  had  to  fly  the  chef  all the way from  paris  just  for  tonight.    if  you  have  any  special  requests,  tell  me  now.    he’s  leaving  right  after.  ”

“  you’ll  regret  telling  me  that  because  now  we  have  to  do  it  again,  ”  she  says  in  earnest.    “  what  a  missed  opportunity  !    we  could  have  visited  the  nürburgring  and  driven  on  one  of  the  tracks.    it  wouldn’t  have been  as  picturesque  as  drifting  in  the  snow  but  it would've been  a different kind of  incredible.    oh  !    come with me to monticello.    some  of  my  friends  will  be  bringing  their  vintage  and  project  cars  to  a  private  track  day.    how  confident  are  you  in  your  driving  ?  ”

“  i promise. but let her sleep.  ”    pippa  moves  slowly  and  quietly,  finding  space  on  the  other  side  of  londen,  with a  book  she intends to make some progress with held  between  her  fingers.    settled on the blanket, pippa  glances  at  the  three  of  them,  a  happy  little  family,  and  quickly looks away,  out  into  the  green  expanse  sprawling  before  them,  before envy, and grief, can plant itself in her chest. chatter  lifts like  a  haze  from  the  other  people  in  the  park, dominated by the rustling of the leaves above them.    “  i forgot days like this existed,  ” she says softly, careful not to wake the sleeping miri.

being on the nightly news was definitely an adjustment for christine. for one thing, there wasn't too much creative liberty — okay, there wasn't really supposed to be any creative liberty. and sure, when she was on broadway, she didn't improvise but she could have certain inflections and nuances to her performance. she didn't feel the same way reading the news even if she tried to keep it interesting as much as she could. maybe during her dinner today, she could grease the wheels to try to get a little more room to play, instead of just plainly reporting the news. she was waiting for pippa, who had been very encouraging of her career pivot, at their table. when she saw the other woman, she waved her over. " over here, doll ! " she stood up to greet her with a hug.

she  dismisses  the  host  with  a  thank  you  and  walks  the  last  few  steps  towards  christine  unchaperoned.    “  i  hope  i  didn’t  you  make  you  wait  too  long.  ”    she  settles in her seat and  takes a  quick  glance  around  the  room.    “  i  haven’t  been  here  in  a  while,  ”  she  says,  attention  returning  to  her date for tonight. the ninth face she's seen for dinner this week, all intending to talk to her about their interests over a perfectly plated dish.    she's happy to listen, if it served her own. and pippa has hopes christine will be a far more interesting dinner companion than the rest. “  i  loved  their  lemon  cheesecakes.    i  wonder  if  it's changed. should  we  have  it  for  dessert?  ”

pinching the bridge of nose, sebastian repeated his instructions, syllables carrying a harsher bite the second time spoken, and ended the call seconds after the employee communicated he understood. a glance at the clock told him he wasn't as delayed as he'd thought. irritation was buried when he stepped out of his office, greeting his sister with a smile. call might've delayed planned lunch but it wouldn't ruin it.  ❝ now that the fire is dealt with, what restaurant am i paying for lunch at ? ❞   assumed he'd be the one covering the bill. what were big brothers for, after all?

a  single  red  line  ghosts  over  her  vision.    she  sees  it  over  sebastian’s  face,  over  the  smile  he  gives  her,  innocent  of  the  fire  she  had  to  deal  with.    she  places  a  hand  on  his  shoulder  for  support  and  a  quick  peck  on  his  cheek  in  greeting.    “  nothing  fancy,  i  hope  you  don’t  mind.    i reserved us a table at le pavillon.  did  you get  a  thank  you  text from nana for the mother's day gifts?  ”  she  starts  towards  the  elevators,  walking alongside seb.  “  we  should  all  still  be  expecting  cards. mom says nana’s  not  giving  that  up  yet.  ”

laurie looks up at the footsteps beside their table, flipping its notebook closed and pulling it out of the way to make space for their guest. the other goes to speak, and laurie holds up a hand. “ give me a sec, ” they say, downing the last of their coffee before setting the cup down. “ okay, i'm all ears. what's got you looking like someone hid vegemite in your chocolate ? ”

she  plops  down  the  seat  opposite  with  a  pathetic  thump.    “  someone  outbid me  on  the dior dress i wanted  !  ”    she  groans  and  lays  her  forehead  against  the  table,  an image of utter  defeat.    “  i already bought the shoes and the bag to go with it  !    and now it's gone. i bet it went to a reseller who'll mark up the price by another couple thousand.  ” she sits up slowly, revealing a faint red spot on the center of her forehead. " and i actually don't mind vegemite. "
